I couldn't believe what the judges (Not including Randy) said about that first contestant. This is about who can sing & who can't. Not what you look like.

The first lady contestant hit it on the nail! I was thinking the same thing, that since she's not tall, blonde, skinny and scantily clad, that Simon would take issue! The image can be improved upon later, what's most important is that she CAN SING! I wonder did any judges tell Susan Boyle the same thing?
Simon definitely got less mean as the show went on, and that first girl was not fat at ALL. I don't know what they were talking about. Plus they've let WAY bigger people through with no complaints (Ruben Studdard... I mean, seriously).

I don't believe they were judging the first lady for her appearance. She came there to sing and make something of herself, not judged on how to look. They should have said she's going to Hollywood and then later said they would like her to change her appearance. Optional, not required of course.
Randy said about Karma Johnson is that all stars look many different ways and come in many different shapes and sizes and it's the star inside that counts. Ironically, 7 years later, the same thing would said about Susan Boyle.

Maria Watkins I sort of agree. But in the industry, looks really do matter. You don't have to look like another Kim Kardashian or Paris Hilton but you have to have some sort of image that's considered attractive to many people. Looks help your record sell more. It's sad but true.

You might not like that, I might not care, but 90% of people do, even if it's subconscious. And music industry is contrary to popular believe - about making money NOT music, and a lot more people will go to watch a good looking star even if she sings worse than a not so good looking star. It's just the way thing are.
