There is Psycho II and then the Godfather II😂 It is the best film other than the original. Psycho 4 was decent as well because you get more of his background.
I agree. Though many have not seen it because it was released over 20 years after the original and most people thought it would just be a money grab. But it was well done and had a different angle on it. And had a lot of freaky "voyeur" type moments.
The thing that really made Psycho II stand out is not just that Norman is sympathetic but that Lila is now the villain in a lot of ways. It's unique to see the idea of the final survivor turning around and being vindictive and what is extra intriguing is Lila has every right to feel the way she does. This guy murdered her sister and nearly murdered her and yet the movie makes us completely side with Norman.
And the sequel changes Lila from the sympathetic, caring sister of murder victim Marion Crane in the original, to a harsh, unlikeable vigilante in the sequel. That makes it easier to justify her violent slasher movie demise for the sequel audience. As the director of Psycho ll admitted, when he said How do you top the shower scene in Hitchcock's classic - a hatchet in a hot tub? In the original, the audience didn't want Lila to go into the fruit cellar when hiding from Norman. In the sequel, there's no suspense or concern about Lila snooping around and some guys laughed out loud after her slasher style killing.
I love that Tarantino is exactly how you'd expect him to be. You can imagine him at the video store in the 80s talking exactly like this. You can imagine spending the weekend at his home and him talking exactly like this. He doesn't seem like a lofty rich celebrity artist, he's just genuinely passionate about movies and filmmaking.
Anthony Perkins is one of he greatest horror actors of all time. He played a very similar character to Norman Bates in a "The Fool KIller" (1965). I only saw The Fool Killer because it was a movie QT recommended in his Video Archives Podcast. I have seen it 3 times now and it's neck and neck with Psycho II for his second best performance After Hitchcock's Psycho.
I hadn't seen Psycho II since I was a teenager in the '90s, but it was one of my re-watch lockdown movies during 2020. It was even better than I had remembered it, and definitely appreciated it more as an adult.
Nice video - excellent points from Quentin about this sequel, which turned out much better than anyone expected - and very good point about this performance from Perkins being one of the top horror performances ever
Brilliant film. Other sequels should take note. Using the originals character and trying to do something different with them and developing their story. Rather than rehashing the original.
And that shovel scene was most appreciated by the sequel fans, one of them admitting he couldn't stop laughing. I get it. It's a different audience for pulp sequels than it is for original classics.
I remember it playing over over and over on HBO, in their early days when they didn't have a ton of movies. My sister worked at Hardee's, and she brought home a sack of like 20 cheeburgers. We watched this movie while scarfing down cheeseburgers. When you're 14, that's a really cool night.
This movie was amazing and amthony perkings gave a wonderful performance Before watching it, i was expecting to be dissapointed instead i was so invested in the story that ended up liking norman, and then the ends came Great great movie
Yes i think Richard Franklin did a excellent job on Psycho II and i recently picked up another one of his movies LInk from 1987 thats really good also, but i think Psycho II was the first movie i bought on VHS back in the 80s.
I know people who say "They shouldn't have even tried to make a sequel to one of the greatest movies ever made..." or "No way I will EVER see this crap". Yet personally I loved PSYCHO II better than the original. I actually saw it as a kid when it was on Pay TV years before I saw the first film.
All the actors in this film are fantastic!!! Great directing and a great story!!! One of my favorites!!! My dad took me to see it when I was 14 after much pleading!!! I remember Siskel and Ebert torching it!!!
The plot is the key to the success of Psycho II. There were multiple shockers and twists and an expansion to the old lore. That’s why it is still beloved till today. A worthy sequel which some would argue, is even better than the original.
I really loved this movie when I watched it, so much that I was scared because I thought Is this even better than the first one? And until today I didn't dare watch them together and make sure my assumption was right.
I met Quentin at Dublin airport years ago at a boarding gate when he was just about to leave eire. He was very approachable, funny, pleasant & took the piss out of me cockney accent! Spot on PSYCHO 2 review too 😊 👍🏿
Red Letter Media did a review of film series and they were pretty positive about the second one and it got me into watching Psycho 2. It is a really great sequel.
"Back in the 80's Psycho was even more revered than it is today and Hitchcock was definitely more revered than he is today" Huh?? I don't think the film or the director has lost anything in the way of praise since the 80's. Both are still held in the highest regard by lovers of cinema today.
Undoubtedly, Hitchcock is still held in the highest regard but obviously Psycho 2 was made just 7 years after his last film and 3 years after his death. So it's a fair comment from Tarantino here but, it's noticeable his tone towards Hitchcock does seem off which i've heard from him before. Which tbh i don't like. But that's up to him.
@@danselector3694 He doesn't really like Hitchcock or Ford and thinks Welles' films are OK. He hates the 400 Blows too. Of course he has his own taste but let's just say it's far from mine. His criticism of Ford for his acting role in The Birth of a Nation and for his attitude towards Indians is so far off base it really makes me question his sanity. I will go into it if anyone wants.
@lansesteiner3563 Not entirely sure why my comments are being removed. The scene I am referring to is when Norman asks the old lady in the kitchen, "are you sure you wouldn't like a sandwich?" 👍
The best part of Psycho II is its totally believable premise: Yes, a judge would release Norman from custody after he was judged sane by psychologists.
Fabulous film. I probably prefer it to the original. Goldsmith's score is inspired (and supposedly left Anthony Perkins in tears because it so poignantly reflected the tragedy of Norman Bates' story).
Good to read a comment from someone who agrees about how Lila Crane in the sequel was deliberately made to be unlikeable, coarse, unsympathetic. So when she is killed it's more like a cheap, exploitative slasher movie. She's no longer the sympathetic, caring sister of Marion Crane from the original. When I first saw the sequel at a theater, there were audible laughs from adolescent males when she is offed. Contrast that with the shower scene and how people were in silent shock mode since they weren't conditioned to enjoy/laugh at that murder - as they were in the sequel. The original is a cinematic classic and the sequel is derivative pulp.
The Part when the BoyFriend gets killed in front of his Girlfriend in the Basement was so Creepy and Also When Norman was looking up at his house and sees a Woman in the the window staring back at him and he goes up to the house to see who it is was also Creepy Good Scary Movie and also Part 3
It's crazy to me, that everything Quentin likes, I felt the same way. I thought Psycho II was totally underrated. He's right we were ROOTING for him. Then in the end you are like NOOO
I always loved this movie. I agree with Quentin. Who cares if it is a sequel or a copy. If I am entertained that's good enough for me. Copyright is the Right to Copy.
To offer some perspective, the director of Psycho ll, Richard Franklin, had the integrity to say How do you top the original Psycho and the shower scene alone? A hatchet in a hot tub?
I thought maybe I had been mispronouncing Jeannot Szwarc's name, but then I heard Tarrantino pronounce Robert Loggia's name and thought maybe he's not the expert on movies some people seem to think he is.
"Psycho III" (1986), directed by Perkins himself, is even better, smarter, and more outrageous -- beginning with the cry of a novitiate in the darkness: "THERE IS NO GOD!!!" Then the movie plunges into... not "Psycho" but "Vertigo."
But Hitchcock IS revered as much as ever. The San Francisco Symphony on this October 31, 2024 is screening Psycho on a movie screen with the live accompaniment of the complete iconic Bernard Herrmann score - played in sync with the original classic.
Psycho II is one of the best sequels ever made.
You've seen it?

"Aliens" holds the Title.
That’s a stretch it’s predictable and nothing making it stand out that bring it into talks a a best anything .
Psycho II and III are both great movies. Highly underrated. Quinton nailed it when he said we was rooting for Norman to stay sane and be well.
I agree. I love both sequels. Anthony Perkins is one of my favorite actors.

I don’t know how many times I watched this movie on HBO in the 80’s.

Way better than it had any right being to be honest !

One of the VERY BEST MOVIES!
The Psycho sequels proved what a good actor Anthony Perkins was. Decent director, too.
Norman introducing Mrs Spool to the shovel is a truly unforgettable scene. Tarantino is right, we did want Norman to be ok.
I bought Rio Bravo on dvd cause of Quentin’s recommendation.
