  • My review and test of the First Alert Propane/Explosive Gas Detector model GC-01
    A total fail from First Alert.
    For those who are unhappy about the test done in the video, realize that it comes from the fact that our RV was full of propane gas when we came home late one night, and the First Alert hadn't noticed it. It was mounted in a proper (and low) location, and we would have been dead if we had gone to sleep earlier that night. The gas was from a leak that completely emptied a 5 gallon tank of propane into our otherwise fairly airtight RV/bus.
    I suppose if I had died I wouldn't have been able to complain about the failure of the detector.

    I've lived thru months of exposure to CO and gas. The first thing I noticed was headaches, going outside for 15 minutes cleared them. Second, memory loss, you end up just standing there like a zombie. Third, pain in feet and hands, like needles. Fourth, after a while your hands will turn blue, especially if you try and exercise, you use up what you have and it will show. It's amazing how very few people know anything about Furnaces, CO, Freon leaks inside, testing procedures, etc. If anyone ever reads an idiotic statement like, "Very few people die from CO each year",.... It's because nobody knows why they died. I had to tell ER to test me specifically for Carboxyhemoglobin, because the Oxygen saturation units they use will falsely show normal Oxygen levels.

    I have a different model from a different manufacturer. I tested it and it is also completely useless. These are literally worse than not having anything and they go for around $40. I have yet to find one that someone tests which actually works as expected.

    Mine don't work as well I did it over the stove same result. Now I'm wondering if the oxygen gas mixture from the stove isn't triggering the alarm. Is there any way on your stove to have just pure gas coming out to test it?

    • @alfie9876
      @alfie9876 5 років тому

      If it's pure gas it will replace the oxygen in the room so it will suffocate you but there won't be an explosion

    • @daveola
      @daveola  5 років тому

      The gas-air mixture from the stove can still kill you.
      More importantly, watch the whole video, I know the unit doesn't work because we had an actual leak and the alarm did nothing.

      Reading helps before blowing your self up
      It says right on the back co level and response time in minute before it alarms in worst case that would be 4 minutes your video was running for less then 1.
      Also read the manual. Push the peak level button on it to see how high you got it there to see if it's reading anything. Mine does. Will this alarm off in time to save your life sure. As it meets federal levels to prevent death and that's it yes.
      Will it go off before you get copd or ling cancer fuck no. That's why you should get an actual air quality monitor.

    omg i just spend a ton on these and some mail in radon test kits, so who knows of a good tester? man i have symptoms that docs are trying to figure out, falling, dizzy, blurred double vision, feel like i am glitching out, ready to black out, ears hissing,crawling, head feels like air or blood is cut off at throat, chest tightens, asthma goes wild, DAMN,,,,,,,,,,,,

    I did this exact same test, except i covered the alarm with a plastic cover to prevent the gas from escaping,it still took a minute but it did go off.

    • @Wigglythegreat2
      @Wigglythegreat2 29 днів тому

      I read that gas detectors like these by design have to detect the gas for several minutes before they alert. The test performed in the above video seems to be performed improperly. The was you did it with a plastic bag is probably a more accurate way to test.

    I watched another review and "I think" the instructions say it could take 5 to 15 minutes to setoff the alarm. A youtuber had like 6 with 2 knockoffs that never went off but the others eventually did.

      Watch the whole video, the real point of the video is not the "test" but the fact that I came back to the bus and it was full of propane, and the alarm was silent

      Honeywell sells units that are legit, it's a reputable company. You get what you pay for, how much is your health worth!? These First Alert monitors don't work, you can't test whether a sensor is working. It also affects it with humidity levels.

  • @jobo2612
    @jobo2612 4 роки тому

    That's astonishing. Did you get a 2nd unit and try it? But - the fact your unit didn't fail self-test is a double failure.

    • @daveola
      @daveola  4 роки тому

      I never bought another first alert. Regardless of the self test, the fact that it did nothing when my RV was actually full of propane was enough for me to not trust the company.

    I bought the Kidde brand because my elderly father has left the gas on twice with no flame. We woke up to a high level of gas which my daughter noticed, thankfully. So when I got the Kidde alarm, I wanted to do a real test not just a self test [press the button]. I turned on the gas on the stove [with no flame] and held the new alarm with new battery over the stove about a foot away for about 10 seconds after which I turned off the gas. No alert. I called Kidde and they said never to test it that way. They also said it has to reach a high enough level to trigger. I quit after that. I argued with them that I'm not comfortable without seeing the alarm work in real life test. I recently found info about "bump" testing gas alarms. Still looking into it.

    • @daveola
      @daveola  6 років тому +1

      Yes, as mentioned in the video and the comments, this is not a great way to test one of these, but the real issue was when we came home and the bus was *filled* with propane gas and the tester was silent.
      Ugh. Would have likely killed us if the leak had happened at night.

    How old is the detector that you are testing? Because they have a limited life. Where was it installed in your "rig"? If you read the user manual, the solid green LED is an indicator you have normal AC or battery power. If there is a gas or CO alarm the green LED turns red and flashes with the horn. The battery back up is working as advertised...from the user manual - "All segments of display are turned On for a short time upon initial power. Then the battery level icon is displayed flashing." Was looking for a legitimate review but yours leaves more questions than answers.

    • @daveola
      @daveola  5 років тому

      Some good questions, but you'll see that the answers don't really change the content of my video.
      The detector was about a year old, so still quite 'young'.
      It was mounted at about knee level, in a good airflow area, as given by the directions. There was power and there was battery backup as well.

  • @vinnievalentine421

    That test button does nothing but test that the unit is on. It does not mean that the units sensor is functional. Most of these units will go off when CO uninteruuptedly sensed for 15 minutes. If a breeze go by it, it wont go off.

    • @daveola
      @daveola  5 років тому

      1) There's no dispute about what the test button does
      2) This is an explosive gas detector, I'm testing it's ability to test for *propane* not CO, which it is supposed to detect.
      I'm not sure you watched the video.
