  • I had to kill a yellow jacket hive that was endangering people. When we uncovered the nest, the hot sun caused the unhatched larva (the yellow blobs in the chambers) to start squirming. I saw one yellow jacket hatch and back out of the cell. So I got my camera to try catching another hatch. While many of the larva are squirming, one at the upper center right was very big and active and I thought for sure I'd see it hatch, but it actually propelled itself right out of the nest onto the ground. (My camera is shaky in the middle, but hang in there... I stabilize!)
