Reynolds Number

  • In fluid mechanics, the Reynolds number (Re) is a dimensionless number that gives a measure of the ratio of inertial forces to viscous forces for given flow conditions. The Reynolds number is an important parameter that describes whether flow conditions lead to laminar or turbulent flow. Laminar flow occurs when a fluid flows in parallel layers, with no disruption in the layers. Turbulent flow is a flow regime characterized by chaotic property changes. Real world systems are designed using models to simulate actual flow and analyze these characteristics.

The first song is "Hot Like Sauce" by Pretty Lights. If you like that song, Check out "I Know the Truth," and "Forever Lost" by them as well. Well done on the aero explanation! Here's another unsolicited opinion to add to the youtube consortium: this is technical information and Electric Dance Music (EDM) is similarly technical. Appropriate soundtrack selection!

The presented values of Reynolds numbers to distinction between laminar and turbulent are valid for air without walls. The transition occurs at different values in other conditions (liquids, pipes, etc)

Just because the Reynolds number is less than 10^3 or greater than 10^4 does not alone determine whether the flow is laminar or not.
this also depends on the geometry that the fluid is flowing through.

I have a project where I need to heat large amounts of water (1.2 million gallon tanks) with no electricity or combustible gases. Basically I have large water pumps capable of moving water at 1200 GPM (+) capable of pressures up to 300 psi. They are driven by 350hp diesel engines. I need to convert that mechanical energy into heat. I was thinking via cavitation. I am in no way an engineer and have very little engineering back ground. So any ideas out there? I am looking for someone to help me design a system to take the cold water out of the tank and return it to the tank as warm as possible.

You're looking for artists. Usually Engineers just want to get the point across so the artists can go out and use it for something pretty.
