I grew up in Adelaide too. I loved going to the Carols by Candlelight in the city and driving through Lobethal to look at the lights. My family always did a big British Christmas “dinner” (at lunchtime): Roast pork, turkey and ham with roast potatoes and boiled veg, gravy, apple sauce, cranberry sauce and Christmas pudding with brandy white sauce (not custard) for dessert. Mum also had a tradition of making “coconut ice” and “white Christmas” confectionery in the weeks before Christmas, and my grandma would make lovely fruit mince pies.
The other place to get Christmas trees (at least in Melbourne) is from the boy scouts. On the Sunday before Christmas, Santa comes down the streets on a CFA (Country Fire Authority) firetruck and chucks out packets of Twisties to the kids.
I’m from Uruguay and I purposely looked this up cause we’re both on the same hemisphere and some things are very similar but our school holidays last three and a half months usually and it is the hole freaking summer. If you don’t have much to do it can even turn boring but you did have all summer to enjoy your toys and would usually be themed around vacation. I lived by the beach and sandboards are classic Christmas presents.
I recall seeing heath ledger on either Conan or Ellen, talking about how he celebrated Christmas in Australia, with shorts, flip flops, and cooking steaks in the backyard. A great Australian, Heath. So under appreciated.
You guys should just celebrate it on YOUR winter solstice… besides Jesus was born in the Summer anyway, or so a lot of people say. This just seems so weird to celebrate it in the summer, to me.
I'm from Tassie. We used to put out food for Santa (milk and bikkies), plus put balls of cotton wool on the Chrissie tree, too. Lunch is certainly still a family roast dinner ... in sweltering summer weather. Heh. And watching the Boxing Day test and the start to the Sydney to Hobart is on the cards as well!
@@candicemoll8386 ABSOLUTELY!! I’m an Aussie too and we start our Christmas lunch with Champagne and Prawns, then relish in a delicious hot Christmas roast as we swelter in the Aussie heat, then pass out in the afternoon before the evening celebration and then all stumble out of bed on Boxing Day -& while I’m not really into Cricket, the Boxing Day test is always on TV in the background (because there’s nothing else on!) & it’s just like tradition! I absolutely love our hot Christmas, it’s so fabulous and fun to party in warm weather and I wouldn’t want it any other way! Merry Christmas!
here in the Pacific Northwest, surrounded by evergreen trees.... we still have christmas tree farms lol. (good thing though, I like our forests and want them to stick around) you can still purchase a permit to go out in the bush and cut one down though, pretty fun!
15:07 Well, you forgot to mention that Boxing day tests traditionally only take place at Melbourne Cricket Ground. which is usually packed with 50,000+ or sometimes even 80,000+ people on the Boxing day. I would like to add more to it. i'm from India and even though majority of us don't celebrate Christmas, Boxing day test is still something most cricket fans like me tune into even though boxing day isn't a holiday here, It is even better if India's playing, more so recently as we have beat Australia in the last two boxing day tests we played (in 2018 and 2020). This time we aren't playing, South Africa is but I alongside many cricket fans will for sure be tuning in to watch the boxing day test.
In Washington State we usually have cold rain (about 42 american degrees which is 4 in Celsius I think) on Christmas instead of snow, last year was one “white christmas” out of the 4 I’ve ever experienced. Our snow in Seattle usually doesn’t start until mid-January
Well "Santa" does come with raindeer until he touches Aussie ground then he switches to roos as they can deal with the Aussie heat then when he leaves he picks his raindeer back up 😊 well that's what we told our kids, also we put our tree down and pack up all decorations on boxing day whilst watching the yacht race, we try to see all the family leading up to Xmas and on Xmas day then on boxing day we spend that alone at home packing everything up 😁
I’m from the USA and I never really thought about how other countries do it until my son said he wants to learn about it. Hopefully you’re able to go there soon and get us a good video! Lol

12:25 The idea of Santa using kangaroos instead of reindeer comes from a 1960 story book and song "Six White Boomers" by Rolf Harris. When I was a kid in the 1970s it was very well known. It has probably fallen out of favour since Rolf Harris was convicted of sexual assault charges in 2014. Here's a good version of the song by another singer: ua-cam.com/video/Qu76GhRO9Yk/v-deo.html
In California, Christmas is obviously still in winter since we’re in the northern hemisphere. However, our winters are super mild so it’s not like we get snow or anything so what some people might do a snow day up in the mountains or something (Big Bear is a super popular destination here in the south of the state). Fake snow is totally a thing too though it’s not as common as it seems to be in Australia 😅and it’s still cold enough to wear stuff like beanies and boots and scarves.
We always referred to the holidays as the Christmas holidays, not summer. I remember the fake snow.. Usually a roast turkey dinner in the middle of the day or late afternoon. The British Christmas pudding is not so usual.Going to church is still done though not as much as in past decades.Alcohol was always left out for Santa, along with a mince pie and carrots for the reindeer.
Your bugs in the tree comment made me remember the slug problem we had one year! It had been a really wet season leading up to Christmas, and we noticed that something was eating the wrapping paper on the gifts under the tree. Then we started noticing little silvery slug tracks in the mornings, but we still couldn't find them. Turns out they'd migrated up the tree and were living up in the angel. :D It was hilarious!
on the spiders bit, people go really, for spiders.... and then you think, wait, its australia the spiders are deadly and the size of video game minibosses...climbing out of your xmas tree.... yup thats going to be a recurring nightmare now.
Boxing Day is very much a British/Commonwealth Holiday. Most countries in the Commonwealth celebrate it. Australia celebrates it because of her British heritage.
As a Australian, the weather changes alot for Christmas. But NYE is very hot and humid. 40 plus weather. Last year we had a cold cold NYE which was strange for us, it was like 10 degress. Due to La Nina and the floods.
I don't know if I could do it! I great up in Nevada, and it's hotter than hell during the summers, but in December it gets quite cold! I also loved that we got a whole break in the middle of the school year just for Christmas! I couldn't handle the heat at Christmas!

Another thing worth noting is that saying "Merry Christmas" to someone in Australia is quite uncontroversial. In my workplace we all said it to each other even though most were not religious at all, and among those who did declare a religion, we had at least one each of Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist.
