I was at high school when I fell in love with this band. bought almost all of their albums. watch them in live gigs. I.e . zoo lake spring festival. park Station revamp and at Bellevue east .
Heard them on public radio jazz station in the early-80’s not long after I got my first bass- was really blown away. Glad you enjoyed it and thank you for commenting-
True. And a wonderful human being. I was fortunate to meet him quite a few times through a friend in the 80s in Jhb. Saw them play a few times too. This Sakhile album should be celebrated all over - it's just so great !
Khaya "Cool" Mahlangu (Sax and Clarinet), Sipho "Fingers" Gumede (Bass), Mabhi "Sangoma" Thobenjani (Percussions), Themba "Khabazela" Mkhize (Keyboards), Madoda (Shay'isgubhu" Mathunjwa (Drums) and Menyatso "Play" Mathole (Lead Guitar) What a line-up!!! This is the CREAM OF AFRICA
Yes I remember the Rainbow in Pinetown so well. It was owned by an anti-apartheid activist called Ben (I think Pretorius?) and we had many a Sunday afternoon there, drinking Black Label beer in quart bottles. Saw so many top African bands there incl. the African Jazz Pioneers and others. What a time! Right by the Pinetown taxi rank where the average white South African would fear to venture!
I followed them all over South Africa. Got drunk with Sipho at the a Rainbow, a jazz club in Pinetown, near Durban. That's in the 80's. Only open on Sunday afternoons. Wow
Ah the memories! Went to see David Bowie in Paris in '83 & the coach driver was South African and played the backside out of this album, I had to buy it when I got back in the UK. Got a couple of their albums on vinyl but sadly no CDs despite the years of searching. You will let me know when you put your copy on ebay won't you? ;-)
cd are available bro. you might have looked at the wrong places. I bought most of them at reliable hawkers at jeppestown and some at kohinoor in the city centre
@crapcaked Don't know whether to apologize or thank you for commenting, but if you only knew how long I searched for a CD version of this after hearing it on the jazz portion of a local public radio broadcast in 1983.... And it's a bassline that should not be consigned to obscurity...
