I got to meet Dizzy Gillespie in 1992 when I was playing for the University of Alabama Jazz Ensemble. He came and performed with the jazz ensemble and we played this tune. Unfortunately, he passed away sometime within the next year. The next year I got to meet and play with Wynton Marsalis. Great memories!
Thanks! Those are memories that I'll cherish for life. Wynton sat in w/the jazz combo that was playing for his post-concert party. That's where I got to play with him. After the party I got to meet him. One of his assistants brought me over to him & introduced me. Wynton said, "Yeah man, you can swing! You can swing!" I was on cloud nine for the next two weeks at least. The Univ. of Ala. has a great music department. But I'm a little biased.
It's a real all-star big band. Most of those members later become leaders in the big band world. My favorite big band with Lincoln Center jazz orchestra, WDR big band. But I think Grp big band is the best.
In an alternate universe, I'm hosting a network talk show (prime time or late night) ... and this is used for my opening theme - complete with the horns standing up as I come out at 6:52 .
Hate to say it but i think Echav was being sarcastic. But getting to play with these great musicians sounds like it would have been a fantastic experience.
It seems most of the comments are from friends of the band.Great . my old buddy is Phillip Bent, when we first met i didn't know what he was carrying all the time ? Yeah i , as we got to know each other ,i realised it was his flute. DONT TOUCH IT. X It was Steve Williamson,Courtney Pine, and( Ronny Jordan. R.I.P we miss you!
As good as Brecker is, there isn't anything he could do that Arturo couldn't do right back and more so. Not even in my dreams would I want to be trading solos with El Toro.
Sorry Randy. I love you and you're my trumpet hero. But manteca is a song of Arturo sandoval's life. Sandoval knows how to play this song. As if children are playing, he plays solo. Latin Jazz!!
These musicians are too talented. It seems like every song they play, they're just like, laughing at all the other musicians in the world, like "lol u suck watch this"
Got mad respect for both Valentin and Bent, there certainly aren't many that hang flute like that on a Dizzy chart, but both of those guys can all day long.
Can we just take a second to breath in how insane this lineup is?!
For a musician watching this is like recharging your life level back to 100%. May I salute all my fellow musicians!
The Japan 93' Live was in the stratosphere of big band. AMAZING AND INCREDIBLE ! Beyond that even.
All of this great talent in one band, I can't stand it -- absolutely beautiful!!

Absolutely amazing solo by Bent!
What a group of musicians!!! Fantastic. I would have loved to been there, live.
Cavolo!! Grandi!!!
Spaccano tutto!!!! Dajene seccheeeee

Really great flute solo!!! Want to hear more
I love this song! The guys played their hearts out, and it's a Latin beat I can dance to.

For the on-air theme, it runs through 0:36 and then takes the pick-up at 6:36 on the way out.
That works, right? 😉
"Oh Randy that sounds great, how long have you been soloing over this tune? No, you're doing just fine buddy." -What Arturo is thinking
I really love Randy's style. The best trumpeter in my life.
If we speak of a tournament of musicians, those forming this Big Band would be playing in the Division of Honour.

esse video e muito bom so stars''
not many people can make the flute sound mean. this is amazing.
I'm guessing the chart was written by Tom Scott, who's also playing baritone sax here....
A good guess.
The drummer is Dave weckl, right?
Correct bro
Not too shabby.
Sevgili abim İSMET SIRAL... bunu 1965 de keşfetmişti.. Flüt.. ve jazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz........

do you any good quality sound of Manteca?

@Easleytee Debatable. Dolphy was good. But you have guys like Hubert Laws, Dave Valentin and Herbie Mann on that list too.
I don't know...he sounded sincere enough.

Nelson Rangell is the man of saxophone
The emsemble sounds a tad out of tune. Is it the video compression or my ears are getting rusty?
Flute Player ain't no Dave Valentin!!!!!

Latin flavor impro is the answer ..some body latin like dave valetin..they dint pick the right one for that tune ..although he plays good
skip to 145 and listen to this jazz flute

CDとVHSビデオを買った記憶がある。家のどこかにあると思う。
