This is a real test from all the Hype and myths posted on youtube on lacquer thinner cleaning out a Catalytic Converter with a PO420 code. Here I show you my results.
This trick absolutely works! I was completely skeptical at first and very afraid of doing it ,but your supposed to put 1/2 tank of fuel and one gallon of lacquer thinner. It worked like a charm and my 420 code never came back. If that does not work take the catalytic converter off and fill you up a bucket of water and dish soap or laundry detergent. Soak the catalytic converter overnight and blow it off dry with an air gun of some sort. If you don't have any way of having compressed air then just use a clean cloth. All credits go to the Scotty Kilmer Channel.
tried on Mitsubishi Outlander Sport 2015 ES, after driving 340 miles catalytic converter totally clean and smooth, now definitely notice gas saving. thanks so much, you saved me.
It WORKED for me. The P0420 codes was tripped on my vehicle for about 6 months straight. I finally tried the lacquer thinner trick and without manually resetting the code with the plug-in tool the code reset itself through driving. I have a GMC Acadia. I put 1 gallon of lacquer thinner into ~10 gallons of gas. I then drove around my city's interstate beltline at about 65 mph for approximately 2 hours. The check engine light went off, the car reset the code on its own. It hasn't come back on and it has been nearly 2 months. Worked perfect when following the instructions perfectly: Add 1 gallon lacquer thinner to ~10 gallons of gas and then drive at highway speeds non-stop until all 10 gallons are gone. Voila, code gone.
YOU ARE MORE WRONG THAN WRONG PERMITS. Lacquer Thinner DOES INDEED clear clogged cat-cons because I just did it yesterday!! I brought my car into mechanic for overheating after already changing out thermostat, flushing radiator and locking down the whole cooling system. He put car on reader and it came back with 72 TROUBLE CODES !! One of them being a bad cat-con and another bad coolant temp sensor which turned out to be the ONLY valid trouble codes. After an hour of research i showed back up at mechanic with a gallon of lacquer thinner and a big grin. Mechanic said what the hell you doin?? and I said whats it look like im doin' ...I'm pouring this here gallon of lacquer thinner in my gas tank . Ohh man youre gonna fuck up that engine even more dude !! NO I'M NOT...and as a matter of fact this will not only clear my cat convertor it will make all those trouble codes VANISH AND THIS CAR WILL SMOG ON THE FIRST TRY. He said NO WAY IN HELL DUDE. I said ...just watch me. I poured that gallon in top of a half tank of 92 octane got a stick ...pressed down on the gas i hit 2500 RPMs locked it in and let er run. Told dude i would be back in a hour. Came back the car was down to an eighth of a tank and was NOT overheating which was a very good sign. Told dude to put it on the diagnostic to check to see if the codes were gone and he said i had to drive it 90 miles first so all the sensors can reset. I knew that number was just a safety buffer and the real number was probably about 20 or 30 miles. So knowing that I drove it about 30 miles and brought it straight to the smog guy this morning. He put the car on his reader .........no codes !! THE CAR PASSED SMOG WITH FLYING COLORS THE FIRST TRY. BAMMM...MICROPHONE DEE-ROPPP. In yo face !!!! 1 gallon of lacquer thinner and a drop of faith was all it took. So don't put out false information from inconclusive testing results. LACQUER THINNER WILL UN-CLOG CATALYTIC CONVERTORS...PERIOD...END OF STORY.

I have a ford escape 65000 miles. Worked for awhile after resetting po420 code. All stared when I added stp oil and overfilled oil. I believe it got in exhaust system. I read l.t. can even break down tar. So I decided to try. Put 32 oz kleen strip in 3 gallons drove. Check engine came back on. Reset again. It seems the intervals with light are longer and longer. Performance is good. So I believe it did some good. My thought is it's very combustible and makes the fuel mixture burn hotter and in turns cleans the honeycombs in cat.

Hey I bought another gallon yesterday at Advanced auto 14.99 4.00 cheaper than Wal-Mart I'm going to start using it as a maintenance thing in my 99 Camry and 01 tundra every 2nd year.
I will use 1 gallon in 1/2 tank (6.5 gallons of regular gas is Corolla's 1/2 tank) on my 1999 Corolla with 282K miles and original catalytic converter. Nearly trouble free for 20 years and starts every single time; every day . Local driving never over 50 or so MPH for the past 10 years. And I already have the slender and long tapered funnel for adding things to gasoline. Well worth the money to save having messes with flammable liquids. My fuel pump is brand new.... installed by a local 'mobile mechanic' and it was original. The old 'sock' was somewhat dirty and stained.

Nearly 20 years ago I was having transmission problems in my 1990 something Honda Accord and my grandfather put lacquer thinner in my transmission fluid. I thought I was going to have a heart attack in my early twenties would that be my only car and being a single mom. I'll be damned if I never had a transmission issue ever again with that car and I drove it for years!! Basically all the lacquer that it does is it cleans everything all sparkling clean and then evaporates, leaving no residuals from it.
I did my first Lac. This will be a little long, so please bear with me... I have a 1997 Chevy Silverado with a 305 engine in it and it just turned 301K miles. About 6 years ago, I had to replace the fuel spider. Two years later, I had to replace the head gaskets at a cost of $2400. I was told at that time I would need to replace the fuel spider again because they could not get the engine to run smooth. At that time, I just could not afford that, so I drove the truck for 4 years with a missfire in #5. About 6 months ago, I changed out the plug wires and plugs and the old truck started to run a little better. One month ago I added a bottle of Red Line fuel system cleaner to a full tank of gas and it did improve a bit. So...after doing some research, I came across this Lacquer thinner trick. Now, I did a load of reading and watched several you-tube videos on the subject. I decided to give it a try. So on Aug 31, I put in 10 gallons of gas and one gallon thinner and headed off to a doctor's appoointment. I drove 90 miles to the appointment and the truck sat in the parking lot for a little over one hour and then I drove the 90 miless back home. When I put the thinner in, I was getting a p305 and p420 code. RESULTS: I got 147 miles on that 10 gallons of lacquer/gas. Out on the open road doing 70 the truck ran good. Once I got into town and started hitting the lights, it ran a little rougher than usual. When I got home, I checked the codes again. I still have the p305 but it did drop the p420 code. The truck seems to me to be running a little rougher now but I will have to give it some more time running on clean gas. So, as far as the p420 code, I did get good results. I will add another bottle of Red Line when I top off the tank next week. At this point, I have nothing to lose.
If you have a manual stick it in 3rd and thrash it down highway for 2/3 miles if you have an auto rev the engine for 5 mins at high revs. I suppose the thinner gives a cleaner and hotter burn
I DID THIS AND PASSED TODAY. HALF A TANK OF GAS AND 1 GALLON OF THINNER FROM AMAZON. I ALSO WENT FOR THE SMOG WHILE THE THINNER WAS IN THE TALK, IT DOES SEEM TO INCRESE POWER OUT. FOR A FEW DAYS I DROVE AROUND TOWN HARD, RITE BEFORE THE 100 MILE DRIVE I RESET MY CAR COMPUTER BY DISCONNECTING BATT. 5 DAYS LATTER I WENT IN FOR SMOG BEFORE RAN OUT OF THINNER. BOOM IT REALLY WORKS !!!
It also works on my 2006 6.0 powerstoke. I used lacquer thinner one time to help with sticking of the injectors. After that I used brake cleaner. Brake cleaner is very safe on a diesel because it doesnt ignite the glow plugs and turn them into a spark plug, and it doesnt swell the seals and gaskets like thinner will. Truck is so smooth you can't feel it running at a stop light. Try brake parts cleaner you won't regret it
i have 2 bad cats and tried this method and the car seems to be running and breathing better just a quarter tank down. Im not even driving it, just revving it to 2k rpms
Worked for me. 2010 nissan sentra 2.0 engine. The proportion is different I used. 4 gallons of gas to 1 gallon laquer. All I did is drive around . Not all at once. Over a period of a week. Light went off and car runs much better. I had 92000 miles on car. But I do have a lot of rattle noises in cat and rest of exhaust system. Something broke loose in cat. Probably will still have to replace cat.
Well my brother called yesterday, cataylst under thrushold something like that thinking he might need t9 try this, 2009 Chevy traverse! Not sure the code numbers but ill direct him to your page! With the years experience you have your words are welcome cause you don't have to do this for us ( like a helping hand) Thanks for what you do man. Greatly appreciated!!
@@mrrmsfucker146 I did exactly that on my 06 chevy malibu 300 miles later no check engine HOWEVER it wouldn't pass smog becuase i/m readliness was not ready due to cat not htd I then removed the spacers and made it 20 more miles and got cle p0420 my theory at least for my car is yes spacers do work BUT also keep the i/m readiness system from becoming ready since it doesn't allow the cat htd portion to complete
I've Never seen a video from that scotty guy on that. 2nd this is my test, It failed to clean it on a 3rd car that had a dirty catalytic converter. This rarely works because cats get so hot from bad engine management, there's nothing you can do but replace it. No one is talking smack here. Its just my life time experience on this subject (45 years). But hey some get lucky. Thanks for watching.
First of all ''who" set the standards for running it 150 miles a day?? 2500 RPMs for a half hour... V 100 miles a day or 500 miles a day?? There is no real science or expert wright ups on this. Perhaps in rare cases this works....Everyone has there own option on how to do this. Most of the time it does not work. PO420 code is usually a burnt up cat from poor engine management over time. So the best option is to just replace it. This has been My test results over 45 years of auto repairs. Find a video that "proves" this actually works with a scan tool, then buy stock in lacquer thinner...lol You'll be rich! ....Now for a cat with mud or crap in it just clogging it up well a good soaking might glean it up. But were talking about two different things here. -Thanks for watching.
@@FixingWithPassion no you do not have an option if you don't clear that out of your system the first day that you do this it will damage your engine that is why you have to get it out within 150 miles lol
seems as if this works from the comments and what Scotty kilmer says so I'm about to try it. one question, should I run the 100 to 150 miles all at once like drive 75 miles away and come back or can I run like 30 mi stop the car run another 30 miles stop the car etc. or should I drive all the miles at once? thanks
Lacquer thinner won't unblock a catalytic converter. That requires getting the exhaust hot enough to burn off carbon ,eg a long highway drive. However lacquer thinner will clean the fuel system, injectors etc. ( The commercisl injector cleaner products ate just thinners with a bit of dye.)
Inaccurate information, Lacquer thinner acts as a burns off many clogged or corroded components in a Vehicle. The Top of them being a Catalytic Converter because the Fuel Injectors shoot that mixture of fuel and Thinner into the Combustion chamber which then has a reaction to any build up. Then goes through the exhaust system as a Fume or mist which then spreads onto all parts of the Catalytic Converter then down to the Cleaner Cats if your vehicle is equipped with them, Down to the Resonators and into the muffler. IT is not a harmful contamination to your vehicles components as to the regular vehicle additives that restrict you from having certain vehicle areas cleaned throughly. Vehicle additives = Money for there corporation/company.
Scott Kilner says the light will come on if the converter is running at 94% which isn't terrible. Maybe just put some cat cleaner in the fuel tank and run it.
This made me clam up a bit. My expedition likes to throw me engine lights every so often, and I just look for the issues. Last time it was just a nasty air-intake filter. Not too sure what code I had ( Don't own an OBD2 scanner, yet! ). Hope this works for you, man. She is a good truck.
I picked up a bluedriver scanner per Scotty Kilmer $115 on Amazon that's a good scanner and gives a reported ways to solve the particular check engine code, I've been real pleased it's it diagnosed a map sensor problem for my friend's car, course I had problem getting the engine cover off , a real mechanic professional mechanic looked at it and bent his head down and noticed that there was a clamp holding the cover In place, so simple twist the screwdriver and the cover was off , and then It was also interesting the map sensor came with Orange a piece that I guess was protecting The sensor or maybe it had to do something on various ways to mount it and what he did was take the orange rubber cover Off,, mounted the sensor and then it fixed my Friends car right up ua-cam.com/video/b6O3WUP7kNQ/v-deo.html
I will post back to prove you wrong when I reset my light and never comes back on, I used catayclean and gumout before and it stayed off only for a while. If your cat is plugged you won't clean it, that is what I was afraid of, also have a temp spike in town to halfway I did coolant flushing and coolant leak fixing and still does it, I'm convinced it's my CAT. Waiting to find out, but will be a nice $50 fix if I don't have to replace the cat.
Also Is a 420 code always on the passenger side my step grand daughter has a Lexus 300 with a 430 and a friend told me that was on the passenger side on her car.
My converter is about 1 year old and i have the 420 code. It stayed off for the first 6 months. I need to check the temp before and after on my converter first but i may just try replacing the downstream O2 sensor. I will never dump lacquer thinner in my gas tank. The light has been on for 6 months as it is so who cares and i still get about the same mileage anyway.
I'm wondering if I could do the lacquer thinner thing as preventative maintenance ? I have almost 200K on my '02 DOHC Taurus, and I don't have any engine light on.
Estiben 1 gallon to half tank cleaned out my 98 Expy. 4.6L. But it took a couple weeks for the ck eng light to disappear after burning through the lacquer thinner. Update.4 months and still no idiot light 💡

Really concerned about damage to other engine components due to laquer thinner on hoses, injectors, fuel system, got 20 k invested in my 2000 Acura TL, afraid to take the chance on destroying my engine, I live in Arkansas, and many people here remove them due to no inspection s in Arkansas, will this improve profirmance or are it run worse, please respond when you get time, thanks,

So, as far as the p420 code, I did get good results. I will add another bottle of Red Line when I top off the tank next week. At this point, I have nothing to lose.
Curious as to the end result of all of this?
$100 for the converter and $200 to install would be amazing haha.
Right!!
Is the lacquer thinner oil based or acetone?
It works, known this since the mid 70's . Don't splash thinners on to any paint work,
If you have a manual stick it in 3rd and thrash it down highway for 2/3 miles if you have an auto rev the engine for 5 mins at high revs. I suppose the thinner gives a cleaner and hotter burn
is this same as Paint Thinner?
It worked for me ,I just passed smog
Nice!!
$13 a gallon! Not any more. LOL
I paid $24 at a local Walmart in L.A area and in 2024
Lacquer thinner also fixed my trouble code PO420
Lucky bastard!
Try brake parts cleaner you won't regret it
can i use this Thinner on Civic AT, im using unleaded
Nice!
i have 2 bad cats and tried this method and the car seems to be running and breathing better just a quarter tank down. Im not even driving it, just revving it to 2k rpms
Does it work with diesel trucks,
Nope
Thanks! I hope it works!
lemme know what happens with your bros chevy i have the same dreaded code in my 2012 chevy aswell!
Testing is still under way! Hopefully soon.
Use two stacked spark plug defowlers to the rear o2 sensors closest to the tail pipe.
Lacquer thinner and gas does work it work for mine it cleaned the catalytic converter the light went off by itself !
Will it clean the 02's as well?
do you feel any performance or mpg difference before and after the thinner ?
I tried it on my 2018 ram pro master, I saw a significant difference on the gas mileage.
After the cleaner is through light is still on disconnect battery terminals and reconnect
13$ a gal you paid, 5yrs later at home depot gal lacquer thinner is $23.95 + tax...
Right!
Lacquer thinner eat rubber and plastic in fuel system?
Scotty says sometimes
Scotty said its good for cleaning fuel injection also. I can see that. Waiting on store to open bout to get a gal. 👍
It is. Lets hope the cats are not all ready damaged.
@@FixingWithPassion worked like a charm. 99 nissan maxima
It's funny how many people talk smack about the original video from Scotty or make money of him in a way
I've Never seen a video from that scotty guy on that.
I just saw he passed...
Brother, how much thinner I put in the fuel tank, and how many times a year we can use it
1gal thinner per 5 gallons of gas
You're supposed to run the hundred fifty miles the first day you put the stuff in not overtime or run the car at 2500 RPMs for a half hour
@@FixingWithPassion no you do not have an option if you don't clear that out of your system the first day that you do this it will damage your engine that is why you have to get it out within 150 miles lol
is safe for the gasoline tank and the engine using the thinner in?
seems as if this works from the comments and what Scotty kilmer says so I'm about to try it. one question, should I run the 100 to 150 miles all at once like drive 75 miles away and come back or can I run like 30 mi stop the car run another 30 miles stop the car etc. or should I drive all the miles at once? thanks
Worked for me!!
Should I try on my 2012 hyndai genesis r spec 5.0?
Lacquer thinner won't unblock a catalytic converter. That requires getting the exhaust hot enough to burn off carbon ,eg a long highway drive.
However lacquer thinner will clean the fuel system, injectors etc. ( The commercisl injector cleaner products ate just thinners with a bit of dye.)
Ive done this on 2 cars with clogged cats. It definitely does work.
@@nonconsensusmedicine4755 True..1000%
It worked well!
Y 2000 Acura TL is throwing the p402 code for clogged converter, it's running excellent but isnoisy at higher revs, ny suggestions that are safe?
Scott Kilner says the light will come on if the converter is running at 94% which isn't terrible. Maybe just put some cat cleaner in the fuel tank and run it.
This made me clam up a bit. My expedition likes to throw me engine lights every so often, and I just look for the issues. Last time it was just a nasty air-intake filter. Not too sure what code I had ( Don't own an OBD2 scanner, yet! ). Hope this works for you, man. She is a good truck.
Thanks!
you can get an OBD2 that works with your cellphone for under $20.

Would xylene work just wondering 🤔
Converters can last alot longer than 200k
Safe for diesel engines?
No, not safe. You will destroy your diesel engine
Ok man!
@@FixingWithPassion So far no temp.spike, but only drove it once since filling it back up 50 miles.Runs with more punch though
Put a hole in the top of the can it want chuk thanks i'm trying this on my 06 f 150
so it does not hurt the gasoline engine ?
Has anyone here ever tried soaking the catalytic converter in a gallon of carburetor cleaner? Good idea? Bad idea?
Soaking it in lacquer/paint thinner is optimal, running it through the engine is the easy way
Old school trick my grandfather told me about this!
As long as the cats are good (not melted) it might work.
I have a 91 Mustang GT Cadillac converter is glowing red don't have a tag can I try that and without driving it and just let it sit there and idle?
yeah thats what i did and it worked
Shall I drive in high way and in one day to consume the half tank of gas or I can drive in the city for 2 or 3 days ? Thanks.
High way would be better.
@@FixingWithPassion thanks bro, I will try it today.
Also Is a 420 code always on the passenger side my step grand daughter has a Lexus 300 with a 430 and a friend told me that was on the passenger side on her car.
The ratio is 1 gallon of lacquer thinner to 1/2 full tank of gas.
Mmmmm considering all the different sizes. It's actually per gallon.
20% ratio , example; 1 gal of lacquer thinner to 5 gal of gas
My converter is about 1 year old and i have the 420 code. It stayed off for the first 6 months. I need to check the temp before and after on my converter first but i may just try replacing the downstream O2 sensor. I will never dump lacquer thinner in my gas tank. The light has been on for 6 months as it is so who cares and i still get about the same mileage anyway.
Yea its a issue lasting on and off.
I'm wondering if I could do the lacquer thinner thing as preventative maintenance ? I have almost 200K on my '02 DOHC Taurus, and I don't have any engine light on.
do it once every 30k miles
Is the lacquer thinner that you buy in California different than regular lacquer thinner?
Haha great question! Our California lacquer thinner might be water-based instead of petroleum-based knowing California LMAO 😂😂
You probably can’t buy lacquer thinner in CA
Hi Nathan, my Honda city 2011 is showing code p0141. What does this mean.adding this will clear without any side effects 🤔. Heaps of thanks.
Can this be done as maintenance on a car that doesn’t get this code? I have a sensor that’s apparently bad but it was replaced 1 year ago
I was gonna ask the same thing hehe
So 1 liter of lacquer thinner to 4 liter of fuel is that correct?
1gallon lacquer thinner / 10 gallon gas
Will the lacquer thinner do its thing a Diesel engine ?
No do not use ina diesel.
when weather warm a evap-purge valve will go nuts. abs vsc fault can appear. toyota petrol.
This worked for me
Would it work on a suburban with flex fuel sensor. 05"
Ethanol is way tougher on seals than diluted Lacquer thinner
Truth!
That's because ethanol is an alcohol and lacquer thinner is a petroleum distillate
That expedition has 4 cats on it at least lol
How much To use on half tank of expédition 2003 5.4 triton?
Estiben 1 gallon to half tank cleaned out my 98 Expy. 4.6L. But it took a couple weeks for the ck eng light to disappear after burning through the lacquer thinner.
Update.4 months and still no idiot light 💡
95% Rubbing Alcohol worked to get my 1994 Chevy through emissions. Maybe give that a try??🤔
All American Dream Chaser also helps w freeze that’s all HEET is
Use e85 instead it's the same.
We are Special in Florida..We don't have that stupid Emissions testing here anymore ..They got rid of that money making gimmick ...Back when Florida had emission testing in the 1990's I junked many of Good vehicles. Couldn't afford to fix them .and couldn't get license plates if they didn't pass ...Was a Money Scam
Thanks for the vid. Will the thinner damage the fuel filter at all.
No it wont ...it's a petroleum based product AND WILL CLEAR A CLOGGED CAT and all the false trouble codes it is throwing at you...I did it yesterday and passed smog first try this morning
No, its just a cleaner
Really concerned about damage to other engine components due to laquer thinner on hoses, injectors, fuel system, got 20 k invested in my 2000 Acura TL, afraid to take the chance on destroying my engine, I live in Arkansas, and many people here remove them due to no inspection s in Arkansas, will this improve profirmance or are it run worse, please respond when you get time, thanks,
Doesn't affect performance
Nick Hines dont be a wus Nick. Scotty says its Ok
Laquer thinner is pretty
Mild compared to ethanol. You are running 10% ethanol all the time.
What if the oxygen sensors are also bad ?
Then you buy another car
It worked for me
Cool!
So, 6 months later, where's part II?
