LibreOffice,Blender, Inkscape, VLC, Notebook++, OBS, R, GIMP, Tex/LaTeX, are just the ones that currently have shortcuts on my desktop on Windows, on my Linux desktop it's basically well, everything.
@@TruthWielders I know it's Blender. I am not stupid. I only said Blender 3D so people who are not using it will not be confused with the actual Blender appliance. You get that right?
@@primefeliasiii9238 Your cue is supposed to be that I didn't get that, so its not that good. Maybe you got the notion afterward as an excuse for your blunder by declaring it a joke ?
"Everything" looks great, but gets buggy after indexing changes and is difficult to refresh. When you eventually notice the list needs updating, refreshing takes ages and lists some files hundreds of times in endless loops.
I've used Irfanview for many years. In its niche, it is phenomenal. Its editing isn't as sophisticated as Photoshop or Gimp. But so very often it has done what I need, quickly and without fuss. The range of file formats it handles certainly was incredible. And it was nifty about the way it could identify and handle files with incorrect file extensions. Indeed, I actually chose to make a payment for it.
Audacity. It was surprisingly free even decades ago given all it's features and functionality. It's particularly useful for editing audio transferred from records, cassettes or even 8-track recordings.
Linux! And with it, you get VLC, Libre Office and Blender. So it's a slam dunk that Linux beats everything else out there. (And unlike Windows, you don't have to give up your privacy and security to use it) Mozilla Thunderbird runs second. When Microsoft Outlook switched over to 'O2Auth' verification for email, Thunderbird just kept on ticking. Evolution, which I actually prefer, had to be retired if I wanted to continue accessing my Hotmail account via a mail client. I'm sure it would have been fixed eventually, as it was for Gmail, but ain't nobody got time to wait for dat. Linux being free is mindblowing. ZorinOS (currently 17.2) being my beast of choice.
GIMP is my escape from the underworld that is Adobe. But in less traveled spheres, my favorites are SiriL astrophotography preproccessing, stacking and postprocessing software, and GraXpert noise reduction and more for astrophotographs. Both are amazing and can completely replace expensive software.
Let's go beyond free. Ninite offers to install multiple free programs at once, say, if you have a new computer. I'm wary of programs that Ninite DOESN'T feature. I think it also deletes bloatware.
first thing i though of was blender. 3d, video editing, motion tracking, painting, sculpting it is one of the biggest and best free pieces of software.
LibreOffice, Panopreter Basic (text to speech), VLC media player, Gimp, EUKLID DynaGeo (for geometric constructions, though this will only be useful for a minority, as the full version only runs in German)
Xpdf is something. Lightweight, disgustingly fast. Ant renamer, Opentoonz, Pencil2D, Storyboarder, etc in fact we are blessed by the open source software community.
I've used Bulk Rename Utility on Windows for ages. I just wish it was available on Linux as most of the rename tools are sorely lacking and not as easy to use as BRU. The only other utility that comes to mind that I use a lot is MP3tag (and again, the Linux alternatives lack)
MS one note, for sketching writing notes, documents and ,any other features and it synchronize with the cloud. Mail for windows is excellent for managing emails, too bad it's getting discontinued. pdf reader by xodo free and excellent pdf reader editor.
@Sergio_Loureiro I prefer software that does one thing very well rather than software which can do more things, but not great at either thing if you know what I mean? I'm not saying that your preferences are invalid by any means, just that I have my own preferences.
In the Linux world, so the list is quite long. kvm/qemu with pcie passthru, so near bare metal performance. So I can have windows, on or off the net, when I need it.
I've been using Apache Open Office for 14 years. Needed a new desktop - got a great DELL Windows 11 --- i put Apache on and it makes my computer act like I have malware/virus. It's intentional to stop users from using non-microsoft programs, making us pay for simple spreadsheets and word processing. I read we could delete a "c code" or "s-code" i think it was called to make it work but cannot be restored. Can anyone help me? I kind of resent having to pay a monthly fee foe something I barely use or need, but I do need my spreadsheets What should I do?

Linux, Gimp, Blender, Thunderscape, Qt, Inkscape, Audacity. An update to my old Linux Apache MySQL Perl (LAMP) setup.
Gimp used to be good but I don't like it anymore. At least you can get the old theme back so you can see the icons.
Davinci Resolve is unbelievable
Blender 3D. You can create 3d models, sculpt, composite, video edit, motion track, animate, plus a game engine etc
It's "Blender" not Blender 3D.

"Everything" for quick file searching.
Fluent search is much better even though I use both.
Came here to say this, giving you upvote instead. "Everything" is my total can't-live-without tool. I use it many times a day.
@@DKonigsbach use Fluent search too, does everything "Everything" does and more!

mp3tag for organising ID3 tags within your media library.
