I've been banging around the woods for a little bit and have never seen a setup like that. Way better than a typical canoe on its side and with no more materials. Thanks for your videos!

Chris, thanks for watching. I’ve never seen it anywhere either. Been using it for 20 years. Yes the version where the canoe is laying on its side seems like the canoe takes up more usable space and makes the shelter. I’ve also set it up with two wrist sized sticks if you are worried at all about using nice paddles.

    EXCELLENT.
This is exactly what I want. simple, minimal, lightweight, quick, fantastic open end for looking outside, easy closedown for weather protection..
Thinking of making a smaller sized version. but Sewing a triangle shaped Groundsheet in. sewn down along the 2 long sides. design it so sides over the Canoe - from stern to bow, before Canoe is raised up. so totally inclosed . just closedown the front when required.
Making it a Incredible dry, warm and comfortable tent.
    🤗🤗😁😁😁🛶🏕🏞

Graham, so glad you can see the power of the design in the setup. The canoe laying on its side is more in the way than actually integral to the entire set up. Love the creative enthusiasm it has sparked. 😎

      @@Mainepolingguide thanks lisa.
I meant to say slide instead of side .. so yes having the canoe raised as you demonstrate
and yes I totally get experience the "power" of the set up
      its
      absolutely SOILD
      weather proof and adaptable
      give me
      COMPLETE PEACE OF MIND
since I did this comment last year, I've done this set up 3 times now on canoe camping trips, and YES it's a 1000× better function experience and shelter than a tent, bivvy or just a tarp shelter.
in bad weather you can still carry on with all the tasks - cook, wash, repair, adjust, make kit ,
fire wood is keep bone dry,
and a oil lamp hung at the entrance looks absolutely beautiful from inside looking outside
every Paddler and camper should/ needs to watched your videos and apply
      and ...
YOU could definitely SELL the KIT you demonstrate - canteen/ kitchen
tarps, leather bags/sacks, paddles with the leather shealths, Axe, saw etc etc
      all pertental MERCHANDISE !!??
you "know a guy who knows a guy", that can make the kit ( blacksmith etc,
the tarps are so easy to make on a sewing machine ..
and you can have the products
ALL under your very own brand name and your logo ..
folks would seriously buy the kit
you demonstrate from you... because it does the job BAMB
lots of kit out there for sale can be gimmicky and fail..
how about doing a series of videos actually setting up a camp and cooking,
      in a BIG RAIN storm,
to really demonstrate and get across just how efficient and affective important your "order" and "systems" of the camp set up is and works.
      eg -
1st video - setting up the main tarp
      because
in your job, you cannot afford to mess around and have things go wrong, especially in bad weather
I've seen disasters with other paddlers campsites- tarps tents etc get blown away
like a wet fart in the wind, when a strong rain storms comes in at 3am
or they can't get the canteen/ kitchen together properly- half cooked or burnt food.
      food poisoning.
and things go very wrong very quickly out there
so I've watched and applied all of your methods and had fantastic success enjoyable fun and ecstatically happy times canoe camping 🏕🛶🏞👍
thank you for sharing your lifes precious and extremely valuable knowledge with us .
      and the laughs 😅
      and yes so much enthusiasm

@@grahamfisher5436 thanks so much, I’m so glad you’re actually using it. Yes, in a storm with the lantern inside, it’s lovely. I have been meaning to, and will sometime film a set up in the rain on an overnight. The suggestions and enthusiasm you canoeists have inspires the next video a lot. Thanks for watching

In the future, I’ll start doing 3 minutes on other tarp shelters. One of my favorites dates back to the French and Indian war. Hate to sound old, but I always seen it drawn or done, well…wrong. Hoping to present a better version, like with the canoe shelter. Stay tuned.

i think you'd almost be better off with gunwale curtains that attached inside the gunwales and staked to ground. almost like a large inverted spray skirt

This is fantastic Lisa ....is that a 4m x 4m tarp please? Do you think you could get 6 scouts in there! :-)

    • @3_Minutes_With_a_Maine_Guide
      @3_Minutes_With_a_Maine_Guide  Рік тому

It’s actually 5mx4m it would hold 6 scouts to sit and warm up with hot liquids. But sleeping space wise it comfortably holds 2 adults. Thanks for watching.

I’ve used everything on this shelter from the biggest canvas drop cloth Sherman Williams paints sells (sealed with Thompson Water seal) to the one in the video which is a marine grade nylon 12x15 foot...maybe bigger I can’t remember. Where to get it is hard. Not too many people have the means to sew something that big. But no reason you couldn’t do just a poly tarp that’s big. I would google dining fly’s.

@@Snowalker13 Thanks, I'm trying to make a canvas rain fly to match my small canvas wall tent. I tried the painters tarp with Thompsons Water Seal, didn't work, leaked badly, it needs a tigher weave imho. Trying to get away from plastic tarps.

    • @Snowalker13
      @Snowalker13 3 роки тому +3

@@RobinLauer the trick to that is to wash the tarp in hot water and dry it hot, it shrinks it and tightens the weave, also a better choice is to use egyptian cotton sheets the highest thread count you can. I make my tarps that way for 18th century re-enacting search my channel you may find some tips. Good luck Im also a guide in NY & Maine

It’s Marine grade rip stop nylon. Jane Barron, Alder Stream Canvas made it years ago. Sadly she doesn’t make them anymore. It’s about 16 foot by 14 foot
