blessings to you for this video! be very careful with acetone. it can absorb through the skin and cause problems over time to your body. my husband uses at work and has seen it dissolve materials.
Hi Tommy, Nice information in here! I think the surface preparation prior to heat treating is another important variable to consider . Sandblasting, acid washing, etc. all may affect the instruments response to the application of oil... On instruments that can't take oil, isopropyl alcohol can help prevent rust by removing sweat and salts. I agree that the Acetone can be a good degreaser to remove excess oil and restore some sound. I like the acetone bath idea, but have not tried it.
Not always Sandblasting or polishing the surface is enough... depend how deep is the layer... so depend by hours and degrees of the treatment... ;-) Thanks to appreciate!
No, I do not mean that those are 'treatments' for the oil problem... Rather, surface preparation (before heat treatment) by individual makers or heat treatment facilities can sometimes be a probable cause of the issue you describe. If makers experience the problem with oil I would suggest to them to understand the process in place at their heat treatment facility.
Hey Tommy, thanks for the informative video 😁 I've used froglube before and it did actually dampen the sound after a couple of years, and left much sticky residue. I did this acetone bath, and then a white spots appeared on the surface and is pretty hard to remove with acetone. Do you have any idea how I can wipe them off?!
Very informative, grazie. 3 things. 1) Your English is good. But too far from microphone, sound quality was poor :( 2) With acetone, how frequently do you clean? 1 time per month? 3) Kabecao has a review on phoenix oil - made for handpans. Do you know if that product is good? (or if it cause same problem as other oils - going inside metal) thanks again for the vid!
Hi Traets, thanks to write, but i must to be clear once again... this "cleaning treatment" has to be done ONLY on handpans that had problems of sustain killed after using an OIL product. So you will do it once, than you will never use any Oil product again.
Thanks for sharing Tommy! I have great respect for your work, knowledge and humble approach. No more oil for my handpan.🙏🏻
Thanks Andreas!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience about those issues Tommy. 😊👍
Thanks for sharing! Your instruments and knowledge always impress me!

Its just sad that someone wants to help and its not recognized... its even criticized somehow.
I know women use it for fingernails. very very bad for them too.
