  • It’s here! Was it worth the wait? We sure hope so! We take an exhaustive look at Ryan’s favorite comic book, Hellboy, and why ending the series is what makes it one of the best comic books. We go over everything up to and including Hellboy in Hell, so know that going in if you have not read the series. BUT, knowing what happens isn’t the end-all. It’s the journey sometimes. Also, I LOVE THE GOON! IT WAS JUST A PROP!

    "good stories end"
    i really love this line, a good story deserve an end, and in order to make a good story it must end

    That's a good point "Good stories ends", that's why i'm always reluctant to start comics that seem to never end like marvel and dc.

      The fact that they never end is the smsllest problem in my opinion.

      It's why I eventually stopped reading monthly issues and instead took to graphic novels. Even with characters designed to go on forever, like batman, these graphic novels at least tend to be focused on one specific story or ark. So while yes there's stories that come later, at least I'm getting to read a story with a beginning, middle, and end.

    When I finish "Hellboy in Hell" I felt weird, but not in a bad way but the opposite. I didn't want Hellboy end like that but at the same time I totally understood why he must end the way he did because of the good of the story.
    For years I saw "Mr. Boy" fighting against his own kind for the good of humanity, he deserves somekind of retribution for his efforts, suffering and loyalty and in his adventures we saw glintches or prophecies that warn us the thing was not going to end well for the big red guy.
    I think the end was perfect because you really feel bad about Hellboy destiny.

    I constantly tell people who read comics to give hellboy a chance, for that exact point you made in the beginning. It has an ending. Granted, there are 2 graphic novels after the "end", but those end too, in a more so Stephen King sort of fashion. To be able to read and understand the scope of a character in a series, from beginning to end, without dragging it on with endless side stories, reincarnations, re-adaptations and story arcs, you can really connect with the main character and remember almost every detail of his life shown to you from start to finish.

    You get Hellboy as well as anyone on this planet. You get all the reasons why I love Hellboy; and what others, director who will remain unmentioned, completely miss. Hellboy is the ultimate anti-hero underdog. You can't get more anti-hero underdog than the half human offspring of a duke of hell.

    Pretty good summation of one of my favorite comics ever. Hellboy is such a perfect blend of obscure folklore, a dark gothic atmosphere, pulpy comic book action and deep, human tragedy, with a beautiful, almost mythical overall story arc that is so tragic yet satisfying to follow to its inevitable conclusion.

    Mignola has an amazing writing style, he encapsulates the reality of personalities, yet builds it all up with unique beautiful artwork and mythos, Hellboy is one of the few comic characters I have an almost spiritual connection with, it's a dream like book, yet has such an honest feel, the story can be picked up at any point in the series and still feel satisfying, that is one of the many reasons I find Hellboy to be a true hero and will go down as an incredibly timeless story and character, Mike is also a super chill dude and I'm really glad to have met him, great video, I'm glad other people can have these long length enjoyments of comic characters, especially Hellboy, good stuff man!!!

    These are the kind of stories that I aspire to write. This video really helped me understand that stories can be better if they didn’t feel the need to repeat itself. It can work, but that all depends on what comes naturally to the writer. Thank you for making this; it was thanks to this that I picked up Hellboy!!!

    I'm staking my claim on this statement; Hellboy is the Breaking Bad of comics. It is such a fantastic piece of storytelling, that it had to end where it did.
    Breaking Bad is an amazing show. I was shocked to see it end. But looking back, yeah, I'm glad it did. Imagine if it were to continue on for 3-4 more seasons. You'd have a show that had an amazing first half seasons, but a lackluster last half. But since it ended at 5 seasons, you have overall an amazing show.
    Hellboy would've been the same. It would've started out amazing, but for all we know would still be going. And yeah, it might be good, but would've been starting to drag, admittedly.
    But it ended. And it ended gloriously.

    Hellboy in Hell is one of my favourite if not favourite comic book of all time. Hellboy introduced me to the awosemness of indie comics and as a kid who mostly read Marvel and Zagor and Dylan Dog (italian comics popular in my country) It also made me want to make comics which is something I want to do to this day. Anyway to make it short Hellboy blew my dumb baby brain, Mignola is up there with Moebius among my favourite artists and made me love this beautiful art form.

    • @AlphaRookie
      @AlphaRookie  6 років тому

      I know Dylan Dog, but not Zagor. Mignola actually did a cover for a trade collection of Dylan Dog here in the states. Unfortunately I've not read any Dylan Dog yet, but I do love Dellamorte Dellamore which I believe is heavily inspired by Dylan Dog? Thanks for watching.

    • @gabrielpetricevic9306
      @gabrielpetricevic9306 6 років тому

      Yeah Dellamorte Dellamore was meant to be a Dylan Dog movie but they couldn't get the rights. If you like Hellboy you will probably enjoy Dylan Dog. Zagor is more of a pulp comic book about this guy who was respected by Native Americans and fought outlaw cowboys, monsters, wizards. It's alright.

    • @davidhanson4909
      @davidhanson4909 6 років тому +1

      What did you think of the actual Dylan Dog movie, starring one the seven best on-screen Supermen, Brandon Routh?
      I thought it was ok, but i've no knowledge of the source material.

    • @gabrielpetricevic9306
      @gabrielpetricevic9306 6 років тому +2

      OK If you saw that movie without knowing anything about Dylan Dog you will enjoy it. I even think Brandon Routh could be a great Dylan Dog but the movie does that thing where the protagonist is someone who is special by making him the protector of sorts of the normal and the paranormal while in the comics he isn't special except the fact that he bones a girl in every comic. He is just a paranormal investigator who is damaged beyond repair but is strong enough to hold himself together. The movie is fun but like the Hellboy movies he makes things more complicated than the comics for no reason.

    The first 5-7 issues of Hellboy in Hell were beautiful, I find it kind of sad that the last few issues felt rushed. I knew he'd eventually return to earth (based on Liz's vision in the final arc of BPRD: Plague of Frigs), but I wish he could have put out 3-5 more issues in Hell to flesh it out

    It feels like you valued the unique story telling of Hellboy more than other, traditional comics due to the amount of life and independence it had. Its story isnt driven by the artist. Rather, Hellboy drove the story as if he himself were real and we, the readers, came along for the ride. That's pretty cool.
    Also, holy shit this was a 1 year long video?

    Being a lowly 14 year old, I have a lot of time on my hands. No shut up. I mean A LOT, A LOT. Due to this, and also my love of comics, I eventually read all of Mike Mignola's hellboy universe comics. From the original Hellboy: Seed of Destruction to B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know. ALL OF IT. It took more than 6 months to get caught up and I regret none of it. The amount of lore and connections is perfectly balanced with the amount of character development and depth, something rare with Marvel and DC. Sometimes even being spectacularly intertwined and reliant on the other aspect: * cough * Abe Sapien * cough *. Definitely the best comic series I have ever read.

    Hey, so know I’m about 5 year late but …
    1. I absolutely love the effort you put into making this with skits etc. it’s all time consuming and exhausting but made the video really enjoyable to watch.
    2. One of my first Comics that I truly fell in love with was Sandman and it also ends. It’s a wonderful story that hit really close to my heart and this video single handedly convinced me yeah I love old monster movies and X Files monster of the week episodes I should definitely read this. So I Just bought every library edition. So thank you.
    (Also special shout out to Harrow County another great comic that also ends and it’s a better experience and story for it.)
    Anyways thank you.

      Going to do a short followup video with my thoughts on the movies. Short version: I agree. I like the movies a lot, but they're not the comics and the comics are more important pieces of art than the movies.

      hey¡ Alpha Rookie, nice video ... but do you have some video about "PLANETARY" by warren ellis , and john cassidy...? at least for me , planetary is as good as hellboy's comics....

    • @eastvandb
      @eastvandb 5 років тому +1

      Planetary is another series that I go back to again and again. And I wish there was more of it, but I realize that one of the reasons it's so satisfying is that… well, "good stories end".

    Hell boy was one of the best comics. Period...i just realized.....dmcs nero kinda has the whole demon arm and revolver thing.....do you think capcom took inspiration from hellboy for nero? Cause it might be just coincidence.

    • @AlphaRookie
      @AlphaRookie  5 років тому

      You'd probably need to read into mythology of Nero the real life person and see where the inspirations come from. Not enough of an expert.

    A problem that I do have with most Western comics is the fact that there is no ending to nearly all of the characters, namely DC and Marvel. I mean before we even get an ending to one character in one universe, then get rebooted into more universes or the universe in question gets rebooted. But that's also partly in their favor, you can pick up any series that still have stories that begin and end. It's more about the said characters having a situation. Though it also could be the reason why none of the good TV shows ever get a proper ending.

    I just got finished reading Hellboy (including Hellboy in Hell), the majority of the BPRD books, and Abe Sapien's side adventures during Hell on Earth. I don't think The Devil You Know/ Ragna Rok caught me in the same way as the ending of the initial Hellboy run. I was actually reduced to weeping as they revealed King Arthur and the noble dead preparing for their last charge, and Hellboy's death was fast and perfect.

    6:40 Welllllllll.... I don't agree. The Orgiinal Twilight Zone will always be amazing. Star Trek II is still among the best of the Trek films regardless of Star Trek INto Darkness, Tom Baker's run as The Doctor is always going to be fantastic to go through no matter how much they butcher the show's legacy in NuWho. The original ALIEN will always be the best in the series no matter how many luke-warm turds they fart out onto streaming platforms.... A quality piece of work is always quality, no matter what comes before or after it. However, the series should have ended with Alien 3, that much is certain.
    15:36 Whoever is behind the camera SHUT UP. I want to hear what he has to say, damnit!

    I'm pretty sure it's "HECK-AH-TEE," but when I was reading Hellboy back in the day I always pronounced it "HEH-KATE."
    I never read any of the Hellboy comics that weren't drawn by Mike Mignola. It's one of those creations I had no interest in when the creator was not involved with it in their original manner (aka if they started out writing/drawing it). He is also one of those artists that I did not like what their style later turned into. Strangely enough, I always prefer the "mid career" style of artists like this, the list including Frank Miller (Sin City era), Erik Larsen (Savage Dragon #12-58 era), and Wake the Devil/Conqueror Worm era for Mike. Don't fully dig the Hellboy in Hell style. It seems....lazy. But that's the same way I feel about the other's later styles too.

    I got into Hellboy shortly after Berserk creator Kentaro Miura passed away when I heard that "Hellboy is America's Berserk," I was interested, but not sold. Later on, I was looking for a completed comic, and what do you know, Hellboy.
    I'm really happy I did, and I'm grateful this story isn't going on until the end of time.
    I understand the business aspect of continuing characters and stories forever, but from an artistic and storytelling perspective, it's completely downside up.

    So why do ya wanna even know?

    Holy shit. A few years ago back when I was in high school I was at the comic store where Ryan works and was starting to read Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing. I asked him his opinion on it, he said it was one of his favorites but not his number one and so of course I asked what his favorite series was. He told me it was Hellboy which was a series of been thinking of reading for a while at that point. So I got Seed of Destruction and ever since it’s been one of my favorite series and has had a great inspiration on my art. Thanks Ryan!
