I bought a "parts" motor off a friend to build a 4.6 out of... At 190k miles it still have cross-hatch in the cylinders and only a slight ridge out the top of the bores. Valves, seats, and guides were all fine too.
Happy freaking hump day! Went off the grid for a couple more days! Stay tuned tomorrow for a double feature! Really interesting series of events! ;) As always, thanks for the incredible support! Wouldn't be here without you guys!
iamjake if you built a wooden subfloor deck in Jade there would be more storage, more organization and less weight up top and lol the awkward struggle of pulling the toolbox out would be no more. just a suggestion, I'm sure you have thought about it before
Hey Jake I was wondering if you were planning on getting an offroad trailer in the future, you can get a lot of stuff off of jade especially the totes on the roof rack and add solar panels
I have that same tool roll and it carries about 90% of my hand tools required to work on my Rubicon. Great space saver and easy to move to the part you're working on. Keep up the great videos!
1:22 my aunt and uncle had 400-500k on theirs when they turned it in for the California car crusher program, or sounded like an ammo case full of marbles but kept going.
Nice you can do oil changes on the road. We don't know where to take our old oil in Central America so we've been going into shops to get it changed, but we've had some ridiculous experiences. Including a guy in Guatemala who owned a garage, but no oil filter wrench. The process took 2 hours and involved me and another guy getting under the truck to help out. All part of the adventure I guess :)
Annie shouldn't be getting in the water at the beginning of this video as it is farm field runoff with high concentrations of herbicide and fertilizers
Your supposed to let those air filters dry out overnight after you clean and oil them. The oil can get too the maf sensor and make ur engine run bad. Great video tho have a great day!
just my two cent, i have 99 suburban 5.7. its got 370kish on it. i switched to synthetic a couple years ago. about 6 months ago i took it in for an oil change. found out that the cooling system sprung a leak and had almost zero water. i live in south georgia. the leak had to had started like three days before just i checked everything and it was good to go. in those three days i put about 400 miles on the truck. no high temps or anything. the only thing i had change that could have saved me from over heating was the oil. when i told the service man when i last checked the fluids and where i had been between the checks, like me, he was just floored. i truly think that oil saved my engine from failure. given you are more dependent on your ride than i am mine i thought id share the story.
Hey Jake, just a suggestion… keep doing the oil changes in discrete locations so you don’t get hassled, but whenever you need to work on preventive maintenance stuff - distributors, alternators, fuel pumps, etc. - put yourself within walking distance of an Autozone or Oreillys store, just in case you have a sippycup moment.
Jake if you would, can you note what brand that tool roll is and where you picked it up? I really need to tidy up my tool bag, and a tool roll would be the ticket. I like the socket holder on the end. Thanks!
It always makes me happy when I read through the comments. Reason being, I never see a negative comment. You have the best fans Jake. Can't wait for the Colorado meet up. Great video as always
You could always change your oil in the parking lot of a part store. At Orileys we don't usually mind it at all when people do. Its easier to clean oil off concrete or pavement then to let it get in the dirt.
Hey iamjake! I've been binge watching your vlogs for a few days now and i gotta say i love what you're doing. I have a 02 wrangler that i absolutely love. just a tip if you want Jade running at her finest switch to a 10w-40 with zinc. 4.0 motors are flat tappet engines and over time without that zinc additive you'll start to get a valve tap. ( i found out the hard way). AMSOIL or ROYAL PURPLE is all I run. Keep up the good work! Cant wait to catch your next vlog!
I know nothin' about car/jeep maintenance and you STILL were able to make this video seem so cool and interesting! Keep up the great job Jake!!! (Ps, and I'm sad to admit but I own a '71 land cruiser FJ55 and know nothin about how to take care of it personally🙈🙈)
+Jake, don't worry about that engine. the 4.0L is known for its anvil like durability. I had one in my 95 wrangler, it had 225K on it when I gave it to my in-laws, it has almost 350K on it now. all I ever did to the engine was general maintenance, and oil changes every 3000 miles. Oh, and I replaced a cracked exhaust manifold, but that was my doing. long story. any way the spark plugs you pulled out of it look fantastic. if it was burning oil heavily, they would be black and carboned up. just remember that the Axles, transfer case, and transmission all need oil changes about every 5th time you change the oil or around 15000 miles. some say you can go as much as 30k but its cheap insurance especially if you off road a lot. I have screwed up the firing order a few times, I always seem to get #5 and #7 mixed up on small block chevys.
hey Jake I honestly would love to be a patron but honestly I don't have money not even 1 dollar a week, but just know you take me out of depression every time you upload.
John Smith I have a 1999 jeep wrangler and i was supposed to inherent it by my dad but due some very unfortunate problems he can't hand me it himself. and watching his videos reminded me of my dad.
ugh... I guess I can get past the really cheap oil filter, but at least run the extended capacity size. Ford 302 ("5.0") filters are a direct fitment for your 4.0 and are twice the size for the same price. They're a little tight to get in, but they do fit. edit: Some guys swear up and down they can't get them to fit. I suspect those guys have destroyed motor mounts. Eyeball yours well before you commit.
Hey Jake!! Yea Jade will make the journey, My 97 (Jurassic Park) TJ has 239,000 and still running strong!! My other other 97 TJ that I drive every day has only 55,000 on her!!!
Have owned plenty of Jeeps> Have a 95 XJ Country with 381K miles. The only way to get rid of the squeal is a GoodYear GatorBack belt> Its a pain to swap on the older jeeps but I cant stand the that noise
Hey Jake. Love the videos. That squeal is your idler pully. When I got my car it made the same noise. It's a cheap part and maybe a 20 minute job if anything. Best of luck.
Great video as always, I commented this on the last one, but I'm early this time. I was wondering if you do much photography along with your video. Myself, and I'm sure a lot of other people would be interested in seeing that. Maybe starting a gallery or even using them at the end of your videos, Just curious. Safe Travels - Nick
I know exactly how that is and hopefully it won't be a long down time. Jade broke down and was in the shop in Sacramento for 4-5 wks. Ken Nelson a Patreon pledge put Annie and I up until I was able to get Jade back on the road - Thanks again Ken!
OverlandNomad - so glad you found it. Great community Jake has built and welcome! If you haven't already, complete his 50 State Questionnaire so you cross paths someday. Link in video description!
Happy Freakin Mileage Jake! No worries.. I had 480k on my 89 Cherokee with the 4.0... no problems, keep the oil changed.. maybe use some rislone engine flush on the next oil change..
Nice work and maintenance habit. it will keep Jade breathing alive for a long time. Once again I will like to suggest yo reduce the weight on Jade, it stresses the body frame and consumes more fuel. Jeep wasn't meant to be this loaded. it was meant to travel light if not it wouldn't have been invented for the war! Nice scenery and music concept.
I've changed Jade's oil...rather I watched Jake do it... And why do they make distributor caps that can go on backwards? We sent men to the moon but they can't fix that?
Jake, I can't believe how consistently great your content is! Has anyone recommended you read "Blue Highways" By William Least Heat Moon? It's a great book and goes along perfectly with your trip. Keep it up!
Jake, there's no doubt the 4.0 is a strong engine. And not wishing any voodoo on you but let's say Jade's engine does crap out, what would you want to throw in next?
Mike Gurskiy haha I think its fine it goes with the content for me I think if it was changed to like something rather then the the electro remix music it'd feel different but change is good sometimes!
1:42 my 2001 xj has 289000 miles and still running strong! no doubt that jade can make it with her heart
Happy to hear it that is awesome! I believe in you Jade!
Wouldn't be here without you guys!
iamjake can't wait!
iamjake I can't wait for the next series of events. Thanks for sharing!
freaking A first show to hold my attention for more than 3 episodes !!
iamjake if you ever get to the point of an engine swap the new cummins r2.8 would be awesome
iamjake if you built a wooden subfloor deck in Jade there would be more storage, more organization and less weight up top and lol the awkward struggle of pulling the toolbox out would be no more. just a suggestion, I'm sure you have thought about it before
Love your chill upbeat vibes. Been watching since the sailboat and it's only getting better!
Mike Sullivan Same! Can't wait till he gets to NM for the Green Chile cheese burgers!
Omg, the Green Chile Cheese Burgers are dank. lol and the Green Chile Pizza's.
Hey Jake we have a 98 XJ with 338k with no major motor work. It's a daily, still running strong.
My jeep had a similar squeal I changed the blowing motor and haven't heard it since
Hey Jake I was wondering if you were planning on getting an offroad trailer in the future, you can get a lot of stuff off of jade especially the totes on the roof rack and add solar panels
For some reason, this has been my favorite vlog from you since a long time. I like to see more of Jade and her maintenance.
I have that same tool roll and it carries about 90% of my hand tools required to work on my Rubicon. Great space saver and easy to move to the part you're working on. Keep up the great videos!
with all those miles you might consider a bypass oil filter, it'll allow for longer oil change intervals
1:22 my aunt and uncle had 400-500k on theirs when they turned it in for the California car crusher program, or sounded like an ammo case full of marbles but kept going.
And a box of good quality disposable rubber gloves are priceless for keeping the oils and dirt out of your fingers.
KFStreich g
R u n Denver yet
Jerry probably just too much coffee
Nice you can do oil changes on the road.

All part of the adventure I guess :)
My buds got a YJ with an inline 6 and he got well over 250K with good engine maintenance
Annie shouldn't be getting in the water at the beginning of this video as it is farm field runoff with high concentrations of herbicide and fertilizers

loving the channel by the way. just awesome.

You'd think an aircraft mechanic could get through an oil change without a butterfingers/sippy cup moment. Hehehe!
*chuckle*
You should see most aircraft mechanics...
iamjake lol that is so the truth.
FIELD WORK!!! Had to do a full front end brake job on my ZJ once. Horrible in the moment, loved it after.
Jake if you would, can you note what brand that tool roll is and where you picked it up? I really need to tidy up my tool bag, and a tool roll would be the ticket. I like the socket holder on the end. Thanks!
Oh, the location of the oil filter is so easy to reach. The oil filter in the JK is underneath, it's a pain in the neck sometimes.
Look up rampage trail can they have a hollow one and one with tool trays , it looks like a jerry can so you can keep it in a jerry can location
It always makes me happy when I read through the comments. Reason being, I never see a negative comment. You have the best fans Jake. Can't wait for the Colorado meet up. Great video as always
It's because Jake deletes the negative comments. Regardless, his videos are the best of the nomad genre.
David how do you know Jake deletes negative comments?
You could always change your oil in the parking lot of a part store. At Orileys we don't usually mind it at all when people do. Its easier to clean oil off concrete or pavement then to let it get in the dirt.
Always use a drop cloth (a big one) when doing a oil change.
How do you fly the Mavic pro when you are driving? Does it have a follow mode? Awesome vids BTW
381,000 miles on my XJ with the 4.0L and engine has never been apart. and 281,000 on my WK with the 3.0L Diesel.
Awesome drone shots of the Ridgway and Ouray area!😍

KILLA XD ❤️
KILLA XD do you feel inspired. are you one day gonna do the same.?
John Smith I honestly would love too
KILLA XD well I support. start trying to save and go for it. should take you out of depression.
John Smith I have a 1999 jeep wrangler and i was supposed to inherent it by my dad but due some very unfortunate problems he can't hand me it himself. and watching his videos reminded me of my dad.
Nice road wrenching Jake. What tool roll is that? I think you'll like that much better than your box for the frequently used tools.
TheGadgetAddict you can find them on amazon for cheap!
Cherokee here, have 269k Miles, can confirm 4.0s go forever.
ugh... I guess I can get past the really cheap oil filter, but at least run the extended capacity size. Ford 302 ("5.0") filters are a direct fitment for your 4.0 and are twice the size for the same price. They're a little tight to get in, but they do fit.

another day in paradise... always found Jeep maintenance is relaxing... to a point..lol
192k on my 97' 4.0 here, still going strong!
had a 91 cherokee laredo with the straight 6 and logged approx 400k, no rebuilds. those engines are nearly bullet proof
I have 228,000+ on mine and have no issues, runs perfect. Doesn't even smoke.
I use the cheaper amazon tactical style backpacks for my tools. They are great..
354,000 on my 2000 4.0 WJ when I sold her. She was still ticking along.
The only way to get rid of the squeal is a GoodYear GatorBack belt>
Its a pain to swap on the older jeeps but I cant stand the that noise
Isn't having a open cai not a really good idea for a off-road vehicle? I just put a banks ram air on my jk but it has a housing around it.
My fur kid loves your channel. I posted a video of her watching Annie on social media. She tries to get into the tv to play with her.
the beginning of that intro song really messed with my head in a great way
Hey Jake. Love the videos. That squeal is your idler pully. When I got my car it made the same noise. It's a cheap part and maybe a 20 minute job if anything. Best of luck.
Always looking foreword to your videos, thanks for the great content. :)
Thanks! and thank YOU for the support!
I’ve GOT to learn that dismount from the Jeep.....
What boots are you wearing?
Hey Scott - he's are Red Wings
Great video as always, I commented this on the last one, but I'm early this time. I was wondering if you do much photography along with your video. Myself, and I'm sure a lot of other people would be interested in seeing that. Maybe starting a gallery or even using them at the end of your videos, Just curious. Safe Travels - Nick
He does take some photos. You can see his Yosemite ones in the California report. spark.adobe.com/page/3KX2Mt92d6gGu/
Hey Jake, I remember you playing guitar at a friends wedding. Do you have plans on adding a guitar to your travel gear?
Jake I have been watching ur videos like this is a Netflix show. I love this and I will eventually do this journey with friends as well.
Mohamad Masri - Thank you!
Glad you got all that work done, but man those cold air intake setups are terrible.
Envious of your lifestyle!
Hopefully I can live like you one day.
Hey Jake, you inspired my roomate and I to go ahead with the nomad lifestyle. Hope to see you on the road some day
That's awesome! Be safe and i'm sure you'll love it!
iamjake well unfortunately now we're stuck in Searcy Arkansas because the transmission went out. :/
I know exactly how that is and hopefully it won't be a long down time. Jade broke down and was in the shop in Sacramento for 4-5 wks. Ken Nelson a Patreon pledge put Annie and I up until I was able to get Jade back on the road - Thanks again Ken!
those drain pans are horrible, I use the same one with a large mouth cat litter container (around 5 gallons) and zero spills.
You need the Blue Ridge Overland gear tool bag.
Can't wait until you make it to Michigan hopefully you can have meet up
Hey Jake my dream is to retire in the boulder junction Wisconsin area.
How come I've never seen this channel?! I'm hooked.
OverlandNomad - so glad you found it. Great community Jake has built and welcome! If you haven't already, complete his 50 State Questionnaire so you cross paths someday. Link in video description!
Ken Nelson thanks for that!
You're welcome and thank you for completing the questionnaire!
Happy Freakin Mileage Jake! No worries.. I had 480k on my 89 Cherokee with the 4.0... no problems, keep the oil changed.. maybe use some rislone engine flush on the next oil change..
Glad it worked out Jake!
Also is Kansas is your next state if it isn't when will you come to Kansas
class of 96 mhs indians. happy to leave the town. much to do less than and hour either way. check Black Canyon
Thanks for another great video Jake! Great work 👍🏻
Mornin' Jake!
Mornin' Ben
Anners freaking bannaners ! Your story is awesome to watch
Does your Jeep have a clutch fan? That is what the squealing sounds like to me. Jim
Those shots at the end were amazing
Sippy cup moment.
I've changed Jade's oil...rather I watched Jake do it...
And why do they make distributor caps that can go on backwards? We sent men to the moon but they can't fix that?
Win you coming to Michigan??
Somebody give this man a movie deal!!!
Nice video, awesome drone footage!
Hey jake
HEY!!
Spilling oil on pavements is actually better. Asphalt is made from oil so not a big concern.
I'm sure Jade is a happy girl now
Jake, I can't believe how consistently great your content is! Has anyone recommended you read "Blue Highways" By William Least Heat Moon? It's a great book and goes along perfectly with your trip. Keep it up!
How's it going Jake?
Just wanted to say Hello!
Hi Jake!!!
i Love watching your videos!!!
dude that old clip."we gotta do maintenance" looks so old and you look so young but it's like one year old haha
We have some similarities here. Cool video!
Dude save some of all that cardboard you get and put it under your jeep when oil changing, won't leave a mess and keep you out of trouble.
You da man Jake!
looks fun
If you want to get rid of the res tool box hit me up. Ill take it off your hands
Need some belt treatment
Jake, there's no doubt the 4.0 is a strong engine. And not wishing any voodoo on you but let's say Jade's engine does crap out, what would you want to throw in next?
Hey Sparks - he's thinking about a diesel swap.
Need a new drive belt(s).
K&N air filters are terrible for the longevity of an engine.
As much as you enjoy the outdoors you sure spill a lot of oil onto the ground
is this a YJ converted to look like a CJ?
Var S - I have always liked the look of the CJ. Jade is a YJ but the front clip, hard top, and tailgate are from a CJ. Thanks for your support!
If you're still in the Ridgway area tomorrow contact me and I'll take you to lunch
ever think about changing up the music? the funky electronic remixed stuff is getting a little stale. Great video content nonetheless.
Mike Gurskiy no
Mike Gurskiy haha I think its fine it goes with the content for me I think if it was changed to like something rather then the the electro remix music it'd feel different but change is good sometimes!
I've been binge watching for about 6 hours now lol, does anybody else wonder where he gets all this freaking money??
And how i can lol
'Sup Jake! :)
