Kathys ages like wine, Ians aged like milk.
Lmao you should have had more likes for this comment
Ian was aging okay up until 2011 or thereabouts
Ian got fat, that's why.
The actor who plays kathy obviously has had Botox because she can’t frown.
In other words, Ian's a bit of a milksop. ;)
Ian, the longest running character never to be played by another actor.
xxoxia and dot
Yes but in terms of the time he's been in the show, he is the one thats been in it the longest
Darkraider 363 yes you're right! He's the longest serving character since day 1.
At least he's still on the Show. When The Young & The Restless debuted back in 1973, it focused on the Upper Middle Class Brooks & The Blue Collar Fosters. Then when The Bold & The Beautiful debuted in 1987 it focused on the Fabulously Wealthy Forrester Fashion Designer House and The Blue Collar Logans.
Yes, that's quite an achievement but let's not forget Bill Roache (Ken Barlow) Coronation St., 1960-to the present with the exception of One Year Off. In The US it was Don Hastings who played Dr. Bob Hughes on As The World Turns from 1960-2010. Yet The Actor who played Ian was very lucky that they didn't "Recast" him. On US Soil they have SORAS. (Soap Opera Rapid Aging Syndrome). If there was A US Equivalent to Ian Beale it would be Frank Dicopoulos who played Frank Cooper on Guiding Light from 1987 until the show's Cancellation in 2009.
Ian looks so much like the old Peter
Pete Beale or Albert Beale
@@nathanchristie8881 peter obviously
Ben Hardy?
Queen obsessed weirdo nah Thomas Law his old kids actually looked like they could’ve been his but they replaced them with models
love the early episodes of eastenders
Wow. I never noticed. Young Ian looks strangely like new Bobby. They even make similar faces.
It looked more gritty back then
I think that part of the reason why people were drawn to it was the Hard Core Blue Collar Environment that a lot of folks could relate to. Also, Ian was very lucky. Adam Woodyat never got replaced as far as I know.
I loved the Back To Ours Specials. I know that it wouldn't happen but I would have loved for Ian to have talked to Jon Hensley who debuted as Holden Snyder on The US Soap OperaAs The World Turns in 1985. The Show actually debuted in 1956 and over the Years some of it's past Co-Stars have been Julianne Moore, Marisa Tomei and even Lauryn Hill in her Pre-Fugee Days.
Pub was nowhere as lavish as it began to look in 1994, Cafe was run down, etc
Eastnders was real and gritty. Now it looks too manufactured
@Marshall Carwood Its set where bow road would be
Eastenders were very smart in the sense that the Beales/Fowlers are still at the heart of the Show. That is very impressive.
I was 4 years old when David Scarboro died so I dident no him but he was such a handsome lad condolences to his Family x
It was light years better back then; the Square actually looked as though it had stood for 100 years, the dialogue was longer and there was the odd bit of camera-shake as though we really were just catching something on the fly.
Its light years ahead of the dross they produce now. But society was stronger back then, more together. today people are insecure and always looking for approval, just look at the difference in hair etc, back then the men were more on the scruffy side and weren't bothered, today they are written to be pathetic and insecure.
Stephen O'Donnell Michelle picking her nose at 0:57 seconds... talk about catching something on the fly

so realistic you can feel the cold air.
Exactly! I'm telling you I've watched my share of Blue Collar Families on US Soaps. The Woleks on One Life To Live 1968-2012, The Bradys on Days Of Our Lives 1965-Present, or even The Coopers (whose real name is Kouperakis) on Guiding Light (1937-2009) whose neighborhood 5th Street looks more like Sesame Street. Yet Albert Square is so spot on in terms of realism.
Sad about the actor who played the first Mark,RIP.
The late David Scarboro
What happened to him
Cole Duffield, the actor committed suicide in 1988 and the character was therefore recast to be played by Todd Carty between 1990 and 2003
Yes, another sad Suicide was Ben Jorgensen who played Kevin Sheffield on All My Children who hid the fact that he was Gay and played Chris Hughes on As The World Turns as well.
@@joshsheekey5512 I watched the documentary his brother made about him and the British press should have been sued for their harrassment of him, especially when he was suffering.
The acting seemed so much better back then. Just saw some on Drama.
Kathy is back in Eastenders
so's pete
The young Ian looks so much like his son Peter here.
I was really addicted to the show back then but now I can leave it. It was great without the use of mobile phones, internet etc.. more with acting the stories than technology
I enjoy seeing the first episodes of the series!
Today August 6 2018 Drama started playing Eastenders from the first one, fantastic, how things have changed, values, families.
To see the now adult actors as teens was the best.
Watch it ,they will keep them playing if there is an audience.
Love every minute of the episodes, 2 today, better writing, stories than today.
i watch them on Drama too lol
I loved when this was on pbs
Yeah, me too. I sometimes had a hard time understanding them but The Families all take turns having Storylines. The Bauers on Guiding Light went from being the "Original" Core Family to a shell of it's former self.
The smartest move that the Creators Of EastEnders did was that they never forgot to keep the Beales/Fowlers at the Center of The Show. A lot of Soaps forgot to do that. On The Young & The Restless it orginally focused on The Blue Collar Fosters and The Upper Middle Class Brooks Family now it focuses on The Abbotts & The Newmans.
I wish we could watch these old episodes in full somehow, I love seeing this bit, I wanted to watch the rest of the storyline! hah
Me too, I wonder why they aren't full episodes.
I googled full episodes of eastenders and came across this www.dailymotion.com/video/x2hf8un :)
Drama Channel
I saw these episodes on drama a couple of years ago. The conversations were more authentic and realistic to the silky scheming and talking in riddles they do today.
lol the first beale lady in the cafe really reminds me of jane she even sounds like her
Why does ian look so much like the old peter ? They arnt even related irl 😂
Lauren Wilkinson Oh yeah I see what you mean
because casting directors often try to cast actors with similar physical appearances and mannerisms who are playing related, adds to the realism. There are loads of examples-think the slater girls or in corrie with sarah lou and her daughter bethany or in emmerdale with trish and her mum steph stokes, emmerdale chas and cain, deirdre and blanch in corrie, miles and frasier on frasier, even daniella westbrook got cast for her round face similar to phil and grant -again phil and grant being an example....
because ian is peter's son, but thanks for playing
You are so right on Shane Folan. Look at The Mitchell Brothers Grant & Phil, they are not related but you could have fooled anyone. Also, Jeff Trachta (Ex-Thorne Forrester Two The Bold & The Beautiful) looked the most like Eric Forrester played by John McCook.
Big chunk of the square are related, just notice The mitchells are related to the beales which means they are related to the fowlers and the brannings.
Boy and to think that The Beales & Fowlers legacy still continues. I would love for Eastenders, Hollyoaks and Coronation Street have Characters intertwine since they will be celebrating their 35th, 25th, and 60th Anniversary next year. From dealing with Special Needs Kids, Physically Challenged Folks, Gay Folks, Lesbian Folks, or better yet have The Truemans visit The Baileys and talk about being a Black Family in The Neighborhood
Jeeze Louise! Look at Ian!
It was never the same show after poor old Reg Cox passed away....
softlystroll didn't he die day one? 😂
Yes first episode no diologue just sitting in a chair unconcious/dead
THANKS FOR THIS CLIP!! "Miss silk knickers"..."You bloody Beales"...Sue had some great lines and a fine actress. Mark was Albert Square's answer to James Dean back then. Always thought Pete's actor couldn't act for shit. Must be a ton of classic early scenes to trawl through.
I think the actress who played Sue passed away.
Dot Cotton and Mo with her dog,Rollo were my favorites when my late father n I watched back in the day
Early days getting into character acting, seems weird seeing the original longstanding cast in their first scenes.... The oldest Extenders is definitely the best!!! I stopped watching it about 15 years ago now 🤯
god they all look so young jezus
Oh my God. What have the screenwriters done to this once great show now.
!? What a vacuous comment.
@Jake Eyles I take it you’re a gammon
@UltimateLyricsUK that's Ian? OMG he was kind of adorable. Especially when compared to now
Beales and Fowlers first scene
I see the old houses in the 1980's
In walford
Would you say that The Beales are to Eastenders what The Barlows are to Coronation Street and what The Sugdens are to Emmerdale.
Yes. And what the Robinsons and Ramsays are to Neighbours
@@Hulk2k6 Very good . Thanks for telling me this. Greatly appreciated. In The US, it was The Bauers on Guiding Light, The Hortons on Days Of Our Lives, The Hughes On As The World Turns.
@@Hulk2k6 I live in Canada so we don't get those shows.
This is now on Drama channel (143) from 12pm.
Lol actual mugs
I'm not talking about the show, i'm talking about the 80s... I'm glad i wasn't around to experience the grimness of the 80s
And that's not even possible
Happy 35th birthday EE!
They killed kathy off 2 do the Phil bonding wif Ben storyline
@TekkenDude08 he really does I agree.
oh yeah, so he did. It just sounded a little different, considering how quiet Mark's voice was
The very last days of the real East End, now sadly gone forever & a whole rich culture totally destroyed.
What? That was just the beginning...
He means this was just before "multiculturalism" was forced upon the nation through illegal wars abroad. this was the generation that needed to stand up to the government, not just the few that did stand up but the whole nation needed to get it stopped,, the few that did just got their heads kicked in. But yeah my grandad lived in London for about 2 years in the late 70s and said it was a great place to live, being from up north he took some stick but said it was a great environment.
@Brythonic Man @TheRebel But what, the brown and black people have made it dump now have they?
Doesn't matter where you go, a racist bigot always pops up. Two in this case.
@@SB-sg4em *"But what, the brown and black people have made it dump now have they? "* Ohhh I see, so migrants are only black and brown, are they? Tut tut, such racial profiling will not be tolerated, you disgusting racist bigot.
The East End was a multiculture in 1985. Even within this clip. Did the mixed couple running the caff pass you by?
Julia Smith, the producer, argued with the head of the wardrobe department, who had visited the East End to seek inspiration for the characters' clothes when the show was in preparation in 1984. The head of the wardrobe department had found that the real 1980s East Enders were wearing very flash, bright clothes - in fitting with the styles of the decade, but Julia wanted her characters to look grim. After she retired, she told the head of the wardrobe department that she (the wardrobe head) had been right about the clothes! Despite Julia saying that she wanted the show to be set 'uncompromisingly in the '80s' the real life outfits of East Enders were far too bright and expensive for the anti-Thatcher vision the show wanted to portray. It had an agenda. In 1987, several newspapers challenged the show's view of the East End. One published an article about residents of a real-life East End square - who were all financially and emotionally happier than the Queen Vic gang.
kathy beale is in hollyoaks now.
shes in eastenders now, didnt think id say that again lol
She was on The Bill for a bit as well
I love how UK Actors do various projects from other Soaps The Bill, and the like. Sometimes when you play a character so long you want to spread your wings so to speak and play someone different.
This isn't the first appearance of the Beales
Yes it is, it was the first episode of the show (Febuary 19, 1985)
Cool!
What year did they arrive
Maan the 80's looked grim....
They should’ve got Todd Carty to play Mark from the start
Nah. He was too old to play the character and the original guy was better looking.
Omg ian beale
Omg amir khan
lol
That's because it was.
Ahhh look at the Caf
I'm still fairly new in terms of recognizing characters. This is Michelle & Ian who are Siblings and Mark is their Cousin. I think that the Recasting of Mark Fowler was one of the best ones. When they "Recast" an Actor and the fans don't like them, they are very "Vocal" to say the very least.
Close. Mark and Michelle are siblings and Ian is their cousin.
When the character of Mark was recast (due to the tragic death of the original actor playing the role), the character also underwent a change.
Mark went from being a rebellious teenager with a surly attitude and criminal tendencies to a young man who had experienced some setbacks in his life which changed his outlook on things.
@@woohooboy Thanks for setting the Record Straight. Man what's going in now with The Girls is a mess. Tiffany hanging bad with Evie and getting a very bad comeuppance. I didn't watch EastEnders back in the day because it wasn't broadcasted where I am in Canada but now it is thanks to a Network called Vision. It shows UK Shows but the only Drawback is that we are at least Two Months Behind. I also had no idea that Bianca & Sonia Fowler are Sisters. Don't you notice that Albert Square has had a reputation for having a lot of Troubled Teenage Girls.
The folks who watch Eastenders on a UK Station called WETA are so upset that they can't watch The Show anymore due to budgeting constraints. It was very popular in Detroit.
Britbox (US) carries Eastenders. Episodes are uploaded the same day as they are broadcast in UK.
eastenders has always managed to stay the same. there's kathy always being kathy.
ON The US Soap Opera Guiding Light, there was a 5th Street similar to Albert Square but it wasn't as gritty. You could put the Cooper Family in The Square and they would feel right at home because they also have been known to run Cafes/Diners and the like.
Kathy will always be so beautiful
1:01 BOBS
What happened to the old mark?
The actor killed himself
The actor who played him (David Scarboro)didn't like that the writers wanted to turn his character into a racist. He got fired for it. The press published untrue stories about private life. He later killed himself in 1988.
Which one is Ian
0:58 Left One
"uncle"
didn't that actor that played mark jump off beachy head?
Yes i think he did so sad.
No, he committed suicide.
That is suicide jumping off a cliff
Did Mark just call Pete 'aunty Paul' when he asked for the apple?
Uncle Pete
@@xenocloudyt I guess I didn't hear him properly
Johnno9989 oof didn’t expect you to reply 7 years later lol
reruns are on drama
And to think The Cafe would be Kathy's Livelihood. I think that Eastenders had more "Indian" Families than even Coronation Street.
.
.
NO Kathy is the longest running character
Berry Bunny no Ian is, because he never left. Kathy did leave.
Kathy left for around 18 years.
@@petermasefield8403 16 years, from 1999 to 2015. As mentioned in another comment above, Ian is the longest running male character and Tracey the barmaid is the longest running female character. Both characters have been there since the first episode and are still there to this day.
I feel sorry for ever ended up with Ian in real life he was hot younger haha!
*_100TH LIKE!!!_*
They should get rid of all them thats there now and bring back all then that was - them wots still alive that is - thats what the show needs now - i would start watching it again for sure
Michelle, Mark and Ian look so weird, and I watch 1993 eastenders
For me Eastenders was decent until about 2006. I thought the original Slaters run 2000-2006 was decent and picked the show up and I liked the early years. But I lost interest in the late 00's to be honest. I occasionally watch it now but I miss alot of the old characters and the way the set used to look.
I think that is about the last time I watched it, literally.
lol. Glad I wasn't around in the 80s.
The square looks so trampy
That was the whole point. It was hard core and blue collar. The closest Blue Collar Neighborhood was 5th Street on Guiding Light in The US yet it wasn't as gritty as Albert Square.
but this is what East London was like back in the late 70s early 80s
Funny a woman telling a man he wants to control his missis!
Should have ended with this episode and it should be illegal to even mention this garbage.
That was a waste of viewing!
Love Kathy ax
