I've been banging around the woods for a little bit and have never seen a setup like that. Way better than a typical canoe on its side and with no more materials. Thanks for your videos!
Chris, thanks for watching. I’ve never seen it anywhere either. Been using it for 20 years. Yes the version where the canoe is laying on its side seems like the canoe takes up more usable space and makes the shelter. I’ve also set it up with two wrist sized sticks if you are worried at all about using nice paddles.
EXCELLENT. This is exactly what I want. simple, minimal, lightweight, quick, fantastic open end for looking outside, easy closedown for weather protection.. Thinking of making a smaller sized version. but Sewing a triangle shaped Groundsheet in. sewn down along the 2 long sides. design it so sides over the Canoe - from stern to bow, before Canoe is raised up. so totally inclosed . just closedown the front when required. Making it a Incredible dry, warm and comfortable tent. 🤗🤗😁😁😁🛶🏕🏞
Graham, so glad you can see the power of the design in the setup. The canoe laying on its side is more in the way than actually integral to the entire set up. Love the creative enthusiasm it has sparked. 😎

@@grahamfisher5436 thanks so much, I’m so glad you’re actually using it. Yes, in a storm with the lantern inside, it’s lovely. I have been meaning to, and will sometime film a set up in the rain on an overnight. The suggestions and enthusiasm you canoeists have inspires the next video a lot. Thanks for watching
In the future, I’ll start doing 3 minutes on other tarp shelters. One of my favorites dates back to the French and Indian war. Hate to sound old, but I always seen it drawn or done, well…wrong. Hoping to present a better version, like with the canoe shelter. Stay tuned.
i think you'd almost be better off with gunwale curtains that attached inside the gunwales and staked to ground. almost like a large inverted spray skirt
It’s actually 5mx4m it would hold 6 scouts to sit and warm up with hot liquids. But sleeping space wise it comfortably holds 2 adults. Thanks for watching.
I’ve used everything on this shelter from the biggest canvas drop cloth Sherman Williams paints sells (sealed with Thompson Water seal) to the one in the video which is a marine grade nylon 12x15 foot...maybe bigger I can’t remember. Where to get it is hard. Not too many people have the means to sew something that big. But no reason you couldn’t do just a poly tarp that’s big. I would google dining fly’s.
@@RobinLauer you can get an Equinox tarp 12x16 for $120 it's a syl tarp and will work, I've done variations of tarp shelters like this without the canoe. This is a great video as well
@@Snowalker13 Thanks, I'm trying to make a canvas rain fly to match my small canvas wall tent. I tried the painters tarp with Thompsons Water Seal, didn't work, leaked badly, it needs a tigher weave imho. Trying to get away from plastic tarps.

It’s Marine grade rip stop nylon. Jane Barron, Alder Stream Canvas made it years ago. Sadly she doesn’t make them anymore. It’s about 16 foot by 14 foot

I'm really enjoying these videos! Short, to the point, no bs, packed with good info!
Wonderful! Thankyou. I'm on it now, here in Australia.
Yes. Hello Down Under! I just added Australia to my shipping lists because so many great adventures live there. Thanks for watching!
Another tool for my toolbox, thank you.
Thanks Lisa! I'll have to give that one a try.
This may be the coolest idea I've seen in awhile, thank you!

Looks like a nice simple and sturdy setup, should cope with the Scottish weather nicely. Will be giving it a try this weekend 😀
