As much as this episode showed how impressionable Eleven still is, I definitely think Max helped her start to define herself, and that's something she sorely needed.
Basically el needed a girl friend and max sure did help el be her own person

Tbh I didn't understand Max's petty toward Mike when I first watched season 3...until I did a series rewatch before season 4- the perfect payback: stealing your girlfriend and being besties. I know Mike was cold because he was depressed and El was jealous, but I'm still so amused by the end result. Female friendships are precious.

Anyone notice how Eleven has some of the best relationships in the show? Best couple is Mileven, one of the best friendships is her and Max, and her and Hopper are one of the most adorable families. Such a great character

One of the more regrettable things about El being separated from the other kids throughout almost all of season 2 is that she's rather cold to Max when they finally meet in the finale, and yet the two are like best friends by the start of season 3.
Which means El making friends with another girl her age for the first time happened entirely off-screen.
that isn't true, max and el became friends onscreen, when she goes to max for advice when mike lies to her. previously she'd only really been hanging out with mike.
