  • At lap 160 in the Daytona 500, with caution out due to another incident, Juan Pablo Montoya lost control of his #42 Target Chevy Impala and crashed into a jet dryer truck/trailer. The jet engine, carried on a trailer behind a pickup truck, and used to blow hot air for drying the track or clearing debris, started to leak 200 gallons of jet fuel. This, combined with diesel fuel leaking from the pickup, was subsequently ignited by heat and/or sparks from the crash.
After about 2 1/2 hours, the cleanup was complete and the race resumed and was finished. Juan Pablo Montoya and the driver of the pickup pulling the jet dryer were both examined and released. No injuries were reported.
