  • My name is Mårten and this is my journey into photographing the stars and deep sky objects. In this video I take you through the process of checking the backlash on the SkyWatcher HEQ5 Pro equatorial mount. I will also show you how to easily adjust the worm drive carrier position to minimize the backlash on both the DEC and RA axis.

    I've had my HEQ5 Pro for many years and now it needs a tune up. Thank you for the very clear instructions.

    Thanks a lot to you and astrobaby's guidance on this issue. Had some really bad backlash in RA which ended up ruining the first sub after doing a dither like 50% of the time. At this point I had to have some crazy long settle times, like 2 mins or something like that to get around it. Finally had some time to spare and removed the backlash and got it regreased. Haven't had clear skyes to try it out yet, but it sounds really nice + no gear grinding anymore at least.
    Cheers from Norway💫

    Thanks for the video, showed me exactly what I needed to know. My mount is only a month old and the ra backlash needs adjustment after the gears have bedded in.

    I would like to thank the author of this video (I am speaking generically because it was a list of videos that led me to this result) for his work and for having helped me to greatly improve my HEQ5 setup. Previously it drove with about 3.0" RMS and could barely capture anything. Combined with the terrible seeing here and the brightness of the city (Bortle 8), I kept trying for 6 years and almost gave up astrophotography. Well, I tried to make a last effort and cleaned and lubricated the HEQ5, installed Rowan's belt kit and changed the Hypertune's bearings. In the last few days I had open skies and was able to test the results. The HEQ5 is incredibly accurate, averaging 0.4" RMS and easily holding 0.3" RMS if you have a good guiding star (the seeing here is still very bad). Yesterday I managed to reach 0.28" RMS with a wind of about 5 to 10 km / h capturing the nebula of the lagoon (Messier 8). I am very happy and will continue strong and steady in search of new catches. If you also have the same problems I have, believe that they can be solved.

    thanks for the tutorial, just bought this awesome mount.
    Btw that beat drop at 12:12 made me move my head while making the adjustments 😄

      I have a noise on Dec axis, that I can't get rid of, I have no backlash, I don't think I have biding...would you mind watch a video of it and tell me what you think about it?

    Hi Marten, Thank you for that video. I have been having a bad guiding since a few months I could notice I have a backlash on RA, I used your tuto to reduce it, it worked, but I had a strange noise in the engine when I rotate 360° so I adjusted again I have no noise now but still backlash, I can’t get no backlash and no noise , I unscrewed the lower screw and I screwed the upper screw, did I do something wrong? Greetings from France

      Hi and thank you for watching! It's a very very thin line between catching on or beeing to loose. You can also adjust the tension on the worm drive itself with the screws behind the black plastic covers on the side of the mount. I guess I did do adjustments like 8 times before I was happy and then still installed the Rowan Belt drive mod.

    Are there any videos about lubing the worm and rain gear?

  • @francescofarolfi8726
    @francescofarolfi8726 2 роки тому +2

    Very useful, I've got a question, how do you tell gears are not binding?

    • @frosthastrophotography
      @frosthastrophotography  2 роки тому +1

      By touch and feel first I would say. You should be able to smoothly move them. Also they should run smoothly when you slew. Listen to changes in sound and they should not, off course, sieze up when slewing.

    Thank you for this very instructive video. I have a question though : I've heard some people say that while doing this fine tuning at room temperature, it's good to keep a slight backlash because at low temperature, in use conditions, thermal expansion could lead to binding you don't have at room temperature. What is your opinion on that ?

    • @frosthastrophotography
      @frosthastrophotography  2 роки тому +1

      That is a good point. I did my adjustments in my garage and not in room temperature. I did not consider that to be honest.

    Just bought eq 5 pro. Have 12v power supply. Plugged it in and it began to whistle ...zzzzzz whatever you want to call it. Is this norma ?

      @frosthastrophotography yes,just plugged In a 5 amp. High pitched whine . Press the direction keys ...moves a mm and then switches off and goes back to initialising. Question. 0.5 Amps = 5 Amps correct.

      @@jonrobinson1026 A 2amp 12v should be 24w and a 3amp 12v should be 36w, double check that.
