    Thank you Don for making your scripts available. There are at least 2 other great video series on this topic on YT (namely the Everlanders build and someone who put Crankshaft in a Mazda). All have had variations of the solution to the boot/shutdown problem. Yours seems to be the most elegant. Great to hear that it doesn't overheat.

    Thank you! For screen glare issues, I connected a TSL2561 light sensor module for auto-brightness and auto day-night switching. Then I tried tilting the screen to where the sun and line of sight weren't aligned. Works OK! OpenAuto does support a different light sensor out of the box, the TSL2561 is just what I had.

    if you live in an area where winter happens, the freezing cold will shrink the hot glue and make it brittle. if the hot glue is holding any weight, it’s likely to pop off after hitting a big bump during the freezing cold.

    as alot of car electronics - i would not shut it down immediately if not needed. Would just shut down the display at first. on 60Ah car battery, RPi can run around 10 days. I'm not suggesting to keep it running for 10 days. I would suggest to keep it running for some calculated value for daytime (1-2 hours) and maybe immediate turnoff after dark (depending on your workload). This would work on most of the cases for the immediate readiness and reducing bootcounts. Also it could be turned off straigh away as car has been locked and booted up if unlocked.

  • @AlphaCharlieFour
    @AlphaCharlieFour 3 роки тому +2

    I know on the Ford sync units they don't actually shut down until after 5 minutes. That way if you like shut off the car and run in somewhere and come right back out It doesn't have to go through a boot cycle. It just kind of like goes to sleep and wakes back up. If you could do something like that where it wouldn't actually shut down for like 5 minutes and just and just power the screen on and off it would cut out the need to boot all together like if you are just like running and out of somewhere.

    • @prodazzda

      You can modify the delays to your needs in the scripts. The shutdown trigger for the PI comes from the relays and the key position, atleast in Novas current installation. If Nova doesn't do it in the future, I can upload new scripts and/or wiring to accomodate such functionality.

    What about making the booting "smarter"? Tracking:
    Your phone's bluetooth signal as you approach/depart from the car;
    The use of the key fob to lock or unlock the car;
    Signals of doors open/closed, particularly driver's;
    Whether the ignition is indeed on or not;
    How long certain conditions have stayed the same;
    and
    Whether the seat sensor detects a driver present in the car...
    You could create logic paths to boot or shutdown the device based on heuristics.

  • @MrSloika

    If you mounted the amp inside there it's technically not a 'head unit'. A 'head unit' is just that, the place where the display and controls are. In most factory installs the amp is mounted in the trunk, under a seat, etc. , in other words away from the head unit. The amp is what's making most of the heat, you may want to consider moving the amp out of there. That said this is an interesting project. Not so much for a modern car with a CAN bus since most modern cars already come with enough electronic do-dads from the factory. This would be a very interesting project for a classic car from the pre-digital era.

    I know this video is from a long time ago, but I'm planning to implement something similar, more focused on the OBD2 port. How do you prevent the OBD2 from draining the car battery? As these adapters use power from both the OBD2 port and the battery. Also, considering it's been two years, have you faced any issues with temperatures, dust, or humidity affecting the system or Raspberry Pi? I would greatly appreciate your response. Thanks for your support, and best of luck with all your endeavors! ❤

      There are at least two different types of touchscreen (resistive and capacitive touch) they both work differently and have different advantages/limitations (multitouch, touch with gloves, and sensitivity of touch etc) but I would imagine with a thin flexible screen protector either would work ok with the technology today although, I'm no expert on touchscreen.

    Ended up in the end just moving the storage to USB3 flash drive and powering it with the usb car lighter. It will just hard shutdown when ever I turn my car off. Not ideal but its fine so far with no corruption. No important data on the USB anyway, just reimage a new one when it does fail.

    Envious of OEM boost. Next level techie would be how to get an aftermarket air fuel gauges aux output signal into the pie then into torque pro as a PID somehow.
    Some of the aftermarket android dins do not shut down for a few minutes after turning off the car(just the screen) so in case you run into a 7-11 or something and get right back in the car you don't have to wait for boot up. See that being an added feature to your script?

    • @pascha4527

      The pins need to be shorted, so the ESP translate a 12V signal (ACC) to a closed loop signal (Relay) which is momentary.
      I believe it could also be done with a 555 timer and a transistor.

I've found the official Raspberry Pi touchscreen it too wide and I don't want to risk damaging it trying to trim it down but do want something with brightness control. Looks like it's possible for HDMI displays but apparently needs DDC/CI support.

When we are all ready to go i start the car. The ignition power is restarted so the ESP send again command to start the Pi and the same is reatarted. I was thinking is there any way to prevent this restart. I have some idea but not sure how to change the script for the ESP. What i was thinkingis to use input for the ESP comming from any GPIO from the Pi and if the Pi is running not send start command to the relay to start the Pi. Any comment or suggestion how to prevent restart is appreciated.

      Bench testing my 10.1” floating setup now and the built in rotary encoders work amazing. Just wish maps volume could be adjusted separately:(

    Ill be making one of these very soon, but my question is. Are you able to mirror Netflix on this? I'll be taking the car it's going in on long road trips and I'd love to have it for entertainment. Thank you!

      Open auto does support screen mirroring. So what ever is on your phone is also on the screen

    Where does the Raspberry Pi get internet signal from while your driving?

    • @Kamccizo
      @Kamccizo 3 роки тому +1

      From the phone WiFi hotspot, Bluetooth, or USB. However, this is still a pain point for me. Seamless Android Auto is achieved when the Raspberry Pi is the hotspot but there's no internet for both phone and Raspberry Pi with that configuration. USB will be the best option IMHO.

    • @jyvben1520
      @jyvben1520 3 роки тому

      @@Kamccizo is the link between phone and rpi not bluetooth ?
      that would still leave the rpi wifi available for in car users.

    • @Kamccizo
      @Kamccizo 3 роки тому

      @@jyvben1520 Unfortunately there's no Android Auto support over Bluetooth connection. To get AA, you'll need WiFi from phone or Rpi. However, while connected to Rpi's WiFi apps like Waze, Maps and Spotify will lose internet connectivity. Best case for wireless AA is phone hotspot, which will require you to go into AA and activate developer settings and start head unit server very so often.

      I have a USB powered SIM card router in mine. There are raspberry sim card adapters, or you could use an external USB powered router that creates a wifi hotspot.

    Would it be possible to have Google maps work on the screen without a phone connection by using a gps dongle and a locally stored copy of the maps?

      Look into android or android-like OS emulation on linux. You can install google maps on there as an app.

    Hey check this out this will take all the clumsiness out of oap for u in currently working on it and get it configured to work on gm class 2 serial data since I don't have can bus I have to figure out how I can get my rpi to talk directly to my bcm over the much slower and only able to ask 1 question and get 1 reply from the controller modules instead of being able to ask 1 question and get 10 20 answers back the same is said for performing actions but hey this is the solution for u to make it much more driver friendly and safe as u won't have to press 4 or 5 buttons to navigate between the obd info and android auto and even hvac controls or ur reverse camera ua-cam.com/video/wKBC56UhK64/v-deo.html
