6 1/2 years later I still love my favorite handsome vampire. Jonathan Frid. I so much had a total crush on him. He was the best looking vampire I had ever seen when I was a young girl. I wonder if he didn't really like Lara Parker the way Lara tells this story . He was a very good romantic vampire.

I was 6 years old when Dark Shadows came to tv.. could NOT watch because the opening music scared me so, I would run out the front door!!😮 Lol
And now, I am sooo enjoying watching this old soap. I've been a ABC soap freak all my life. Was very upset when OLTL and AMC was taken off the air!!But, i have to say, nothing compares to the beauty and professionalism of Dark Shadows.. I am mesmerized by these wonderful actors, storylines, period costumes and sets. It's like watching a stage play..
Such a great old soap. Glad it is still around.
Now they just need to package and sell old AMC and OLTL seasons. ...

Lara Parker is a class act. I love her comment about how 'you don't seduce and abandon a witch' in particular! Thank you for sharing this great interview.

PS: AT THE RISK OF SOUNDING OVERLY SENTIMENTAL, THIS COMING NOVEMBER 9TH, I WILL BE 60 YEARS OLD. WHEN MR. FRID PASSED AWAY IN 2012, MY CHILDHOOD DIED W/HIM. OF COURSE THIS IS NORMAL, TIME MARCHES ON, WE ALL GET OLDER & SOME GET ILL & SO FORTH, BUT TO SEE FAMOUS PEOPLE GET OLD AND FRAIL & EVENTUALLY PASS AWAY, IS VERY DIFFICULT FOR ME. MOST OF MY FAMILY SINCE THE EARLY 1990'S HAS PASSED AWAY SO THIS IS VERY DIFFICULT TO LISTEN TO. FICTIONAL CHARACTERS OF COURSE, BUT ALL THE DS STARS PASSED ACTING WORK IS ETCHED FOREVER ON THE INTERNET & ON DVD. (RIP) TO THE LATE GREAT JONATHAN FRID.

Thanks for this interview. I love hearing her thoughts (and she's so diplomatic about the insults from Helena Botham Carter). Love hearing more about her books.

***** Dude -- Lara Parker was one of the most stunningly beautiful women of her day, and has aged extremely well over the decades. Like rick above said -- you need to get your glasses on.

    • @tideoftime
      @tideoftime 9 років тому

***** Now, I didn't comment on her acting ability/range, merely on her physical beauty (which is great). Acting-wise, she doesn't have a tremendous range, but what she *can* do, she does well, and she also has a good theater-range (which is why she was such a good choice to play a witch on a show like Dark Shadows -- the show was like watching a play, anyway, so she fit well with that format).

***** Okay. I took a peek at your videos. Big whoop. If you're trying to be humorous, you're failing. If you're trying to just be a troll, well then congrats -- I gave you a snack. But otherwise, you're just saying a whole lot of nothing. #ByeFelicia

Excellent interview!! Lara Parker is a favorite "Dark Shadows" performer of mine. However, to say that an actor isn't "very good at remembering lines" is to say that it was not easy to remember lines. Jonathan was a slow study faced with the situation of having to memorizing lines fast. This would be hard for any actor, slow study or not. If Jonathan wasn't "very good at remembering lines" he certainly wouldn't have had the ability to do all the Shakespeare he did. Ms. Parker does not mention that everyone on that show had trouble on occasion with their lines, including the late, great Joan Bennett. The teleprompter became as important an instrument to most of the actors on "Dark Shadows" as their voices or bodies. This didn't make the show bad. On the contrary, it contributed to the charm and appeal of the show!!

Ms. Parker meant Learning "lines" for a performance..with Less than 24 hours Notice. And, as the Main Character..FRID had ALOT of Lines & Long Speeches.. Daily.

her voice hasn't changed, & still seduces me. i was in love w/her when i was a kid, back then. & barnabas was my favorite character. i wanted to b barnabas. even got my dad to buy the ring that he wore & the cane. wish i still had those.
The shadows grow long, as the sun sets to night,
which torments the living, & brings the undead to life.
& keepers of the gloom, forecast not the end,
for the struggles for control, have just begun,
for my sanity that hangs by a thread,
in a dream that imprisons me & knows no end.
my melancholy grows, as the night waxes cold,
as if a dagger were placed, where resides my soul.
barnabas has gone where i dare not yet tread,
for i have miles to go, before i may rest.
& as he has found peace & escaped the unrest,
a mourning takes hold of those he has left.

YES the song is 'Ode to Angelique' written by DS music composer Robert Cobert. On the TV show they implied that the character Bruno wrote the song for Angelique in Parallel Time Bruno was played by the handsome actor Michael Stroka

Yes it is known among older DS fans in the fandom and conventions that Mr. Frid was Gay in his personal life, behind the scenes. Both he and Mr. Edmonds were closeted at the time of the show because back in the day the censors could 'legally' fire anyone if found to be gay and working on a daytime family show. However, Mr. Frid lived his life on his own terms and did what he wanted. He did not officially come out to his straight fans as that would and does break too many hearts , crush the fantasy dreams of the ladies inner child. Also his orientation has sadly caused such heated arguments both on FB and on youtube from very judgmental and un-accepting fans. He didnt want to put up with any haters as Mr. Edmonds did .
Jonathan said he wanted to protect his family, his relatives from such fans. Mr. Frid knew and was friends with many DS fans who happened to have been gay as well. He spoke freely and openly with them.
Mr. Louis Edmonds used to throw some wonderful small dinner parties at his house and he'd invite Mr. Frid and Joel Crothers and later on , actor Keith Prentice. Mr. Edmonds loved to sing and entertain his friends and often they wound up singing show tunes since Mr. Edmonds was also a song n dance man.
Mr. Frid said he struggled to keep the lady fans out of his personal life as he had many, many very obsessive and possessive fans who wanted to be part of his life and they would try to contact and bother his mother and brothers, cousins, back in the day, in the hopes of trying to connect with Mr. Frid. That is also the reason why Mr. Frid does not have a grave, final resting place, because of the crazy fans. He requested to be cremated, without ceremony and his ashes scattered by a trusted friend as an undisclosed location and so the fans would not know where.
