I remember the wax soda bottles.
You can still find them today!
I do remember the wax bottles. It seemed OK if I remember correctly. Great Video Everyone?🤘🏻👍🏻🇺🇲
Thank you as always Z Man! Glad you enjoyed this one.
I actually love Nik-L-Nip. I used to love biting the top of the bottles off and sucking out the syrup inside. Funny story, I used to think they were called Nip-n-Sip. I don't know why, though.
Also, can you please do a video on sour candies from the 70s, 80s and 90s? Thanks in advance!
Nip-N-Sip is still a good name. Either would have been fun.
I don't believe your story about trading candy with your "friends" you weren't raised like that and you know it. You don't need to make things up. Just tell the truth.
That’s his story and he’s sticking to it! 😆
@@RetroDaze:p you're awesome
I liked the wax lips, wear em for a little bit then be destructive and chew them up.
@@xanselmox 😆 Such a ‘kid’ way of doing things!
Never liked the wax candies. I only had them around Halloween for the fangs. They tasted like nothing and never lasted. How about those dots on paper? I haven't seen those in a while.
True! Are they still made?
@@RetroDazeYes, I see them every once in a while.
I never understood the appeal either. I did like the juice in the wax bottles, but I never understood how the wax was supposed to be "gum". I tried chewing it (both from the bottle, and ax lips) a few times, and it didn't stay together like gum, it just broke apart and I'd end up quickly spitting it out. I so recall having one of those harmonicas though.
Exactly! The claim of being “gum” is questionable at best.
A Nip as a noun, is a small quantity of liquor. These wax candies were great workout for jaw muscles.
😆 They could definitely work those jaws!
This was a fairly negative view of wax candy. These were, and still are a big fall treat in the northeast. My wife actually bought me wax vampire teeth she found at the grocery today and it was an awesome surprise. They had mustachios too. The cashier said “get them before they are gone”. The wowee wax whistle is the king of wax candy IMHO. They tasted like teaberry gum, another old favorite.
We definitely don’t want to dump on these wax oddities. After all, they hold a place in special memories. Even so, they are a peculiar part of our childhoods. Not quite satisfying in the way regular candy is.
@@RetroDaze I think what they lacked in candy value, the made up for in play value. More like a costume confection 😁. At least for the lips, teeth, and mustachios.
@@gwargumm9511 You can blame the "negative" vibes on me. As I was writing this one, despite the intrinsic play value as you mentioned, I mostly was musing on the oddity factor of "wax as candy." But you're right to say they are historically important and obviously popular enough to have stood the test of time.
pinches & pounds Whitman Ma.
What is this place you mention?
LOVE the wax lips, the flavor made me happy, and it lasted long enough until the wax was chewed to the point of no chew left.
The wax harmonica was fun and flavorful too.
I haven't had any for years. I wonder how my false teeth would stand up to them now? lol
Best not to find out. 😆
The wax bottles was one of my go to's as a kid.
Cheap and a quick sugar fix!
I miss those
As someone from germany I only knew Waxlips- and that only (sorta) because of Monkey Island AND as you showed, The Simpsons. Up to now I didn't even know it was a candy. Wondered why it was at the candy fair on Simpsons😂. BTW, you nerd room background is a beauty !🙏🏾
We’ve reached Germany! Awesome! Welcome. It is questionable to call these ‘candy’. That much is certain.
I had fun memories of wax drinks because my Grandma often had them for us!
Thanks Jon and RetroDaze Gang
👊🏻😎❤️
Thank YOU Ted! Always good to get your thoughts on these.
I forgot about the harmonicas, couldn't get them to work. I got the bottles a lot and always got some lips and fangs around Halloween. I think the appeal was that my brain thought of them as toys made out of plastic but chewable, like I was thinking, "LOOK, I'm eating TOYS!", which is slightly fun when you're poor. I always liked candles with a play factor, like Mr. Bones, PEZ, candy necklaces, etc.
Yes! Candy that doubled as toys or novelties could be the most enjoyable.
Kids like weird stuff. I still kinda like weird stuff. Wax candy tastes like nothing and feels weird when you chew it and I ALWAYS spat it out! That was the appeal for me. There's no reasonable explanation. Great nostalgic vid!
Thank you Jeff! We have to agree… it’s beyond explanation except that we did indeed enjoy weird stuff.
Another cool video, Retro Daze! I watched this video with my grandma who was visiting. She said she had the Wax fangs & lips like you mentioned in the video. My bro and I had the Wax bottles.
Awesome Tyneisha! Glad we could be a part of your time with your Grandmother.
I remember way back in the 80s and my age was in the single digits, buying wax lips around Halloween. And they actually had flavor. But one year they just started to taste gross. I'll will just say, maybe they were always gross and I was very wrong at first 😂
@@MrClawt Perhaps some brands did a better job of flavoring?
I never understood the allure of wax candy. Tired it once as a kid and knew it wasn’t for me. Lol I enjoyed showing this to my daughter. Great video!
Thank you for that! Hope you both got a kick out of it.
I loved this when I was a kid wax 👄 and little wax bottles with fruit flavoured liquid inside of them 😊❤❤
The upside was that they were inexpensive and plentiful. A nice, quick sugar hit.
@@RetroDaze indeed 😃👍🏼👍🏼
I remember getting the wax lips, bottles, and the harmonica. Yeah, they never had much of a flavor, but they were fun to have around occasionally. The harmonica was not a bad idea, although after a while, it did melt. The usual progression was you’d wear it for a while, either until it broke, or you chewed the back of it off, then you’d chew the wax for a while, until it lost flavor, then spit it out.
I always looked at them more as a novelty item than candy.
Eventually those wax items would break down.
Wax lips ....they were my favorite.
Did you just wear them? Chew on them?
I forgot about the Wax Harmonica.
They were probably the most interactive of the wax novelties.
I've been craving a fifth avenue 🫡😋🤤🔥
We just made those cravings worse! Sorry!
This stuff was so nasty tasting but was so fun to play with
For a while at least.
I only got wax lips a few times in my trick or treat bucket, but I remember being a fan of them. I enjoyed the texture of the wax and the cherry flavor. The bottles were awful though, it was a different type of wax that would crumble and wasn't chewy like the wax lips.
Good point. Not all the wax items had the same consistency.
I am with you concerning wax bottles. They have always been around but I seldom saw anyone with them. Now back in the day, I remember getting them at a birthday party or something but I never asked for them or bought them myself. Same for all the other wax "candy". I'm good thanks!
It’s all subjective of course, but it’s hard to imagine being a kid and passing up candy bars and such for these.
I only tried the wax bottles a few times back in the day and I never enjoyed it. The syrup stuff in them always tasted like some kind of chemical you're not supposed to drink with a hint of fruit flavor.
Possibly the mix of wax and sugar syrup aren’t a good flavor combo. 😝
someday voiceover john is going to have enough of on cam john's interruptions. There's going to be a challenge on the playground after class. I want to be there, i've just have to keep my ears open to hear the kid running around the school yard yelling "FIGHT!"
@@kronvlat We’re putting our money on On-Cam Jon. Notice Voiceover Jon never comes around when On-Cam Jon is here? He’s afraid.
I remember the wax bottles with the juice in them. Never knew the history of them (which was neat to find out!) but we used to get them by the bag full at the convenience store when I was a kid back in the early '80s.
They were cheap, plentiful, and a quick sugar fix.
There used to be these waxy candy pumpkins i used to get as a kid that I can't seem to find anymore
Those sound absolutely delightful! Well, for being wax anyway. 😆
I want to chew wax now. I was a fan.
Well you can’t be alone. They sell enough of the stuff! 😆
