Things like the GFO starving the corals... it's all about the balance of the import/export of phosphates and minimizing the PO4 introduction with quality dry foods and less frozen foods, therefore using less GFO, for example. Thanks for taking the time!

wow...great video, amazing advice. Being in and out of this salt thing for three decades and owned an aquarium store in L.A. in 1995, I have seen the trends and know what is stable and real advice. Due to multiple back and foot surgeries I have been out of the hobby for a few years and am finally cycling a shallow (gonna be mixed) reef tank I built (29 x 9 x 9)....THIS is BY FAR the best channel I have found (along with BRS.tv) giving the real deal info, and I feel very blessed to have found it, thank you Abe.

The photo enhancing is a pet peeve of mine! My once-favourite online vendor now shamelessly manipulates his photos so much, I’ve pretty much lost all trust for him. Such great tips here - and readily implemented! As for patience, I’m thrilled that I finally have polyp extension on my acros! WOOOOOO! Excited over here.....now all I have to do is get the ones that have turned green, to redevelop their original colour.....it’s always something...😁😁

Great advice. I made many of these mistakes when I first started out. Getting back in the hobby again. Definitely going to take my time stocking the tank. I've learned the advice many LFS tell you is so they can make rent some days. Going to do way more research before getting into acros. Great channel. subscribed
WOAH!! hit it. actually buyers beware. Still support your LFS BUT be willing to watch and find capacity to aid them. Most for all the little fishies(and coral......and crabs.....Oh and them various shrimps)

Yes you are right some of these corals prefer brighter shallower water and won’t grow to their full potential unless they have a brighter wider spectrum, other acropora can tolerate a deeper water less light Spectrum. Some do decent in shallow or deeper water. So most of us have to experiment. I wish I would’ve discovered you earlier, really enjoying your way of teaching thumbs up👍
I first started in the marine aquarium hobby in 1965, so 55 years, and before that it was fresh water. Just so you know I’m not a complete newbie and hopefully I have learned something in 55 years, but, there’s always room to learn more. When I first started you could buy Anemone fish and damsels for $1.98 to $2.98, pyramid butterflies were somewhere between six and eight dollars apiece. I could buy blue tang‘s for 6 to 7 dollars. I had a beautiful French angelfish that was a foot-long costing me less than $100 wild caught.
Fish that cost hundreds of dollars now would be somewhere in the 20 to $40 range in those days. I remember picking up some beautiful True Percula anemone fish in the 3 to 4 inch range. These fish came directly out of the ocean wild, Beautiful specimens! And only $3.98 apiece. Man how things have changed. As a matter fact I did spend some time collecting wild fish for the aquarium trade, but that was long ago and I’m old now and I do miss it.

first time seeing your channnel and so far i am a fan
your insight is why i trust you after spending atleast 25 thousand in reef keeping alone. the slow gradual expensive route. and how awesome you described that one coral that wants a home. out of ten 10. what works for us is as you said patient and watch whats happening before us with seeing if its possible to even take care of the animals. I would follow on with that to really get peoples hearts into it. Is seeing these as little ones wanting a home. No one wants to buy a puppy and watch it die.

The lighting part... The greatest mistake people keep thinking about light is to worship the "PAR fashion". PAR is only part of the equation. Intensity is also only part of it. I know that many people will think we are too aggressive when talking like that, but the reason why halide tanks are so great isn't only because of the intensity, but mainly because of it's quality. The differences between LEDs, T5s and halides is in their qualities.

Great video! I especially like the tip regarding “Advice”. I’ve seen several videos that give “top ten lists” and “how-to” videos; yet, they rarely show their reefs. These authors may have thousands of subscribers; but really, they’re just collecting a paycheck from their sponsors.

i definitely made some of those mistakes. I though i was ready for an acropora. tried a tenius for once, rtnd overnight. did some investigation and boy was i wrong, Alk dropped 1.5 dKh overnight. about a month later, brought a doser and then put in a monti. Ever since that mistake, which is now fixed, i now have an SPS dominant tank sitting on 3 colonies and many frags to grow out. TLDR: give it more time, get a doser, fix your tank then try again
Great advice for the many, find out what works for you! I have a Red Sea reefer 425, around 108 total gallons, I’ve had it almost three years, my acros are the size of my hand, at the same time I follow on UA-cam other Red Sea reefer tanks, three years later most have crappy looking tanks, no growth etc, I constantly would comment on their vids, but since I don’t have a UA-cam channel they never took any of my advice, so I stopped giving even the slightest advice on what they should try, it’s not all about money, I use ac products and no controller, most like to play with their controller settings and never really look and observe their tanks, I also believe light should be allot higher than 250-350, just because WWC says this or that, they just need to get their name out even more, selling their way way overpriced corals, everyone has the same looking corals, they just have a different name from each vendor and a different price!!
I just got my acro frags yesterday. I put them lower in my tank on a frag rack so I dont bleach them out. When should I start to raise them up to get more light.
I think the biggest mistake with acrophobia is not having a way to combat pests in the aquarium such as algae, flatworms, nudis ect..
But also, not giving the coral the room it needs to grow, Staghorns are an example because they grow so quickly (I mean, it’s been 5 days and the Staghorn has already grown to the point you notice a difference)
Another issue with some sps is how people might buy a frag that’s not really healed properly (This is assuming the frag is like 0.5” tall) then it’s chances of dying is higher than a frag at 1-2” tall
I've been watching your videos for months. All of them. By far your the best for information and understanding acros. So I've been spending all of 2021 so far trying to get ready for acros . My lps are doing great . I got rid of alot of other coral to make room in my tank for acros. I got rid of a huge Duncan colony frog spawn hamer corals I gave them all to the local fish store..now I have the bottom of my tank full of lps acans scolly and blastoma. The top is empty waiting for acros. I've spent hundreds on equipment like reactors for phosphate nitrates and carbon I purchased an apex the only thing left is my lighting. I'm still running those old first generation hydras.. should I upgrade lighting? I know acros need higher par . I run 100% blues and violet. 15% white 5%green and red I don't have a par meter maybe I should rent one . Will these old hydras be ok?
I'm the wrong person to ask since I've never had those lights.
I picked up my first acro this weekend. It's a yellow tip wysg something I don't know what that means but it looks cool. ..and it hasn't died yet. Yay! Lol . I got into acros from watching your videos..so keep making cool informative videos so I can learn how to keep it alive. Thanks man . I saw your video about the bucket refugium..thats a brilliant idea bro.. im going to try it..with a smaller bucket..I only have a 20 gallon sump. Hopefully I can make something work. Thanks for all your tips..your biggest fan ...el chingon...
@@marcosherrera675 Nice. Good luck with it! I have a 4g squarish bucket in my 15g sump for my 20g quaranine tank. Barely fits, but happy with it. Found it on Amazon and paid a hefty price for a bucket (~$25), but was the only place I could find one.
I was thinking of using that bucket that the co2 scrubber media comes in that CDX media. It's a small bucket. Bro .. you should patent that idea and make money off it..like you said all the other refugiums out there are not that great. With this idea you have there's no light spill and no mess..I need a refugium for nutrients. I use a co2 scrubber for PH .

Hi Abe, when it comes to being patient, if you see things going downhill or changing, how long should you wait before you act? It's hard to know whether one should just wait and see what happens, or take action asap.
It's a good question but a complicated answer. Maybe a video can be made of it.
