India's population has overtaken China - what does this mean for the world?

  • India is expected to surpass China as the world's most populous nation in 2023. Both countries have more than 1.4 billion people, but where India's population is relatively young, compared to the rest of the world, China's birth rate is in decline and its population is getting older.
What does this mean for India?
By 2047, 1 in 5 people working in the world will be from India, according to India's Century, a report charting a roadmap for India's future, by McKinsey & Company and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry.
Alok Khirsagar, India's Century co-author, highlights the importance of leveraging on India's digital infrastructure to generate jobs for India's young population.
"It's very important that we're able to use technology to distribute manufacturing services into smaller towns and smaller cities, and not as dependent on the large cities to drive growth," he said to CNBC.
He predicts that agriculture, education, logistics, transport, food and small consumer goods are industries that India will provide services for on a global scale.
    How will India's economy benefit?
Manufacturing remains a key industry for India, with companies looking to diversify production away from China due to worker disruptions in Chinese supply chains.
The supply chains of global brands such as Samsung, Apple, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi and Lenovo are also moving to India, Antara Ghosal Singh, an analyst from Indian think tank Observer Research Foundation told CNBC.
"Manufacturing, as a whole, is going to see a boost from the policies that have been taken by the government," she said.
According to the country's commerce and industry minister, Piyush Gopal, Apple hopes to manufacture 25% of all its iPhones in India, up from around 5% currently.
As of 2022, the country has inked 13 regional free trade agreements, which will ensure greater market access for its domestic goods while promoting exports.
Watch the video above to find out more about how India could use its booming population to drive growth.

China is glad to hand over the most populous title to India. China is going through and transitioning to modern high tech society, hard to fill 1.4 billion population with jobs and keep them well fed is another issue. Population decline doesn't necessarily mean that people will have a better standard of living. While a lot of goods and housing will be cheaper but services dependent on manpower will cost more. If China wants to maintain its social security system that pays for healthcare and pensions of the elderly it will have to extract more taxes from its workforce. Currently, the dependency ratio of China 2.2:1, which is set to decline to 1.5:1 by 2050, which means workers will have to either work more or give more tax. High income earners are likely to migrate to other parts of the world where taxes are low. This means the middle class will be burdened with taxes, and the standard of living will not improve a lot.

Most people see population increase = more profit. So, they love the idea of having an increased population. However, they don't see that far ahead. Increasing the population only helps the rich. The rest will just be slaves, especially with the caste system in India. There is not enough land, food and energy for all those people. CO2 in the atmosphere will increase, because we breathe out CO2. This is just 1 out of many problems that comes with increasing population.

One of the main reasons that China was able to succeed on the short term was because of the one child policy which led to greater education and more resources to the new generation. Even worse if keeps growing to 2 billions in near future. That’s why 10 thousand people apply 5 job vacancies and there exist overwhelming endless slums like Dharavi. Over population in india will result in an extremely poor, toxic, and deadly hell! Think about what if American people wake up in the morning and find the # of surrounding houses in community grows 5 folds (i.e., india population = 5 USA population). That will be the end of world. Unfortunately India has just caught the tail of "mass human manufacturing" that lifted China up during the past 2 decades, cheap labor no longer equals to large scale of job creation as many of these jobs will be replaced by robots in next decade, India's population could actually become a burden for its development going forward...

I am Chinese. Let me make a bold prediction. It is not going to happen. By 2030, most manufacturing will be done by robots with AI. And the South East Asia market and population will be large enough and with much higher education than India. It will be the recipients of most jobs leaving China, as China moves up the supply chain. In particular, Vietnam will be the major manufacturing hub for goods shipping out to the rest of the world. You will see huge fleets of trucks running through China and Vietnam borders, and the finished products will have Made in Vietnam stamp and get shipped to the rest of the world.
For India, it will have a small share of the action, with Modi demanding foreign manufacturers to assemble the products in India for India's domestic sale. But that is about it. The manufacturing and logistic, as well as the hostile attitude towards foreign investments by central and local governments, will play a key role in blocking India becoming the major manufacturing giant it inspires to be.

All this is true but a lesser evil than a rapidly growing population as in India. Galloping population of India is an environmental threat & a threat to the world order. It’s landmass, water resources, food growing capacity can’t cope with 1.4 billion people. Chinese leaders who enforced one child policy were wise, they defused population bomb in time. They still have at least a staggering 700M -1B strong workforces to economically sustain for the next decades until the AI and many other matured high end robotics replacing the population declines. This is somewhat a normal transition similar to the industrial revolution in Europe and North America 100-200 years ago.

China is a huge country that needs an external market to park It's savings in order to support It's aging population. Japan is already doing that India and getting It's benefits which will continue to rise in the future. On the other hand China tried to do that through BRI in some countries but is hardly getting any retuns on its investments. Growing hindu nationalism and discrimination against muslins.
The women participation in Indian workforce is extremely low and it is actually decreasing.
What is the point of having large population when half of the working age population won't be able to participate in the economy?
