I have 3 of these as a 3.1 system hidden , golden ears subwoofer and 2 dolby atmos speakers of golden ears and they all together sound absolute fantastic.
The whole 3.1.2 system is incredible

They've been known to sound good :) Heard them myself. I was impressed. It was used together with McIntosh amps.

Would these be like a Sandy Gross reiteration or follow on to Def Tech speakers of yore? I love my older Def Techs but not sure about the current line up.

For stereo NO, for home theater YES.
The lfe sincronises the bass modules with the surround sistem.
