John Lee Hooker "grave" is located in Oakland Ca at the Home of Eternity Mausoleum. The Cemetery and Mausoleum is worth a trip if you are in Oakland CA for some reason.
I watched this film a week ago with this scene included in total. now watching it screening on late night tv, this scene in its entirety GONE. Elwood and Jake just appear in Charles music store. shame because I absolutely love boom boom & john lee hooker!
@@hypnotised-clover Yes for time; and so they don't have to pay a royalty for John Lee's "Boom Boom" and Aretha Franklin's "Think" that they both sing.
John Landis once said Muddy Waters was meant to share this scene with John Lee Hooker and both of em were supposed to fight over who wrote it at the end. That's why the band is mainly Muddy's band (Big Eye Smith, Pinetop Perkins, Luther Johnson Jr and Calvin Fuzz Jones, plus the one and only Shakey Horton). Unfortunately, Muddy got the flu the day this had to be shot. Landis and Aykroyd asked the production to postpone the filming to get Muddy but the production turned it down as the budget was skyrocketing and as the didn't believe blues singers would make it a blockbuster.
This entire scene was definitely in the movie when I saw it in the theater the day after it opened. I remember damn near jumping out of my seat when those first few chords played over the shot of the license plate, because I knew immediately that it was my old Detroit neighbor John Lee Hooker! However, I think this scene has been cut out of most prints shown on TV for years. That version just went straight into the Aretha Franklin/Matt Murphy diner scene. But I've seen Hooker's scne or parts of it restored in more recent TV versions.
First place I visited in Chicago after I Graduated from United States Navy Bootcamp at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes Ill in 1983 was The Cheat you fair on Maxwell Street. Talk about great memories.
This movie got me into blues in the first place. I have so much love for it. Cannot watch this scene enough, it's electrifying. Years later I learned to play blues harp - not that well, but enough to hold my own in a Chicago-style blues band I was in for a couple of years in Sydney. Wish I could get just one tenth of one percent of the tone that Big Walter Horton had like the harp he played in this clip
Old Maxwell St. Market, now is mostly fancy clubs, bars, lofts and UIC dorms in the area. Luckily that hot dog stand at 0:38 still is there after 90 years. It is my favorite place to eat in the city.
Since i was 8 years old, this performance has meant something to me. There is not a still in this deleted scene that isn't a great picture. So many people came together to blow a budget, not make a profit at the cinema, and leave behind a classic movie. So it goes.
My # One blues man. You Turned me on with Hooker n Heat album, when I was just a 13 year old school girl! At 67 I Thank for a Life long soundtrack John! Rest in Peace and Love thank for schooling me Johnny! 🕊💞🎸🎶💃🏻💫🙏🏻
John Lee Hooker!!!! This man had and always will have more soul in his voice and fingers than most will ever hear or comprehend. He’s a huge part of the soundtrack of my life. Luvs me some John Lee Hooker!!!!
Look for an old copy on VHS . Then look for an old VCR thats the machine that plays the VHS tape . Then look for a CRT T.V. that's a cathode ray tube television that you use to watch the VHS tape played by the VCR . You do all that and you can watch the whole scene the way Dan Akroid wanted it to be seen . Was the movie really made that long ago ?
Just watched a screening of an original 35mm print last night, and that sounds about right. That original release has this in an extremely condensed form, with just a few clips preserved (the zebras, etc)
Does anyone know why they argue at the end? Initially I thought it was unclear who wrote the song first. As far as I know, there are a lot of blues songs whose origin is so back in time that you can't just pick one author. But for boom boom I only find JLH as true and only one author...
Technically the guy complaining about John Lee being wrong is kinda accurate for the wrong reason since the original Boom Boom wasn't recorded in the 50's but in 1961.
This is the only one of the “deleted “ clips that really should have stayed. All the other ones are better off out. Ellwood’s last day at work makes sense to leave in too
Yes, it was in the movie the night it debuted at the theater. I named off every bluesman as he appeared on the screen, and a young black girl in front of me turned around and said, "You know all them names?" All I could say was YES.
As a native chicagoan I was a little confused as to why parts of this scene were in the film, but I figure for non-chicagoans, a what I'd say is regular chicagos streets might not seem so regular
Why in the world would this be deleted? Perhaps it existed in the original film, but is chopped out for the versions for TV, with fixed time slots. Either way, it's a crime.
They go into the soul food diner to get Matt guitar Murphy and Blue Lou the saxaphone player but they have to get the O.K. of Matt's wife that happens to be Aretha Franklin . She does a whole song and dance routine to her song , you better think . Dan Akroid is so far beyond smart it's unreal .
Original cut was 3 hours - most of the cuts were destroyed by the studio, but 18 minutes were restored to the 25th anniversary DVD, including this scene. Only part of this one is in the original theatrical release.
this is in the movie, just not the whole scene, shame really, I guess they have there reasons for deleting some of it, probably a time thing, or a mood shift to slow maybe, who knows, either way John lee hooker is still in the movie, the Blues Brothers is one of my all time favorites,
It's pretty clear to me: sadly Bernie Sanders will be bought out by establishment DNC pressure to drop out of the race to pave the way for Biden. When and highly likely given the nomination, the DNC is gonna firmly "suggest" that he put Hillary on the ticket. If that ticket were to succeed and win the election (God forbid!), then the 25th amendment will be invoked in order to elevate Hillary to the presidency
RIP John Lee Hooker. We still love you.

2:25. Two men with a love of blues music watching blues legends perform. Genuine smiles from both men. I love this scene.

hypebreaker So they cut out the whole diner scene too?
i must have an older copy this is included
Wow...that's crazy ..I have a VHS copy some where and this scene was in it

that was deleted scene?!? were they insane! (stupid question). that is one of the best parts of the movie!
they must have cut it for tv time the dvd has it
The last couple of seconds with the argument might have been deleted
I’m pretty sure it’s usually heavily edited. I remember the scene but not in full like this

I saw it in the theater summer of 1980 and the segment was only the first part of the song. It was a long movie for its day. Shame it was cut.
I always found it funny how the most famous Detroid bluesman is here representing the music of Chicago.

when i first saw it 40 years ago it was 2 hours 13 mins. long, Later when I got the directors cut it 2.5 hours long which i did not saw originally.
I saw The Blues Brothers Play Live at The Palladium in NYC I was 15!
So basically this is the extended version cause I’ve seen this scene in some variation in every showing. Just magic even as a kid loved it.
"No you didn't!!!" Lol
Now millenials this is culture...
As a millennial I agree with your statement
This isn’t in the theatrical release?? Could have sworn I saw this scene. Is it just slightly extended?
One of Physicians Ed Teacher Harold invited John Lee Hooker In Ninety Six High School at Madison HIGHSCHOOL.

it was a street that got torn down and UIC expanded their campus
Maxwell Street.....before the ‘renovations’ took place.....

Jake and elwood respectfully enjoying some great blues from a great musician.

put this scene on starz on tv with the blues brothers

Hi great movie
Not deleted but trimmed

I think this scene was in the TV version we recorded on to vhs
Not a deleted scene. It's just edited a little shorter

Real American music. Nothing like it
I believe the original director’s cut was over 2 hours long and the studio made them trim 20 minutes to shorten the film.
