Off-grid Pond Construction. Challenges and Failure

- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- My favorite project on my Off-grid property turned into a big challenge with some steep learning curves. I began to question whether this was worth all of the effort I was putting into it.
This is where I purchased Rock on a Roll the granite like pond liner. www.rock-on-a-...
I have been taken off guard and surprised by youtube subscribers wanting to donate to help me develop my property here. My belief is that such wonderful gestures shouldn’t be shunned in anyway. Can you imagine you refusing to open your presents at Christmas? I simply want to do whats right. Music by Bensound.com
Some have requested to make donations to my off grid living project. Many thanks.

You can turn a plain old tall clay pot upside down than put another pot on top with mud at the bottom to plant the tubers for lilies, and just a couple is all you need, that and some plain old cheap goldfish, cause they are carp related fish and are bottom feeders that eat algae as well as the water bugs, and you are good to go.
Excellent suggestions. Thanks so much for following my pond journey here.
Thanks for sharing your journey Don, all the best cant wait to see the pond in action
Thanks so much for watching Michael Devlin! Always great to see you here.
Flex glue is serious stuff. If you're interested you should check out their other products like flex tape, flex seal, and flex seal liquid. They're all supposed to work under water, it's kind of their signature feature.
Super information! Thanks a ton!
I am 55 years old and I am planning to move to Arizona to retire because I lost everything during Covid I’m starting over have become a truck driver at 55 crazy right. Anyway I know Land there in Arizona is very reasonable I want to get between 20 to 40 acres and build my own home

Wow! where was the Tilly? you will only sunburn the top of your head one time in life. I promise that is something you will never forget. Thanks for sharing the the highs and lows of this journey. It takes a special person to look at it laugh and go on with it. Have a great week. God Bless.
Thanks for caring Rodney! The Tilley kept getting caught up on the mesquite tree so I took it off during parts of the build. But that is rare overall.
Don, maybe think about using a big round livestock trough, also may need to make a filtration setup to keep it clean.
Great idea
itskarl1799 I really like those suggestions. Excellent and thanks for watching!
@@affordabledesertliving3487 Or oxygenate it and make an ecosystem with fish? Cool project.
IMO,, use a Metal Tank ,,and it doesn't have to be Deep ..Oh how can birds drink with nothing for them to stand on next to the water edge ?
Dan you will see in the design that the upper waterfalls has small pools designed for bird drinking and bathing.
@@affordabledesertliving3487 I forgot about the waterfall.. PS they do also make plastic tanks that will work for years.
Good luck to you. Dan

Whoah Tim... Man if you knew then what I know now you wouldnt even think of it LOL. You would be begging those girls to do a different game like jacks or hop skotch or something. LOL.
You might need to concrete the interior of your pond, then seal it with a nontoxic concrete sealer & then use the pond liner. You could have a burrowing critter compromising the pond liner & the concrete should keep it out. Glad to see you're back.
Super suggestions Larry! Thanks for watching!
yes, some of us are old enough to remember Mr Rogers, especially those of us who grew up near Pittsburgh. Don, the pond looks great and I bet you figure out a fix for the leak. as for the dust, you will never eliminate the dust in the desert but there are a few things to try to reduce it: add an inline water filter, cut up some fake grass mat to lay around the pond perimeter, build a rock wall wind break on the side of the prevailing wind.
jrp616. Many thanks for your encouragement and tips. So appreciate you being here and watching.
That is so nice Don it will attract all the wildlife in the place your in you might find Turtles wanting be in your pond there a man that lives near you they found one of those big turtles on the road they took to a recuse place there so don't be surprised on that i was one of those big big turtles Your problem maybe put more rocks around the edges just lay on the ground near that as will stop the dust getting in the pond ok now second problem you have to cement the bottom of the pond fill in the pond half way ok with dirt and make it all cement that is what my dad did you be ok its the only way to fix it no liner ok all cement you don't need the pond that deep to 2ft is deep enough the deepness you go there you can have a swim in it my did our pond its about like yours but he only went 2 ft deep it was suppose to be for ducks then they flew away the he had the small turtles in it one side the pond was deep and the other side the turtles could come out and walk around was covered with bird wire on the top as we had cats trying to get them dont know if you do that but really why so deep with yours ?
Yeah Kriss I built one super fast in Ceduna, South Aus out of a store bought turkey baster LOL. Seriously...

Do you have indoor plumbing? Nice they have water delivery.
Hi Elaine. No indoor plumbing. Most cooking is done outside and I have a compost toilet etc.
Great stuff Don !!! I will be building mine next spring.. so many projects here. Have a great week my friend !!
Wow that sounds so super that you are going to build one as well. Your always welcome to email me if you like and compare notes etc.
Oh❤❤❤‼️ the birds!!! God gave me a dream one time about the Holy Spirit descending on me(like the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus), and it was a beautiful little bird that was all the colors of the rainbow..and I woke up and thought, does that bird really exist!??? After googling for over an hour I found it!!!! It is a Texas Painted Bunting!!!🦚🕊🦚
What a beautiful dream Jane! Our Father in Heaven. The giver of good gifts! I used to live in TX and Painted Buntings are common in certain regions! Love that species. The varied bunting is harder to see so imagine my excitement when it shows up to drink!

What about evaporation?
omega royal. Yes that is definitely part of the maintenance and upkeep of having a water feature like this. They are never totally on auto pilot for months on end. Just like a swimming pool some upkeep is part of it.
Good luck with your pond , I have a pool and I learned everything in the air goes to the pool I am still learning since1997 , papa Jim's is a. Aquatic center he has a natural filtering system as for as the dust I deal with it 3 to 4 times a year love you man and your wI life pond

😄😄😄😄😄 Your so funny!!! Mr Rogers! Serious is overrated.
Judy yep I agree. Cant be too serious for sure. Just not my nature. I don't take myself all that seriously anyway.
Hi Don, sorry that your pond didn't turn out. I
Want to give you a couple of ideas. 1 use a kiddie pool of course you have to refill the pond .. 2 cement it and seal it .
Doris many thanks for your suggestions and your faithful watching of my videos.
I made a pond in my garden , had the same problem with mice . So I place rock step in the pond , know it helps the frogs. I also fill the pond with ping pong balls , they float on top of the water to help water from vaporing. I also plant rhubarb and big leave plants to cover the pond.
mary great advice and many thanks for your comments!
Great focus and devotion to your dream, you can only stop yourself, no challenge ever will.
wise words indeed The Ramblin Georgian!
Watch the water level till it stops dropping. That is the level the leak is at. Good luck!
Good tip Bill ! Thanks!
To clean pond you might need to keep your pound with swimming pool chemicals
Thanks for your suggestion tracy but I am leaving it all natural.
your a beautiful person - thank you for being yourself and sharing with us #peace
Tim Kat. That is so sweet. You're going to make me cry... but in a good way.
Sad to hear... I know these vids are after the fact... If future leaks occur, maybe try a plastic cattle water trough... Reconfigure the hole to accommodate the shape and depth of the trough and decorate the perimeter with stones, keep the water fall as it is... Excited to see some game pictures...
super insightful comment. Thanks Rooster!
Hi Don,
Sorry I didn’t understand your response message !
I think it was another viewer who responded not me. Thanks for your kind comment and I so appreciate you
Hi Don, if the liner is giving you a hard time. Try doing concrete, it might be some more work but you'll be sure it's completely sealed and it's easy to get a broom and wash it out if it ever gets dirty. Just a suggestion, but I would love to see the end result regardless of what you choose to do. Thank you for sharing your project with us.
Good suggestions Jody. Thanks! Really appreciate your support. All the best!
Don , your doing great job , its looking very nice. Soon , we all know you'll work out all those bumps on your pond road , then you'll have beautifull desert life to emjoy. Love your project , inspirational.

preciousmet1 Lovely and encouraging comments! Thanks!
I had a good chuckle Don! Yes you are retracing my pond experience nearly to a T.
I am guessing that you are losing water at the cut for the hidden pump hose or else from the spillway. I learned to trace leaks by wet soil.
I never worried about soil in the pond because the soil drops as sediment and after a year the pond clears up naturally. But we had leaves in the fall so after leaf drop I would get my hip waders on and use the back side of the rake to remove them plus 31 goldfish make a heck of a lot of muck on the bottom. Stinky job but somebody had to do it. I played around with my pond for 17 years. I layered in front with stones to eliminate the well like look and make the pond a bit more natural looking. But the pond will clear over time and have its own natural water color from the environment.
You certainly had your own serious pond adventures Michael! Thanks as always for watching!
@@affordabledesertliving3487 Yes Don I started out using shallow well pumps from Sears at $250 a pop. I burned through two of them before I switched to sump pumps. I finally killed a sump pump on then I switched to a pond pump in a filter box filled with bioballs. I also had a UV light set up to kill algae. Eventually it died. In the end the little pump was great. Cheap to replace and I always had the sound of the waterfall. Water stayed clear most of the time. I had cool homemade heatlamp for winter. Worked great. I never ever fed my fish. Just rocks an plants to provide all the nutrients and shelter.
I gotta admit, I laughed my ass off when you cleaned out the mud on the bottom.
I'll do just about anything to entertain my mates. Cheers and thanks for watching.
I liked the video thank you ha ha

You have a great singing voice, plus a rather good sense of humor that helps you step back, think and get back to it. Honestly I think coyote is teaching you. If you can laugh at what is going on and yourself, you'll always be ok.
So far coyote has taught me not to step in certain places with a big pile of stuff LOL. But your comments are so affirming and I was so heartened by them!
Hi Don
If it wasn't for bad luck , you would have no luck at all.losing water after all your hard Work must be disappointing . You will find the leak maybe hose .

Cliffhanger, oh no! Lol
Yep I don't do many of those though... (scratches head) I think anyway.
Don, how long have you been hiding this from your audience? Obviously some time, but oh, what a challenge!
The insect life will attract the birds, birds, predators and so you have initiated the cycle of life. Awesome project, looking forward to the finished product.
I doubt there is anything you can do to stop dust except, perhaps encourage more vegetation around the perimeter of the waterhole, but then you hide it from observability...however, mother nature has a way of rewarding those who help her.
Thanks for the journey, wish I could help. Rich.
Hi Rich thank you so much sincerely for all of your interest in my channel. It's such a delight to have you here! Thanks for your kind heart hoping you could help. Thanks Jack so glad you enjoy the videos! Lots more coming!
Pond looks great Don! I have one similar in size and put it in back in 1994 when I first bought my home. I'm sure you've found your leak by now...the water level will have dropped down and shown you what level to look for it. Hopefully it wasn't at the bottom and all that water went adios.
Thanks so much Jay! Great to have you here.
Now my curiosity is piqued! I was thinking, completely unrelated, if you combined geocaching and birding. Gives you a reason to get out and about and see wildlife at the same time.
Once you get a basic knowledge of birding it becomes an incredibly fun sport. Just no end to things to learn and experience.
As a professional builder of many water features let me say you need to start with a EPDM rubber liner. I really prefer to have it all in one piece but the falls can be separate and overlap. Available on Amazon but for less money you may be able to buy a remnant from a roofing company. Get it at least 2' wider in all dimensions than you think you need. Don't cut it to fit exactly. Fold over the excess and bury the edge. This way you don't have a cut edge that can tear and also gives you a little extra to work with later. Please ignore the advice to concrete the pond- this will just create more issues. To seal the waterfall use Great Stuff expanding foam. Use less than you think you need to start. Have rubbing alcohol handy to clean it off your hands BEFORE is sets up. Touch it up with camo spray paint in the tan color. Just going with the black liner gives a 'bottomless' effect that is more natural and easier to clean. The waterfall area will grow a nice layer of slime on it eventually that looks fine.
Evan I so respect and appreciate you taking the time to evaluate my waterfall pond construction and offer such valuable comments. Many thanks!
My god Don.That was a series of mishaps .It`s enough to make a lesser man give up, but not our intrepid and tenacious Don .I admire your persistent determination to conquer to pond.I feel sure that you will succeed in your endeavour`s and look forward as usual for your next concluding post. ATB

September 21st and already 900+ views! I’ve been wondering when you’d upload another. I ALWAYS enjoy your videos a great deal. You’re soft spoken and so easy to listen to. Also you’re not obnoxious as many are IMO. when I was a kid one of the banks had a very nice waterfall outside of their drive through bank and kids thought it was great fun adding a box of laundry detergent which produced a HUGE mountain of suds. The bank would clean it up only for it to get the detergent all over again. The bank finally just planted flowers.
Bud these are such lovely words of encouragement. I am truly warmed by them. Thank you! I can really empathize with the poor bank and their fountain.
😮😢… you’ll get it fixed 👵🏻👩🌾❣️
Yep Its definitely fixed and no end to creatures visit.
After all that hard work, I know, my rubber ducky and myself would be soaking in there. My buddy used an old fiberglass boat and sunk it into the ground. With a pump and filter instant hot tube, minus the hot.
Thats a great way to recycle a fiberglass boat Slartibartfast70!
Hi. Don't k hope you are doing OK. Great two see you are doing a great job on your pond. Take care UK James.
Thanks as always for stopping by James!
Yeah, I had a pond too, in Phoenix, so if you want to have a balanced pond, no stopping the wind or the mud, just got to scoop now and again, but in order to balance the water, to keep it clear you need water plants, like lily's and other water types of plants available at Lowes and Home Depot, and a few fish too because of mosquitos, which you don't want, so you need ledges for the plants.
Great suggestions. Thanks!
I enjoyed watching the pond build take care Don .
Thanks so much Tim! Stay tuned more pond video coming up.
Don - I might suggest adding a way to allow creatures to escape when the pond is low. The sides may be too slippery for them. I call the escape ladders "rescue rocks" in my pond.
This has been a repeating suggestion that I can't ignore for sure. Excellent and I do not mind in the least suggestions like these that will benefit wildlife. Thanks so much for watching Ontogeny!
Hey Don, it's so great to be able to watch these videos and see what you're up to. How do you keep the pond filled with water? I'm assuming you have to add to it manually and if so, how much and how often?
Delighted you are watching my vids Tamara! A dedicated friend for sure! Great question re: the pond. A lucky engineering break came to me quite by accident first of all. I chose to build the pond under a mesquite. That makes it more attractive I think and also what is really super is that it is shaded from harsh sun for a good part of the day. So evaporation is not as much as one would think. It drops about an inch every 4 or 5 days roughly. I have a hose that is connected to my water tank so I top it up once a week or so. I am not sure how much I add in gallons. The pond holds about 450 gallons and its 30 in deep. So the answer (not good at math here) is not that much. Because of the great rains and free water from the sky with my rainwater harvesting system there hasnt been any additional cost to do this since about June 1.
well i believe you may have made this thing to big... i would say next time use a horse trough as your base... check out tractor supply... it would be easier and simpler... good luck u will figure it out
Thanks for your good wishes and encouragement lee. Cheers!

If I build one I think that it would need to have a low point drain so I could just wash everything down the drain in an easy session! Just my two centavos! Good work.

The pond came out so beautiful..can't wait to see the next video to see how things worked out.
