  • The picture that revealed the brilliant actor Leonid Bykov to the world, it became one of his first appearances on the screen, in full film. A Ukrainian artistic melodrama about village life in the post-war years, the film, which became one of the last examples of “Stalinist cinema”, shot in the spirit of socialist realism, became the end of an era and the beginning of a career, both for many of its creators and actors.
The plot takes place in Ukraine, in the village of Lebedinki. Marina Vlasenko is awaiting the return of her husband, Terenty Vlasenko, who went to study at the Kiev Agricultural Institute. But when he returns home, Marina does not remain happy for long. Immediately after the trip, her husband demands a divorce from her. He motivates this by the fact that now she is stupid for him, because she has no education, and he is an educated person. Marina remains on her own, raises her daughter and delves into her studies; she has great success in her work. As a result, she was soon awarded the honorary title of Hero of Socialist Labor.

And with this film she visited the Cannes Film Festival and made a splash there, outstripping Gina Lollobrigida herself in the number of autographs.
In 1954, the film received a nomination for the Grand Prix at the 7th Cannes International Film Festival (Cannes, France).
