    ❤️ Maggie wheeee is how we say it I think lol. As if it’s French. You know I’m arachnis obsessed. I sing Maggie Mae to mine all the time cause I’m a nutter. This was such a fun video! The pink yellow cattleya and that Mimi Palmer hybrid are gorgeous. And we got to see muffin! ❤️

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 роки тому +1

      Muffin loves it in there, I think he believes it's now his own private garden and so he likes to help me with upkeep and repotting 😃 That's why the room was such a mess haha, I'd been repotting stuff with Muffin's 'help' 😁 He likes to play with LECA... this Arachnis has grown sooo much since I moved over! Remember initially I got it as a stump with a keiki? Then I eventually cut the bottom stump off once the keiki had enough roots, and now you would never know it was a cutting! They grow so well 😃

      The Orchid Room oh good of muffin to help spread the leca all over the place cause we all know that’s rare and difficult to do all on our own 😂 I do remember your little Maggie! They are tough plants! My baby one is chucking out roots like crazy in sh but Maggie has been a little slower to decide that she loves it. I increased her light a bit and hopefully that gets her moving. :)

      My hero ❤ I looked it up after to double check 🙂 Seems they also close in warmer temps to reduce water loss, so 25C was pushing the limit even for those that had stomata open. It was morning when I filmed this so once the sun came round it got even hotter... Some evidence for absorption through the epidermis as well though, so maybe it still did something. Thanks for stopping by! 🙂❤

      We have had a few intermittent heat waves here, followed by a week or so of rain, then another hot spell 🙈 Can't keep up- last week it was more consistently 25C or so in the conservatory, but 80% humidity with the rain outside. Then I had the fan on full without the humidify setting, worrying about how damp everything was 😅 but the week before was when it got up to 35C and I got a leaf burn on a catt, and I had already panic bought the shade netting a few weeks ago when it was hot, so decided it needed to go up.
      The gigantea hybrid is lovely, and faster growing than the gigantea parent! Only thing missing Is fragrance! With the large amount of gigantea in it, i suspect it will start making larger sprays of flowers once it matures more. It has a nice big lily-pad leaf shape too!

      Hi Kelly! I only purchase from UK or European eBay sellers, so I don't know where abouts you are located, but if further afield then you wouldn't have to worry about this particular one or three, since plants can't be purchased from across regions without investing alot of time and money into the correct paperwork 🙂 If you're in the UK though, I'll grab the names out of ones I've had bad experiences with for you!

      It comes through very pink in winter and looks very very like my mini crystelle-smith, but a big version. Pot. Psycho bride has been suggested, but that also looks a bit off. I think it's only yellow now because of the very hot weather 🤷‍♀️ I've shown it in bloom 4 times now and each time it looks slightly different haha... I don't think it's possible to put an ID on this one unfortunately. It's very large, both bifoliate and unifoliate, which rules out many of the minis with similar flowers

    How do you find your warmer growers are affected by the cooler temperatures? Any signs of them objecting? I am asking because I would like to give my Phals cooler night temps but I’m afraid it will affect my warmer growers. They all grow in the same space.

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 роки тому

      Hi! I'm not having any cooler temps really? Lowest is 18C. One night it went lower, but it was 25C that day, so on an average basis, fine. Average temp between the day nights is probably 25C atm, average 18C nights 28C days. I wouldn't let warm growers fall to below 18C in my constantly moist systems as that would likely end in cold, wet, dead roots. My cooler growers were struggling in the heat, so I had to move them to a cooler room 😿 I think slightly cooler nights are OK if they're balanced by warmer days, but for my setup I don't feel comfortable with phals and catts below 18C for very long.

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 роки тому

      Just to add- You grow in water culture right? So is there the possibility of maybe draining of the reservoirs overnight so if they're going cooler, they don't have the water sitting around the roots? It would be a bit labour intensive though, but just a thought!

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591
      @daniellesorchidranch1591 4 роки тому

      The Orchid Room yes! I do grow in water culture, however my warmer growers, such as my Cattleya’s, are in a semi hydro set up (at least my version of semi hydro😁). So the water in the glass is not really a worry. It’s more that my warm growers are the ones right up against the window which is where the cool air would be coming from if I open the windows at night. So I’m worried the top growth and sheaths might be affected by the cool air. I try not to expose them to temperatures below 18 degrees as well but I know my Phals love those occasional cool nights so I wondering what your observations on the lower night temperatures were. We haven’t had too many cool nights lately but it looks like in a week or so we should have a few cool nights so I’m looking forward to that. Thank for your reply!

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 роки тому +1

      No problem! I hope you get some spikes! So far having a couple of cooler nights hasn't seemed to affect anything, but it hasn't really dipped very far and the days have been so hot they're probably relieved by it. Its all new to me though, everything was much easier to control before! 🙂

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Kelly! I've only just started doing it, but whenever there is a hot day I try and go out in the morning and spray down, either just with low amounts of epsom salts in the water (rain water- finally got a few water butt's set up off the conservatory gutter and we had a few storms, so they're overflowing! ), or on watering days I also add some of my rain mix fertiliser too and spray everywhere. Lower than I fertilise if I'm just watering at the roots, as I don't really want loads of white mineral build ups on the leaves! I'm alternating with higher fertiliser at the roots at the moment, as with all the natural light I've noticed they definitely want more nutrients. So I'm trying to get it into them every way I can! 🙂

    Hi How much should I be fertilizing during winter please

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 роки тому +1

      Depends entirely on your setup your environment, what you're growing in, how much light the orchids recieve, what your fertiliser is, temperatures, how often you water, what orchids you are growing etc. The true answer is- how long is a piece of string 🙂 Please don't take that with any negative tone at all, but it really is impossible to generalise. I give a bit more info on this in the longer fertiliser video linked in the comments and description, but you really need to go by how your orchid is growing and what it is doing at the time. More growth- more nutrients. More light- more nutrients. Higher temps- more nutrients. Winter affects this in two ways- less light, lowers temps, less growth. And cooler temps- needing to let the pot dry out more, so watering less. As a general rule, I reduce only slightly in winter as I grow under LED lights and keep the temperatures warmer, so I have year round growth. But in your conditions, you may need to reduce more, it's trial and error really. A safe bet would be half what you fertilise with in summer, if you notice dramatically slower growth. Hope that helps!

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 роки тому +1

      If they aren't growing new leaves or new roots at all, I would maybe drop them down to a maintenance level, maybe 100ppm of a complete balanced orchid fertiliser. It's easier to start low and build up, than to go too high and get root burn. During growth phals are very heavy feeders- several studies found 60+ppm Nitrogen was optimal in ideal conditions for maintaining growth and preventing lower leaf drop. That's under controlled heat and light though. I feed higher than most because previously I have had lights to drive growth, but now I'm finding I actually need to feed even more honestly with all the sunlight and heat. Trying to adjust to keep up with them- currently on around 400ppm of my fertiliser, which works out around 50ppm N. So, I could possibly go even higher, but I like to increase slowly and wait to see responses first. Great that your phals are spiking!

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 роки тому

      Yeah I've made some inorganic self-watering mounts for some ramblers that I'm really liking, so I think this one will be getting a modified version! Leave it potted, but make like a slanted board in the pot that it can climb up, threaded with synthic so it still grabs moisture from the pot. That's the thought process anyway, it literally grows vertically and the new roots don't get down, so I need to do something soon.
      Haha and this is after taking like 20 miltoniopsis out and putting them upstairs 🤣 I think I want to refine what I'm keeping now though with the orchids I love growing, leaning more toward species and primary hybrids. I'm thinking of doing a giveaway for some complex hybrid phals, den phal complex hybrids and den nobile complex hybrids. I just don't love them- theyre OK, but they just kinda space fill...
