  • the amazing TI has 3 forms of power, now i have added a 4th in the form of a 5hp 4 stroke outboard motor, on tick over it pushed the TI to 5mph.
After the first test we discovered we needed to beef up the engine mount attached to the hull.
However the motor got us to 16 miles on its first maiden trip.

Nice, I see 2.5hp a lot on the Hobie but I'm in the Bay Area with a strong tide at times and I want 5hp to punch it if it's bad. I fought an awful tide once with the sail and pedals combined with my wife and dog onboard. Not again! I need to build a good mount I guess.

I always thought a small motor makes this boat even more versatile. The 5HP doesn't add much weight/mass over the commonly used 2HP one and the 4-stroke puttering is not as intrusive as the 2-stroke type. It allows AI owners who live on estuaries to quickly access local Bays for sailing, not to mention the safety backup if you get a disabling breakage in your sailing kit.

Couple of things... have a look at the huge volume of water swirling into your rear cargo area, keeping that circular hatch completely submerged. I net you found a lot of water inside the hull afterwards. I recommend you add a "dam wall" along the starboard side of the cargo area, to keep the water out. Secondly, that motor is way too overpowered; as you said, that was on tickover already. I doubt you could ever run the motor on full throttle.

Thmotor was on tick over and certainly not anywhere near full power, the reason was simply because you are only allowed to go 5mph on the Broads.

+ian robinson Hi Ian, do you have any info on how you made the mount. Worried about drilling holes in my TI. Thanks,
      Steve, from South Africa.

Hi Ian, perhaps if you could drop me an email? Love to learn more about your mount and if it has any affect on the hull: steve (at) thesafaristore.com. Thanks!

    "Incredible balanced ".....
    Hilarious.
The motor is WAY to heavy and does overpower the Island.
If you would turn your head around, you may notice that the engine is flooding your vessel....

This video is useless without footage of opening it up, preferably with some waves.

Hi there. Just to add we went on The Norfolk broads where there is a speed limit of 5mph secondly we were only testing the engine on the new mount so did not want to add too much stress to the mount and thirdly it was not all about speed more rather than if you had no wind and you were feeling lazy you had another means of power.

ian robinson I didn't have to watch it, and it was a bit of a waste of time. The video shows no advantage/ disadvantage to having a smaller 4 stroke. But hey, nice hair.

    Nonsense.
    Overpowered.
    Overweight.
    Flushing hatch.
    Wrongly placed.
    Absolutely NOT recommended.
