    I actually love Nik-L-Nip. I used to love biting the top of the bottles off and sucking out the syrup inside. Funny story, I used to think they were called Nip-n-Sip. I don't know why, though.
    Also, can you please do a video on sour candies from the 70s, 80s and 90s? Thanks in advance!

    Never liked the wax candies. I only had them around Halloween for the fangs. They tasted like nothing and never lasted. How about those dots on paper? I haven't seen those in a while.

    I never understood the appeal either. I did like the juice in the wax bottles, but I never understood how the wax was supposed to be "gum". I tried chewing it (both from the bottle, and ax lips) a few times, and it didn't stay together like gum, it just broke apart and I'd end up quickly spitting it out. I so recall having one of those harmonicas though.

    • @RetroDaze
      @RetroDaze  14 днів тому

      Exactly! The claim of being “gum” is questionable at best.

    This was a fairly negative view of wax candy. These were, and still are a big fall treat in the northeast. My wife actually bought me wax vampire teeth she found at the grocery today and it was an awesome surprise. They had mustachios too. The cashier said “get them before they are gone”. The wowee wax whistle is the king of wax candy IMHO. They tasted like teaberry gum, another old favorite.

    • @RetroDaze
      @RetroDaze  14 днів тому +1

      We definitely don’t want to dump on these wax oddities. After all, they hold a place in special memories. Even so, they are a peculiar part of our childhoods. Not quite satisfying in the way regular candy is.

    • @gwargumm9511
      @gwargumm9511 14 днів тому +3

      @@RetroDaze I think what they lacked in candy value, the made up for in play value. More like a costume confection 😁. At least for the lips, teeth, and mustachios.

    • @AnthonyJRapino
      @AnthonyJRapino 14 днів тому

      @@gwargumm9511 You can blame the "negative" vibes on me. As I was writing this one, despite the intrinsic play value as you mentioned, I mostly was musing on the oddity factor of "wax as candy." But you're right to say they are historically important and obviously popular enough to have stood the test of time.

    I forgot about the harmonicas, couldn't get them to work. I got the bottles a lot and always got some lips and fangs around Halloween. I think the appeal was that my brain thought of them as toys made out of plastic but chewable, like I was thinking, "LOOK, I'm eating TOYS!", which is slightly fun when you're poor. I always liked candles with a play factor, like Mr. Bones, PEZ, candy necklaces, etc.

    I remember getting the wax lips, bottles, and the harmonica. Yeah, they never had much of a flavor, but they were fun to have around occasionally. The harmonica was not a bad idea, although after a while, it did melt. The usual progression was you’d wear it for a while, either until it broke, or you chewed the back of it off, then you’d chew the wax for a while, until it lost flavor, then spit it out.
    I always looked at them more as a novelty item than candy.
