Does it really matter whether the cheat is obvious or subtle? Honestly I'd much rather face a rage hacker in my games, because then there's no doubt; but I encountered a subtle cheater once (only once that I'm sure of) a couple weeks ago, and ever since then I've been absolutely paranoid, scrutinizing the kill cams and replays every time I get diffed. Had to force myself to kind of forget that cheaters exist, just for the sake of my own mental health. BTW, another benefit of ban waves that I wasn't aware of: all those dissatisfied customers issuing chargebacks to the cheat providers at the same time. You really wanna stack em up to make sure the cheat makers have a really bad time.
also, if there's enough time between the cheaters buying the cheats and them getting banned, then the refund window may have passed. There's gotta be some cheat providers with money-back guarantees.

Unfortunately as useful as it is. When cheating is this prevalent. More needs to be done to address it so players know you haven't abandoned even trying to stop cheaters. Especially since if the method blizzard detects is found and patched in a week. That's 3 months of frustration for absolutely nothing. That would kill games better than overwatch

Well, the reason for ban waves isnt necessarily to just get rid of a cheater, but to make it harder for the developer of the cheats to write a fix. For example, if i told you that you could use cheats and only doing a sepcific thing would set off the alarms for the anticheat, if i banned you immediately after you activated that one thing, lets say spin botting, then the developer would know "ok, for some reason the system can detect spin botting, so now i need to test some code and find a way around it." Now, if you di the same thing, but instead let them go through multiple games, winning and losing using all sorts of different programs, and then banned them a little later, they wouldnt know for sure what set it off, so theyd have to test everything and figure out what went wrong that way. I do think it would be insteresting to see what would happen if they just made the anticheats hyper aggressive and instaban anyone using anything that flagged the system like it does these cheats, bdcsuse these people do eventually get banned, so the system knows. The problem is thst an instaban is also instant feedback for the devs of these cheats, and if i was a dev for cheats like these, id want to know what triggered the ban right away. Sorry, this is a lot. This was how ban waves were explained to me by a security specialist, although it could be different for a bunch of other games of course
Your understanding is spot on. They used to ban immediately (as soon as they could detect on that garbo anti-cheat at least) way back in the old days when patching was way harder to do and slower. Nowadays I’d argue they’d just be better off putting cheaters in low-prio queues and bot games subtly, thrn banning them after a bit in order to protect game integrity and slow cheat development. But also XIM’s are extremely difficult to detect so… idk
But when the detection could be as simple as, flag a player with over 95% accuracy at the end of a match for review... that would not give any information to the cheat creators. Even moreso when there is actual recording of them spinbotting. Individual bans for that kind of cheating would give literally zero information to cheat developers.

The definition of 'rage-hacking' is not as clear cut as it may seem. What is the threshold? When is it rage-hacking and when is it subtle enough to not be? What percentage of accuracy is high enough that it counts as rage-hacking? The problem with them banning immediately at a certain threshold, is it can give cheaters the information they need to know what the 'limit' is in game. You don't want them to know the detection limit, or they can much more easily work around it and create subtler cheats that are way harder to detect. It's not a perfect solution, especially with things like SR loss, but people aren't auto-banned for a reason. What Blizzard really needs to do, is a retroactive SR neutralization system when the player you've matched against or with previously has been banned for cheating. Like when a cop is investigated for corruption by Internal Affairs. All of their previous cases are put into question. When someone is banned for cheating, all of their previous comp games should be put into question in the same way. Obviously, going through on a game by game basis with each cheater would be unfeasible. But a blanket SR reset would be easier to implement.
There has to be some kind of stat based detection. However, since they allow smurfing (unlike other games), a smurfs first few matches would most like trigger a ban. Please don't block out the cheaters name, it can be helpful for others that watch these videos report sus play from the same person, and contribute to reports actually banning this person.
many games use stat based detection . if players have a certain kd or above they will auto flag them for manual review . im pretty sure no games allow smurfs in their terms of service the issue is this rule is never enforced its not just blizzard games . valorant league of legends apex and rainbow six siege just to name a few dont enforce their no smurfing policy . i think smurfing is pathetic and u wont grow as a player by beating up on low players but companies would rather not enforce the no smurfing policy to inflate their total active players and sell more skins
I was thinking the same thing... if someone has 90-100% weapon accuracy after dealing a certain amount of damage that should be detected as cheating (because only rage hacks can maintain that accuracy consistently)
The biggest issue with an anticheat that detects on a flame to game basis is that at higher level of games you will always have people that will set the anticheat off and could get banned but they should look into reports more
The reason is cos if u ban them stright away via auto detect they keep making subtle changes till it doesnt auto ban but I think there has to be a system where if like 5 players report u then u get kicked or something and make it so if u abuse the system to get people kicked u get a ban.

That's my understanding of how Captcha works. It tracks mouse movement, not just clicking the right pictures. A program will most likely just move the cursor in a pixel perfect straight line at a constant speed, as where a human will have small inconsistencies in the path and speed.
It unfortunately can't be based on only speed or anything like that; it'd almost certainly have to use machine learning. Reason being that there are viable reasons for someone to crank their dpi in an FPS. But you're right, they could probably do it if they spent time training an AI to spot it. Most likely after the game finishes though.
My assumption is ppl who cheat in qp are the same people who are scared of ranked and loosing sr so they gotta go into qp so they can practice using cheats because even with the cheats they still worried they gonna loose sr
if "the cheaters will always come back anyway", why wait so long in between ban waves? might as well just do it more frequently if you think they will all come back anyway. imo they (the suits) dont want to hire the appropriate amount of positions to maintain the anticheat/ban review system and so the dev team has to "get to it when they can" (this is beneficial to the excuse because its seemingly at "random" intervals to "throw off" cheat devs, and also maybe explains why chat/vc/name reports catch instant bans (they just set the system to auto the last time they had time to do a ban wave))

Whoever said there's no such system that detect cheats couldn't be farther from the truth lmfao.. They obviously don't know what they're talking about. Kernel level anti-cheats do detect cheats. It just depends on the developer. In Blizzard's case, they are intentionally not banning cheaters live because they focus more on ban waves, because they're under the impression that they'll stay ahead of the cheaters by doing ban waves once per year, but they're wrong, because the longer they let cheats stay in circulation, the more time the cheat devs have to fine tune and further develop their cheats and when we're talking about cheat developers, well.. They get their leaks from inside sources working at Blizzard. It's really that simple and that's why they tend to be able to stay far ahead of them. Some cheat devs even work for game studios, because the cheating industry is such a massive industry and they earn almost, i'd say the same if not more than they earn from their game dev jobs. Usually it's a low rank employee. Once Blizzard finds out whoever is feeding the cheat developers the leaked codes or whoever on their team is making cheats themselves to sell, it's easier to stay on top of it. Not ahead but on top of it, because that means that there is no more inside sources to get codes from, which makes it much harder for the cheat devs to stay so far ahead of the game devs and the anti-cheat. This is how it's been done since i worked with Evenbalance and their anti-cheat Punkbuster way back in the day. It's just gotten worse over the years..
Kinda off topic, but i was reading the livestream chat and some dude said that they didnt want kernel level anticheats like in league. I didn't know what that was so i did my investigation and fuuuuuuuuuck, I also don't want that at all. Riot's Vanguard sounds pretty fucked up
4:36 not 100% if it is the same style of anticheat however the anticheat I am familiar with will detect the things which go into the ban wave and records the information however it cannot determine the exact severity of the cheat. Example a person who Xrays in minecraft gets a lot of diamonds the anticheat will display how many diamonds and record the information however it doesnt have the ability to say well this person is cheating but only collected 10 stacks so I will just record the information but if they get 10 stacks and 1 more then it can ban them. When the anticheat is "on vacation" it is less that the anticheat inst working but the actual humans. Sure some cases a cheater will be immediately banned; those cases include and are typically limited to either the cheat software messes up a check somewhere along the way alerting the anticheat or people draw attention to the person using reports. At least the anti cheat I am familiar with puts a higher priority to banning chaters who would be on the list if enough people are recognizing and reporting it to the system. This is done on what I call a problem scale if a person is cheating their name goes on the list however if no one reports the cheater then their cheating must not rise to the point of being a problem. If one or two report over a good breath of time it also keeps the problem rating low because it is rare for them to effect others with their cheats; I.E. they suck and can only hard feed even with cheats, the type to make bronze 5 look like masters. The cheaters who cheat to face the cheaters who cheat the game. Many reasons to be lower ban priority and be lower on the problem rating. However on the opposite side of the coin if multiple people reported a player for cheating and the system has already determined they were their problem rating goes up. At certain thresholds it can lead to the anticheat banning the account before the ban wave. Going back to the minecraft analogy it would be like one person xraying to find diamonds while another person is walking around with kill aura attacking everyone. While both are cheating one effects others enjoyment of the game much more than the other. This was all speculation based on knowledge of systems I routinly work with in a different field and I do not know specifically if the blizzard anticheat works in the same way.
TL:DR anti cheat cannot determine between rage hacking and stealth hacking to it, it is the same. Players reports give weight to the severity if it is like the ones I had worked with.
Here is the thing right, i wouldnt end up typing to defend myself if i was hacking. I would keep playing reguardless, and i would also cut back a little. i am already winning in the cheater's position. i wouldnt make accusations either. what has to be done is just keep playing. if your team stopped playing and you lose, you can report for game play sabotage, or throwing the game when you already made such huge progress already, practically winning the game out the gate.

The better solution for dealing with cheater before a ban wave is putting them in only cheaters lobbies or severely impair their gameplay. X-Defiant for example locks speed hackers in place, so they cant move anywhere.
If you do that the problem is that there are replay code of the game, so people would say "EveRyonE oN oVeRwATch" and them more people cheat, they can do that on Valorant because they conveniently never have implemented replay, they would need to remove replay code in OW in order to do that

Blocking out a cheaters name is like censoring a wanted poster of a thief or a murderer. These people are criminals so they lose the right to privacy.

My assumption is ppl who cheat in qp are the same people who are scared of ranked and loosing sr so they gotta go into qp so they can practice using cheats because even with the cheats they still worried they gonna loose sr
if "the cheaters will always come back anyway", why wait so long in between ban waves? might as well just do it more frequently if you think they will all come back anyway.
imo they (the suits) dont want to hire the appropriate amount of positions to maintain the anticheat/ban review system and so the dev team has to "get to it when they can" (this is beneficial to the excuse because its seemingly at "random" intervals to "throw off" cheat devs, and also maybe explains why chat/vc/name reports catch instant bans (they just set the system to auto the last time they had time to do a ban wave))

We just had a Zen cheater. It was really weird and quick play tracking through walls every shot hitting perfect headshots... I hated it
I also dont understand why there isnt a system that catches blatant hacking... if a character spins 90 degrees in 0.001s and hit consistent headshots - I think they might be sus :D
Just wondering if there would be value in a voting system where you need at least for example 6 votes to stop a match because of a cheater. And then nobody loses progress. But you'll need votes from both teams.
At least three votes from either team would be awesome.

Kernel level anti-cheats do detect cheats. It just depends on the developer. In Blizzard's case, they are intentionally not banning cheaters live because they focus more on ban waves, because they're under the impression that they'll stay ahead of the cheaters by doing ban waves once per year, but they're wrong, because the longer they let cheats stay in circulation, the more time the cheat devs have to fine tune and further develop their cheats and when we're talking about cheat developers, well.. They get their leaks from inside sources working at Blizzard. It's really that simple and that's why they tend to be able to stay far ahead of them. Some cheat devs even work for game studios, because the cheating industry is such a massive industry and they earn almost, i'd say the same if not more than they earn from their game dev jobs. Usually it's a low rank employee.
Once Blizzard finds out whoever is feeding the cheat developers the leaked codes or whoever on their team is making cheats themselves to sell, it's easier to stay on top of it. Not ahead but on top of it, because that means that there is no more inside sources to get codes from, which makes it much harder for the cheat devs to stay so far ahead of the game devs and the anti-cheat.
This is how it's been done since i worked with Evenbalance and their anti-cheat Punkbuster way back in the day. It's just gotten worse over the years..

4:36 not 100% if it is the same style of anticheat however the anticheat I am familiar with will detect the things which go into the ban wave and records the information however it cannot determine the exact severity of the cheat. Example a person who Xrays in minecraft gets a lot of diamonds the anticheat will display how many diamonds and record the information however it doesnt have the ability to say well this person is cheating but only collected 10 stacks so I will just record the information but if they get 10 stacks and 1 more then it can ban them. When the anticheat is "on vacation" it is less that the anticheat inst working but the actual humans. Sure some cases a cheater will be immediately banned; those cases include and are typically limited to either the cheat software messes up a check somewhere along the way alerting the anticheat or people draw attention to the person using reports.
At least the anti cheat I am familiar with puts a higher priority to banning chaters who would be on the list if enough people are recognizing and reporting it to the system. This is done on what I call a problem scale if a person is cheating their name goes on the list however if no one reports the cheater then their cheating must not rise to the point of being a problem. If one or two report over a good breath of time it also keeps the problem rating low because it is rare for them to effect others with their cheats; I.E. they suck and can only hard feed even with cheats, the type to make bronze 5 look like masters. The cheaters who cheat to face the cheaters who cheat the game. Many reasons to be lower ban priority and be lower on the problem rating. However on the opposite side of the coin if multiple people reported a player for cheating and the system has already determined they were their problem rating goes up. At certain thresholds it can lead to the anticheat banning the account before the ban wave. Going back to the minecraft analogy it would be like one person xraying to find diamonds while another person is walking around with kill aura attacking everyone. While both are cheating one effects others enjoyment of the game much more than the other.
This was all speculation based on knowledge of systems I routinly work with in a different field and I do not know specifically if the blizzard anticheat works in the same way.
TL:DR anti cheat cannot determine between rage hacking and stealth hacking to it, it is the same. Players reports give weight to the severity if it is like the ones I had worked with.

Here is the thing right, i wouldnt end up typing to defend myself if i was hacking. I would keep playing reguardless, and i would also cut back a little. i am already winning in the cheater's position. i wouldnt make accusations either. what has to be done is just keep playing. if your team stopped playing and you lose, you can report for game play sabotage, or throwing the game when you already made such huge progress already, practically winning the game out the gate.

A wrecking ball aimbot is a fast as fuck boi aimbot turret that can find and reach you anywhere. On a good ball player they'd shred the lobby. Also he does absolutely not know how to play ball. He has the game sense and movement of a potato.

The better solution for dealing with cheater before a ban wave is putting them in only cheaters lobbies or severely impair their gameplay. X-Defiant for example locks speed hackers in place, so they cant move anywhere.
If you do that the problem is that there are replay code of the game, so people would say "EveRyonE oN oVeRwATch" and them more people cheat, they can do that on Valorant because they conveniently never have implemented replay, they would need to remove replay code in OW in order to do that

Silver ball here. those mechanics were SOOO mid. The spot where he loses fireball on the first high ground was painful. It does happen to the best of us. But there are rarely swoop and boop slams. You NEED aim on ball but like. Use an ability, my guy.
