India's population has overtaken China - what does this mean for the world?

- India is expected to surpass China as the world's most populous nation in 2023. Both countries have more than 1.4 billion people, but where India's population is relatively young, compared to the rest of the world, China's birth rate is in decline and its population is getting older.
What does this mean for India?
By 2047, 1 in 5 people working in the world will be from India, according to India's Century, a report charting a roadmap for India's future, by McKinsey & Company and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry.
Alok Khirsagar, India's Century co-author, highlights the importance of leveraging on India's digital infrastructure to generate jobs for India's young population.
"It's very important that we're able to use technology to distribute manufacturing services into smaller towns and smaller cities, and not as dependent on the large cities to drive growth," he said to CNBC.
He predicts that agriculture, education, logistics, transport, food and small consumer goods are industries that India will provide services for on a global scale.
How will India's economy benefit?
Manufacturing remains a key industry for India, with companies looking to diversify production away from China due to worker disruptions in Chinese supply chains.
The supply chains of global brands such as Samsung, Apple, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi and Lenovo are also moving to India, Antara Ghosal Singh, an analyst from Indian think tank Observer Research Foundation told CNBC.
"Manufacturing, as a whole, is going to see a boost from the policies that have been taken by the government," she said.
According to the country's commerce and industry minister, Piyush Gopal, Apple hopes to manufacture 25% of all its iPhones in India, up from around 5% currently.
As of 2022, the country has inked 13 regional free trade agreements, which will ensure greater market access for its domestic goods while promoting exports.
Watch the video above to find out more about how India could use its booming population to drive growth.

China is glad to hand over the most populous title to India. China is going through and transitioning to modern high tech society, hard to fill 1.4 billion population with jobs and keep them well fed is another issue. With modern society heading towards 4th industrialization and A.I implementation... less is more.
India is already in that phase of 4th high tech industrialisation by jumping from Agro to service sector skipping manufacturing. Its just India is fulfilling the manufacturing gap now with growing population.
@@surojeetchatterji9966 India is in no where close to the Fourth Industrial Revolution (A.I. and machine automation) when India can't even feed it's population. (India is ranked 107th in hunger index). No modern technological society would be in such spot. India's agriculture has not even revolutionized (still farming with cows is not a revolution).
@@surojeetchatterji9966 in reality you are experiencing jobless growth… growth that is fuelled by subsidies & state spending but low job creation due to low FDI (which has been declining since 2018)

@@Fightback2023 There is already semi automation in Indian industry. U have no idea kid. Grow up from ur bubble. Always remember Chinas loss means it is Indias gain. Just like indias loss was gained by sneaky China from 1980s.
Falling population in China is NOT a bad thing. 1 generation has worked and built everything for the next. It doesn't matter if economy shrinks a bit it will only mean better standard of living in future.
Only if they can get people into the country or increase population (which has never worked in history without regression of social and economic standards). The US literally created a generation called baby boomers and opened up immigration to prevent the fate of declining population.
The question is who wants to move to China?
Just see the air quality index of Indian cities today compare it to 20 years ago . what is the point of economy if life survives on air purifier . I am talking about the life of average indian in national capital delhi
@@rex_schdTrue to improve air quality we need to just kill people so economy should not increase.
Population decline doesn't necessarily mean that people will have a better standard of living. While a lot of goods and housing will be cheaper but services dependent on manpower will cost more. If China wants to maintain its social security system that pays for healthcare and pensions of the elderly it will have to extract more taxes from its workforce. Currently, the dependency ratio of China 2.2:1, which is set to decline to 1.5:1 by 2050, which means workers will have to either work more or give more tax. High income earners are likely to migrate to other parts of the world where taxes are low. This means the middle class will be burdened with taxes, and the standard of living will not improve a lot.

Most people see population increase = more profit. So, they love the idea of having an increased population. However, they don't see that far ahead. Increasing the population only helps the rich. @@yetreefield India’s growth is just a few years behind. One of the main reasons that China was able to succeed on the short term was because of the one child policy which led to greater education and more resources to the new generation. And the South East Asia market and population will be large enough and with much higher education than India. It will be the recipients of most jobs leaving China, as China moves up the supply chain. In particular, Vietnam will be the major manufacturing hub for goods shipping out to the rest of the world. You will see huge fleets of trucks running through China and Vietnam borders, and the finished products will have Made in Vietnam stamp and get shipped to the rest of the world.
For India, it will have a small share of the action, with Modi demanding foreign manufacturers to assemble the products in India for India's domestic sale. But that is about it. The manufacturing and logistic, as well as the hostile attitude towards foreign investments by central and local governments, will play a key role in blocking India becoming the major manufacturing giant it inspires to be.

China experts hem & haw about population growth declining in that country. They make dire predications about difficulties China will face due to an aging population. All this is true but a lesser evil than a rapidly growing population as in India. Galloping population of India is an environmental threat & a threat to the world order. It’s landmass, water resources, food growing capacity can’t cope with 1.4 billion people. Chinese leaders who enforced one child policy were wise, they defused population bomb in time. Unfortunately, strutting Indian politicians have no qualms about the misery burgeoning population brings to this country. At this level there is no demographic dividend, only certain demographic destruction.
Do you know, one child policy is against human rights, why are you advising Indian government to violate human rights?😂

What about India's GDP per capita which is still lower than all the countries you mentioned
$125B is Not whopping. It’s peanut when you talk about infrastructure budget for a big country like India.
I believe the gdp you mentioned is for FY ending March 2023. Has not ended yet. About 3.5T

18T economy with 1.4B population isn't a bad thing compared with 3.8T with equally 1.4B population. We can clearly see which one is 800% more prosperous than the other.
You're right bro. Moreover, because of AI and robots, huge population will not be needed in the near future. What do you think?
@@ShyamSunder-yk8zj Agreed. Declining population wouldn't be a disaster for China. They still have at least a staggering 700M -1B strong workforces to economically sustain for the next decades until the AI and many other matured high end robotics replacing the population declines. This is somewhat a normal transition similar to the industrial revolution in Europe and North America 100-200 years ago.
The reason why India's population is increasing is because India is a poor country and they're focusing too much on having as many children as possible, whereas China is a rich country focusing on how to make their own country better
@@collin_mmarshall1655 You're right. I'm planning to move outside India as soon as possible. The future is bleak here.

I have nothing against India but I don't think a large population is a guarantee to economic success. Especially when you take into account AI will replace many jobs (just take a peek at ChadGTP) in addition a bigger population will face an uncertain future due climate change Is India and many countries in the global south ready to confront this challenges?
We already have very few jobs for our population. We are the most jobless nation on earth.

India does not need China, It's China that actually needs India at the moment. China is a huge country that needs an external market to park It's savings in order to support It's aging population. Japan is already doing that India and getting It's benefits which will continue to rise in the future. On the other hand China tried to do that through BRI in some countries but is hardly getting any retuns on its investments. Except for Indonesia and Malaysia almost all it's investments/loans are turning into non assets.

If population size was the only factor then China and India would be 1st and 2nd econmies in world a long time ago. Sadly it is not the case. Government is plays a key role and how does the Indian government compares to China?
Yes, one party rule is far better than democracy 😂
Population alone dont mean advantage, population doesnt equate to human resource, Population is like a gold mine, you need machines, know how, capital and organized to be able to extract the mine, is India able to do that? I am not sure, but ironically the example of China's success give confidence to the world that India might has a chance
I'm indian but I think we will not be able to do that . Our economy is growing but job growth is almost Nil. It's the land of unhealthy competition.
china is moving from cheap factories to automation and high tech. they will be fine with a well educated smaller labor force. india labor participation rate is 41 and china 67. population is a curse if they cant find work.

Large population is not a blessing, it’s a curse. Especially now we are entering the AI age, where jobs will be hard to come by. China’s birth rate is lower than that of almost all countries and China’s population is declining at the right time. I do wish the Indians have more prosperous lives. I hope their economy will grow at the expenses of all the colonial powers.
China’s large population causes severe competition between people😢 I hope less people in future
India's growing population can be a demographic advantage or can be demographic disaster ! .... We need to jeep growing and creating all kinds of jobs .... This is hoing to be very hard as the world now is shifting more and more towards automisation ! .... I don't know how India is going to achieve that but we need to do it and fast ! .... We need an annual growth rate of atleaet 9 to 10 percent in order to achieve that ! .... It is going to be tricky ! ....

The class divide in India is already to absurd. Additionally the caste system works to oppress large number of people.
Growing hindu nationalism and discrimination against muslins.
