This movie was made with a poor budget of 10,000 bucks, but it actually looks like a 50 million dollar action movie directed by Takashi Miike, John Woo or Corey Yuen or that famous hongkonese filmmakers. It's so hilarious for me. And the guy with the blood in the face, it's simply amazing! He looks gorgeous with that black jacket and that brown-colored pupils. Azumi, The Midnight Meat Train, No One Lives, Downrange, Godzilla: Final Wars, Aragami, Sky High, Alive, and this movie Versus. This man, Kitamura, is a genius! (Some people's gonna say that The Midnight Meat Train is a shit, but i don't give a fuck what people say, that POV scene was well executed).
One of the best action scenes filmed in the last 20 + years. Probably one of the best scenes Kitamura ever directed in terms of style, characters, cinematography, and choreography. Having two great indie actors portraying characters to the exact level of need also makes the scene have such dynamic impact. And this flick first popped out - before the extra scenes were shot later - at the time of the Matrix making everyone drop their jaws in the West thanks to Yuen Woo Ping.
It's a shame they didn't film it. I mean intentionally shaking the camera for no reason, you can't see a thing. They could be standing in place and klinging the swords lightly and the cameraman shaking camera around and it would not matter. Worst shaky camera ever seen in my life. Time to declare war on shaky cameras for fuck sake.

@@eufrosniad994 Well in my honest opinion, the only moment that was really hard to follow was from 1:30 to 2:00, which indeed has poor camera work and alot of frenetic cuts, but after that, i think the fight is somewhat well filmed and quite easy to follow (with the exception of the "air fight" sequence) But maybe that's just me.

Me neither! I was lucky enough to catch this on Starz at nearly 3 am. I only managed to see it one more time. 2 other Asian films that also left impressions on me was 'Returners' & 'Ong Bak'. All 3 aired between 1am-4am, for some reason. I've never managed to track them down since early '00's.

It's amazing how dangerous this fight scene was to film. They filmed it at full speed, swinging heavy (albeit blunted) swords at each other at full strength. It was harder for Tak (the one in the trench coat) because one of his eyes was covered and the other one had a coloured contact lens in, giving him a very narrow field of vision for which to detect incoming sword strikes.

I am feeling some intense DMC-Vibes in this Movie cause i saw this flick Hand in Hand with my first playtrough of DMC1 on the PS2. The aesthetic is similar and i fell totally in Love with for this piece Till now
I never understood the ending until now even after 16 years watching the movie. The forest of resurrection reincarnates people's soul into their fated roles. The protagonist died here in the final battle so he restricted as the evil opposite. The Bad guy died too and was resurrected as the good guy so the ending makes sense when they reverse their roles. The 666 gates are points of resurrection for all souls and place them into their fated roles they must play in an endless cycle of battle between Yin and Yang; good and evil.
The extra fight sequences shot over a year later were totally n0t necessary in my view. I remember seeing this film on bootleg DVD’s and imports at Asian video stores many years ago and just freaking loving it. Never forget that old white plastic DVD case!!
The cut scenes in DMC3 were choreographed by Yudai Yamaguchi he choreographed Versus too :) he also directed battlefield baseball, a pretty interesting film!

Imma cry aparenty the script of versus 2 which never happened showed sakaki as the hero this time whos realized his mistakes hunting down sakaguchi who is now the villain that sold out and destroyed everyone and everything and in the end sakakis character destroys sakaguchi gets the girl. And remember prior to this it is 1-1 tie and sakaki would would break the rubber match as a hero
Also he'd injured himself several times in the fight scenes before this one, chipping his tooth whilst cocking a gun and hurting his ribs falling down a hill

If you have seen the movie, at the end you will find out who was really the bad guy.... I loved this film, and mostly that plot twist at the ending. "There´s nothing left to destroy"
Nah, Dante was modelled along the lines of Alucard from Hellsing and Vash from Trigun. The author of Hellsing even tried to sue Capcom over it and the author from Trigun told him it he could sue Capcom for Dante, then he could sue him for modelling Alucard after Vash. I don't think a lawsuit ever happened.

And like I said Dante and the Versus guy fight in a similar way with a combination of guns and a sword. Vash is hardly fighting at all. Mostly reacting to others trying to fight him. Vash and Alucard have red coats but other than that nothing in common with Dante. This versus guy looks like a asian version of him just totally in black instead of white hair and red coat. Even a similar hair cut.

Its called 'The Fate' by Nobuhiko Morino. That moment where he returns the blade, the exhale with the cracking of his vocal chords then the sharp inhale after (or vice versa). I've only been able to do it once and can't for the life of me learn how I did it that one time. Truly beautiful cinematography and that song coming in as it does never fails to level me.
