Its time to install the 5.3 LS into my Jeep Wrangler LJ! In the last video, we pulled out the old 4.0 engine and prepped to install the new engine.
For those who are new to the channel, I am installing a 2006 Gen3 5.3 LS engine into my Jeep. The goal is to keep this budget friendly, while still being an amazing swap. In the first few videos, i tore down the engine to do a good cleaning and inspection. The followed up with a few new parts and a nice Camshaft from Texas Speed.
In this video, its time to take a look at some of the transmission modifications that are needed to run this 4L60E with the Jeep 231 Transfercase.
I chose to go with the Advance Adapters Kit. They have been making parts for this swap for a very long time, and they have got it down to a science!
The Advanced Adapters kit comes with everything we will need to make this transmission work. Not only does it allow us to bolt up the transfercase, it allows us to use the GM VSS (Vehicle speed sensor) that is needed for the GM computer. We will still be using the speed sensor on the Jeep Transfer Case for the Speedometer too.
Like I mentioned, AA sends a new 27 Spline tcase input shaft so it matches up to the transmission. That install will be shown in another video since we still have to install the Advanced Adapters Slip Yoke Eliminator at the same time.
AA also makes another adapter option. They sell a 23 spline kit which replaces the Transmission output shaft, this has to be installed by a transmission shop (or a very knowledgeable transmission friend), this is due to the fact that the transmission has to be fully opened up to install it. This kit can be a good idea if you plan on getting your transmission rebuilt anyways. The 23 spline kit is slightly stronger and gives you a shorter overall length (Great for you TJ owners).
Next up it was time to get the LS Swap engine mounts ready. I wanted to use the Advance Adapter mounts, however they require a 4" lift since they keep the engine lower for better Center of Gravity. I don't really want to lift the jeep any higher, so i decided to try out the Holley Hooker engine mounts.
The Holley engine mounts are more expensive, and they do mount the engine pretty high, but they are said to work with minimal suspension lift.
If you plan on doing this swap, then make sure to have a 2 ton hoist at minimum. The 1ton simply doesn't have the depth needed to put the LS engine in the Jeep.
I hope you guys enjoyed the video, please give it a thumbs up and leave a comment.

And a lot of people have commented, yes we installed the Torque converter incorrectly, huge mistake on our part (that’s what we get for trying to make things easier). More to explain on that in the next Swap video. LS Swap Parts List: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1HDpByCdnKh2DDT_qvMAfHqx-NNP5Ww4GvPHhc3pVzDs/edit#gid=0

problems with fords.??..theres more with chev. why dont you fit an nv4500, auto,s are dangerous for 4x4 ing,DOWN HILL,LEDGES. i have a s/duty,4.2tdi,with a ZF 5 sp., first low goes no where,i have to drive it. plus,i dont have d35,s that blow. or your steering brkts that break off.why couldnt you use the chev transfer, your fitting a weak jeep transfer to a 350 hp engine,.not a good thing,at least ford boxes & transfers are built to take the highest hp motor. 460ci 450 hp..theres also clocking rings you could of used. but,im in aus,so you should know best..your next upgrade after being towed back to shop,2 ford s/duty diffs. if,you sold the jeep,& bought a nissan gu,then fitted the LS, you would have no problems with drive train..& a more capable rig..
best place for any 4x4 alternator, top of engine, good for water crossings, dust mud. air intake, please, get a snorkel, with a sock over inlet. you can turn the stock motor inlet round & have the intake in cab..sounds great..
paint it yourself,its only going to get bashed,& paint it white..internationally safe color.easy seen. cost,paint 300,hvlp gun 50.acc 100. undercouat 150. ,,paint shop 2.5k..
Done!
I think u should go with paint and if u want to keep it red I think jk deep cherry red orr 99 xj chilly pepper red
I really appreciate that Cassie and Ben do their own work.
8:41 I sure hope you lined up the torque converter and didn't snug it upto the block with the bolts. If you didn't, you just broke the pump in the front of the trans.
It is so cool to see Cassie working on the her jeep like she is. Best part is when you two talk you both understand what it is all about. Keep up the great videos!
Once you're done you need to make a video that solely covers everything you had to purchase for the swap. I think it will definitely encourage other people to do a swap like this in the future including myself.
um......you installed the converter on the fly wheel first?.......how were you able to seat it into the trans?????.....you may have just crushed the pump !!??
RAPTOR LINER ...I did my 07 jk interior and exterior ... amazing finish, extremely durable for all weather and easy to clean
Did you spray it very fine or very coarse?
@@JS-tb9hu interior was fine, exterior coarse ..dried perfect
When are we installing the supercharger?
Yeah?
YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah Cassie, you have the intake off so you're already half way there 😂
Next video??
YES PLEASE haha
If you must paint it, colored bed liner/raptor liner would be my choice. That way you won’t be afraid to get after it on the trails.
Monstaliner gets my vote, lots of colour options and extremely durable.
Now what color!! Thats the hard part, im not too big of a fan of the textured colors.
Check out their website for colours, I love their predator green and purple people eater.
I monstalined my old tj and that stuff is solid. VERY durable. You can buy a sample chipset of their colors. Their colors online are pretty spot on with how they look in person though.

I love that you guys don't drag it out. You give a really good explanation, but at a nice pace. Not too slow, not too fast. Keep it up!!
My 2006 LJ was in the same boat and needed a paintjob and some rust repair. I chose to go with Raptor Liner in Basalt Gray. It turned out great and really brought the Jeep back to life. I did it in my driveway with an older 30 gal compressor and didn't have any issues.
I vinyl wrapped my TJ. It was a super fun project for my wife and I. It came out really clean. I’ve had it for almost a year now and it’s held up through tree branches and rubber flapper blade drive through car washes. 10/10 would recommend 3m vinyl
enjoy your channel
been a mechanic for 50 years never seen such clean knuckles and finger nails
I'm in the same boat regarding the paint with my 04' Rubicon. I almost pulled the trigger on raptor liner, but had second thoughts. Once it's on there, there's no going back, and I still have good paint on the doors and quarters. I've been leaning towards repainting the troubled surfaces here lately, still indecisive though.
Red raptor liner. Save yourself a bunch of money and it’ll show us what to do for our own.
I second this!
I wonder how much weight the Raptor liner or Line-X or something like that would add over paint. Probably not enough to matter now that you’ll have HORSEPOWER!
Great video. Nice work
I wish my wife liked cars and machines this much.
I wish mine led me that much.
@The73rdSecret Don't we all...
I think of this whole swap, the hardest things for me to do would be the mounts (I have a welder, but I suck) and the electrical. It's nice to see how easy you guys make it look though! There is also a TON of room in that engine bay, which is pretty suprising!
Also, as for painting - 99% of the work is prep. I personally would keep it the same colour (no issues with painting door frames, engine bay, etc) and I would honestly stay away from boxliner just because it is very hard to clean. It always looks good at first, but a few years down the road it looks pretty rough.
You put converter on flex plate then installed it into transmission. There's about a 99.9% chance you broke the oil pump inside transmission. Hope you didnt do this
You could try painting the Engine bay area, since you are taking the engine out to do the welding and see how it goes. Then you can decide if you want to tackle the exterior.
That being said, I’d like to see a diy vinyl wrap or diy matte red liner.
✌🏼
You've already received lots of great ideas here in the comments; my 2 cents are: Whatever you go with, please make it a DIY project. You guys have already done so much yourselves, so a coat of "paint" is not something that's going to stump y'all. I wrote "paint" in quotes because IMHO you should go with RED colored LINER (Monstaliner, Rhinoliner, etc.). Red because it already identifies your Jeep and liner because of its ruggedness out on the trails. Great job and keep 'em coming!
My wife and I literally just got done discussing getting rid her Ford because of all the transmission issues and then Ben had his input. Perfect timing.
You should ALWAYS install the torque converter into the transmission and then bolt the assembly to the engine. You install the torque converter bolts through the starter hole. Doing it the way you guys did it in the video is a for sure good way to damage the pump inside the transmission if it is not perfectly lined up.
Those holley mounts look nice though. Excited to see how everything fits once you get it down in there.
Mounts Look Beefy!!
Good job Cassie! Since you’re thinking about refinishing the outside, how about pulling
the motor one more time and painting the engine bay? The engine looks really nice, it would be a shame to set it in an old dirty engine bay. As far as repainting the body, you and Ben could pull it off!
Keep the stock red. No Raptor liner. DIY in the garage, can't be any worse than the delam paint on it now & probably much better. Good luck!
Love you videos! I am building a CJ8 and putting a LS and 4l60e in it. As for paint, get someone to put a cheap paint job on it. I don’t like the bed liner stuff on the exterior of vehicles. You could paint it yourself but it would take a lot of prep work to your garage so you don’t get overspray on everything.
Exactly, correct me if I’m wrong but bedliner is permanent
@@bigmac22ify It can be removed but it is very difficult and costly. I own a mobile blasting business and mostly blast vehicles. It has to be scraped off then blasted. Blasting is not very effective on rubberized products. It wants to bounce off.
Monstliner!! In either "Read my Lips" or "Lady in Red" you can get color chips send to you to get a feel for the true color.
My buddy used the bed liner stuff on the outside of his Toyota Tacoma and it looks really good. He never worries about scratches on the trail.
It’s best to put the converter in the trans first then double check that the converter is all the way in by spinning it and pushing it in at the same time you should feel it engage on a TH 350 you feel it twice I’m not sure about the newer ones then mate it to the engine
Great Job Cassie!!!!! You're absolutely KILLING IT!!!!
I did raptor liner on my jeep, blue outside, black inside. It sprays easy enough and I liked the quality of it. Been on about 2 years and it still looks good. I can get you some pictures if anyone would like to see it. Only problem I have is that it rubbed off the door hinges. I sprayed at 50 PSI with no thinner.
If I were going to do it again I would thin it out just a bit and spray at 60 PSI. This would give it a finer finish, think 100 grit sand paper vs 60 that I have now. I think this would be thin enough to fit into tighter places without rubbing.
There is a video of a guy on youtube who sprayed an XJ red and did it this way. I would spray it exactly the way he did.
If you're looking to do Raptor Liner, I'd definitely say go that route over paint. But if you have the extra money to burn and you're going that far, just do a full-on Line-X spray.
MONSTALINER!!! jeeps done with monstaliner always look really good. you can get paint chips from them to check the colors you might want. Their chassis saver is incredible too if you need any of that
We painted my CJ7. I have access to alot more shop space than y'all do. I'd probably go with some type of coating for the trail jeep though. Its alot more durable. I've already got some "pinstripes" on the CJ. (Paint is only about 5 months old. Also prep is key. We have a little over 200 man hours in that job.
This is a lot fun to watch. I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing it run. My vote on paint is not to do that. Just do a really cool wrap. That way you can change it up every few years. I'm thinking about that for my Jeep. I've got a 3.8 so looking forward to Ben's Hemi swap.
Advanced Adapters 50-435 worked well for me. Just make sure everything is sealed up with silicone and/or gaskets. I had to remove mine twice for adapter leaks
Just a little note about the angle/clearance Clarence issues with the 1 ton hoist. Thinking outside of the rails; next time you could deflate the tires or take them off completely, giving you the depth needed.
Or a Floor Jack Under front end??
If you want to paint at home you need a massive air compressor, a least a 60 gallon 220 volt. By the time you buy everything you need it may cost the same to have it done some where. What you can do is do the body work, doesn't look like you need much then take it to a shop and have it resprayed. Personally I would go with the same color, it looks good and it matches your valve covers, or it looks that way through the camera.
Raptor line it. Did my JKUR at home in the garage. 24hrs of effort. Lots of prep but extremely happy with the results.
The car accessory drive might be an option for hood clearance issues, I know yours fit but if it didn't that is an option to go with. My LS swap was a lot eaiser than yours, I put an ls in a vehicle that already had a small block chevy and it dropped in easy. It's cool that you would go through all that work to shoe horn that thing in.
Nice, I am not sure what anyone else has to say, but it's nice to see you involved with the upgrade. I am sure you are having fun with the upgrade.
Great progress! As for paint, keep it red. Paint it yourself, one section at a time if need be. Just my suggestion. It's gonna be a long wait 'till next update, looking forward to it.
Happy to see the v8 going in, i wish i could put a v8 in my yj but german bureaucracy unfortunately wont let that happen
Sorry about that lol
Love this! I had no idea that companies were designing parts such as that speed sensor to make specific swaps easier!
Raptor Red looks real good. Spray it on use fine coat looks great.
Raptor liner was cheap and easy. U can pick any color u would like. I did my old the in orange. The stuff is bullet proof!
So cool to see your kids running around in this video
Paint is expensive and can get scratched up. Go with Monstaliner. It's tintable, wont fade like the others, doesn't get chalky, and can be glossy. Totally worth it.
We are actually looking at raptor liner ourselves for my wife's jeep. Going two tone Blue and Black. Would love to see you guys do a raptor liner. I've personally seen great results with people using it, even years later.
Hope I'm mistaken about what I think I saw. Tell me you didn't bolt the trans to the engine with the torque converter bolted to the flywheel. That is a good way to break the pump in the trans. When mating the trans to the engine, the converter should be inserted all the way into the pump on the trans, then after the trans is bolted to the engine, the converter can be slipped forward and bolted to the flywheel. Looking forward to the first start up. God bless, stay well.
Use raptor liner, that's what I did on my TJ. I ended up matching my factory color with the tintable raptor liner so I didn't have to paint under the hood or anything like that. It turned out great.
Currently doing a 6.1 Hemi swap on a TJ and it uses the same mounts. Complete and total PIA to get lined up.
Red raptor liner would look sick. And it would be an easy home project.
I hope you didn't destroy your pump on the transmission. Typically the torque converter is installed in the transmission and then bolted to the flywheel after the engine and transmission are bolted together. Good luck with that.
I vinyl wrapped my Jeep and regretted it since I off-road and the branches scratched and ripped the vinyl everywhere. I liked the color so I had a paint shop match it so I can add it to the tintable raptor liner. I haven’t painted my Jeep yet but I have used it on my wife’s floor pans and fender armor. It’s been a year of serious rock crawling and it’s holding up well.
Anything but pink or black ... the red always looks great
Raptor liner would be my vote! With a new paint job you'll have Pinyon pinstripes in no time
Awesome job! And I do have to say Ben is a lucky guy. Smart, pretty, can turn wrenches, and welds. Damn
They make spray on vehicle wraps now. You can peel it off and change colors at a later time.
Raptor liner would be amazing and I really enjoy the fact that you do it all yourself and not have a team behind you building it for you.(built not bought) Keep up the good work very inspiring.
Cheers
Letting the air out of the front tires is an easy way to improve the approach angle for the install.
I see this has already been suggested.
You would be better taking your jeep to a shop to get refinished. To paint it in your garage will be a ton of work to keep over spray and fumes out of your house. If the body is in solid shape, take to a body shop and ask them what the prep work would be. I know the the paints I have used involve sanding the Jeep with 320-400 grit paper, then spray a sealer then color and clear. The same thing kind of goes with the bed liner, I have sprayed Raptor on the bottom of my truck and it is awesome. I drive through sage brush to get fire wood and it holds up to it. Im not sure how the brush on system looks, but to spray it once again you''ll fight over spray and fumes.
Do not start that engine the way you put the trans on
For paint color I highly recommend rescue green
If you decide to paint your Jeep with a textured paint, you need to use Monstaliner! That stuff is the best and easy to either roll on or spray! I have rolled and sprayed Monstaliner and like the spray texture better! If you want some pics I will be happy to post some for you!
Raptor liner like a desert light brown would look sick or even red
Nobody's perfect. I think you guys are doing an amazing job!
I knew you're full of it when the engine went in. True mechanic is the person under the engine making sure everything lines up ,the other person just lowers or raises the engine with the hoist
DAYUM YOU GOT ME, YOU ARE SO RIGHT-glad I could make you feel more like a man.
Tintable red raptor liner! Love the red and black theme
DIY the paint job. Awesome video. I learn so much from you and Ben's channel. Thank you!!!
Worst part of auto painting is cleaning, sanding, masking, etc...aka prep work. If you've never done it, I'd recommend you start small and just take the hood off and do it separate as a practice piece that doesn't require as much prep work. If you mess up, just sand it back down and try again. Check out TCP Global for a really nice paint selection. I've sprayed a lot of cars, boats, etc with the basic harbor freight paint gun. The actual painting of an entire vehicle is really quick but the other stuff takes almost an entire weekend. I raptor lined my fenders and interior and it has held up well but when it gets dirty, it's harder to clean and water spots are more visible so keep that in mind. If you spray raptor liner, your technique will change the texture so if you aren't consistent you could have half the Jeep feeling like sandpaper and the other half feel like the drop in plastic bedliner. Last...you can paint outside on a calm day and roll it into the garage to dry but park all other vehicles a long way away to prevent them getting overspray.
I’d do the raptor liner in like a military gray.
Definitely the Red Liner, it is tough and flexible and will strenghtne the body panels.
Wow that LS looks so good in there. I have been pondering the idea of an LS swap for my TJ and you all are making it hard to say no. lol . I personally would do a wrap that way you could change it every few years to a different color . Just a suggestion . Looking forward to your next video . Take care and be safe guys.
Please don't raptor line, if its just the clear coat thats messed up just cut and buff and reclear coat at home, if not id personally take it to a shop, but would also love to see ya'll tackle that project in the garage for the viewers! Rock on guys!
Just watch this again for like the fourth time, love the video. But I got to thinking that if it was me, I would’ve pulled the fenders off completely. The last engine swap I did was on a 70 CJ, I put a 360 AMC in it. Fenders off was the way
You're pretty talented Gal - I just ordered a full size Bronco Badlands pretty loaded can't wait to get it but I will be waiting I'm afraid
Go with a vinyl wrap!
Add a blooper or two at the end as well. I’m sure you and Ben have plenty. Lol
Great videos guys. Keep them coming!
I would go with the Berliner, you can get different colors and it will hold up very well.
Definitely tube fenders to get rid of the rust on the fenders. Then raptor line the Jeep.
Raptor liner looks good I did it on my tj and have had it for a while and it hasn’t faded at all and looks awesome
Go with a red liner that closely matches the interior paint color so it doesn't clash when you open the door.
Keep it Red. Have a shop paint it... New Motor, New Trans, New Paint... NEW JEEP!
U can go to a shop, or u can do it at home with youtube help! I used the 23 spline kit for mine in my MJ. Glad I did since I got to learn alot about the 4L60E trans.
Have a professional paint it, not saying that you cant, but it truly is a skill to master.
I say keep the gloss red on the outside and raptorline the inside
4l60 is a boat anchor. People don't like them cause the clutch baskets crack. You need to upgrade the basket if you wanna beat on it. And unless you can do this job yourself, which many can't. You will spend around 10k to have this done. So just do the 6.0 swap and beef the axles and go play.
Hopefully it's not too late, but I was going to recommend paint the engine compartment.
I second the motion on the high lines for front travel and painting at home again stock red.
I think you need to seperate the engine and trans and replace the front pump that you guys probably broke putting them together the way you did. The Converter needs to fully seat in the trans first, then bolt to the flywheel. Then raptor liner the Jeep in red
Go with the Kevlar coating!! Y’all are awesome and much inspiration to my wife and I ...
Looking good. I’m guessing the NP241 will get a slip yoke eliminator? What about reduction gears?
Keep it red, it will match the interior and under the hood. I would love to see you paint it your selves. come on give it a go!
P.S love the LS swap, this is great info for when i do the same to my 06 LJ.
Kind of a bummer the alternator is on the top. That louver lets in all the rain water. Hopefully no issues come from that. As annoying as those motor mounts might have been, i love a jeep with a low lift. LCOG is the way to go. I just painted some full doors to match my jeep. It was pretty easy using the duplicolor exact match. It would be cake on a fender. Just make sure to use Spraymax 3680061 2K Clear. Its worth its weight in gold. Do not use a 1k. Its very easy to do, I would say save the money a shop would charge and do it yourself on that fender.
Yeah hopefully it doesnt become an issue, we will see! Thanks for the tip on the clearcoat
Awesome partnership with the installation.
Go with Raptor liner!! I've done a jeep in that same red and it looks great! When you spray do a 50/50 over lap. Once the whole thing is done go back over with a mist coat and it'll look cherry!! No pun intended 🤣
I rapterlined my yj. I 100% regret it. As I will be scraping the bedliner off and repainting. Here in Wisconsin it will rust from the back and by the time it shows you will have a mess. 2. Bedliner is a pain to keep clean. Gets muddy and you have to scrub it with tire cleaner
we did blue raptor liner on our 07 jku and it turned out great!
See that's what I'm talkin bout. This is the best part about having a 3.8L oil burner. You're FORCED to LS swap I mean Nothin else make sense right? And plenty time to collect parts while adding courts.
Awesome
Hey Cass the Jeep is coming along great, what you and Ben do is fantastic. It really sucks that kaleena and I couldn't come down and hang out with you guys in Virginia at the Jeep jamboree but I hope we can meet up soon. Kaleenas 9 months pregnant and my son will be here any day now. I think you guys moved farther away but I think we still might make the trip and I could definitely use both of your opinions on what I should do with my Jeep, generally I always do my own work but at the time I didn't have access to a lift and the jeep dealership messed my Jeep up really bad turning my dream into a nightmare. I'm rambling so keep up the good work bye for now, James.
Congrats!!! Ben and I will be back in the NC/VA area sometime this year. I’ll keep everyone posted on possible travel days!
