AlphaDream, the company behind developing Mario & Luigi, has filed for bankruptcy last night, meaning AlphaDream can't continue producing games unless they get a major bounce back. As it stands, the Mario & Luigi brand is in a critical state and I'm here to emphasize why it's worth salvaging along with AlphaDream's staff. Why does the series & this bankruptcy matter? What is the future of not just Mario & Luigi, but the Mario RPG genre?

I really hope Nintendo listens to us and at least release the TTYD Switch port that people have been campaigning for this year to at least show that we still want Mario RPGs. Best case scenario, we’ll not only get that but also Alphadream gets absorbed into Nintendo and we can either get a new M&L or a successor of sorts to it. For now, all we can do is hope.
Only for Mario RPGs? I would say for (almost) EVERY NINTENDO RPG:
-Paper Mario is the shadow of its former self;
-Golden Sun is vanished into the shadow;
-Mario & Luigi is dead;
-Pokemon is completely fucked up;
-Xenoblade Chronicles might not get anymore sequels due to the nature of the story of the two main games (who played them knows what I'm referring to);
-Fire Emblem... I would have said that it turned abominable, but then Three Houses happened and fixed most of the damages made by Fates, but still;
In Such a short time all the most valuable Nintendo's RPG franchises have suffered such tremendous fates and now there's nothing more left and we can just revisit the old ones... I'm scared... T_T

They haven’t got a great game since 2007 and didn’t get a game with the original battle system since 2004, the paper mario fans are probably really impatient about this

Not true. Played both, but prefer Paper Mario. I'm not happy that Mario & Luigi is dead but it does increases the chance of Paper Mario coming back.
I'm going to be honest one of the biggest part about this that I don't see brought up enough is well. There are going to be dozens of employees that have lost their jobs due to this. It's not just about the serious that stings, its that the fact that there is a chance of these talented people being unable to find a new job. And it's a shame theres a lot of "Well now paper mario can come back now haha!" When that is a thing that is happening or hell might have even already happened. It's not just about the games that meant a lot to some people. It's about the fact that people losing their jobs due to a company bankruptcy is terrifying and sad.

Which in all knowledge even if she did have prior knowledge of the series being an rpg she would not speak out and bring up the difference in gameplay style by calling out the people above her like some people want. She doesn't want to be fired. So she gave an answer that just ended up lighting the fans on fire, because she kinda had to. There wasn't another option or way for *to* answer that question
I agree. It's one thing to lose a game franchise but it's another to lose you're job. People who say this is good so paper mario can be better clearly don't have jobs and probably still live with their mother.
Alpha Dream is made up of former Square Enix workers. I hope Nintendo buys them. It feels so unfair

Superstar Saga was my childhood.
As a Fandom user, you have no idea how many times I've had to write that.
I seriously want to see Mario & Luigi games remade on Switch at least. The art direction in every game is astounding, and I would LOVE to see them in HD in a collection of some kind. But hell dude, Paper Mario will never be more to me than Mario & Luigi. Paper Mario 1,2, & 3 are wonderful, but it’s like you said, the M & L series has consistently sold better when they released on proper hardware for the times. And I cannot help but feel it’s for a good reason. M & L has always stuck by it’s whacky, unrestrained routes, unique characters and hilarious dialogue. Even watching Mario & Luigi interact in these games was awesome! (Partners in Time especially) Whatever, I guess if anything they ended the series without having a significant flop like Paper Mario so far.. I hope somebody does something to save this wonderful series.

It is extremely selfish and there is a larger story behind Paper Mario like you said. Sure, I’m not into Paper Mario but if the roles were reversed I would never make those comments when massive fans lost their favorite franchise

So sad this happened to AlphaDream, I really hope Nintendo buys them out. M&L is a pretty great series. It’s not its fault PM changed, it sucks to hear some celebrate these events happening to AlphaDream.
There has to be something we can do. I dont want to imagine a reality where I cant play a new Mario and Luigi game. Dream Team was my favorite, mainly due to nostalgia and being one of the first games Ive ever tried playing multiple times. Ive also played Superstar Saga and it was a blast, even if a little hard for me. Hopefully Nintendo buys alphadream

What is odd for me I just started playing the remake of Super Star Saga a week before the bankruptcy was announced.
I really like this game and find it much more enjoyable than traditional RPGs of the Super Nintendo era.
Hopefully Nintendo could absorb the Alpha Dream talent.
Mario & Luigi is a truly great spin-off of the Mario & Luigi franchise. We can't let it die. We also can't let the original Mario & Luigi die either. The remakes are pretty much Acclaimed Flops a la Paper Mario 64-good games, but got poor sales due to being on a sunset console.

I LOVED Bowser in Inside Story, he was so admirable and it made me love the character even more, he was brave and showed why he is great.
Honestly if we wanna get real negative, Intelligent Systems could look at the sales of the remakes and come to the conclusion that Mario RPG's overall don't sell well, thus preventing Paper Mario going back to it's roots. Another reason why that whole "This is great for Paper Mario" argument doesn't work

Even if the Mario and Luigi series somehow manages to be saved and made a brand new title for the Switch, I am hopeful that Nintendo and Intellgent Systems will turn things around and do the same with Paper Mario, but man, Paper Mario is absolutely suffering the Star Fox syndrnme of just not being able to redeem itself.

Now that I've thought about it I beleive Mario and Luigi will most likely be fine. the same exact thing happened with Mario Party where Hudson went bankrupt sometime after 8 and another developer consisting of previous hudson employees continued working on it.
In terms of the Paper Mario sales I could've sworn TTYD sold over 2 million, Super sold 3 million, Sticker Star sold over 2 million and Color Splash sold 800K (probably a million plus now) but I see where you're coming from.
I absolutely can't stand that people are using Mario and Luigi's possible cancelation as a stepping stool for Paper Mario to come back. Paper Mario does not need more pressure on it because another RPG series might end. It's a huge fuck you to AlphaDream, M and L fans and not everyone is going to go to Paper Mario for a Mario RPG fix. Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi do not play the same.
I'd rather have AlphaDream be bought by Nintendo so they can continue making games. It's not that I don't have faith in other developers, it's just that I trust AlphaDream with this series. I hope things turn out okay for us all, because the current situation is upsetting to me and all of us

SMT, I'm behind you 110%! This series has so much value and love and care put into it! We can't sit quiet. Mario RPGs are at their lowest point RIGHT NOW,, and we need to act as fast as possible. Mario & Luigi is too important.

Before I say anything, I just want to state the fact that I love the Mario and Luigi series as much as anyone. I own all five games, have loved them for years, and go back to play them frequently.
That being said, I don't think I would be sad if the series were to end. Don't get me wrong, if we got a 6th entry, I would be incredibly hyped, but the way things stand, I'm fine with the way the series is now (save for the remakes). Each game has it's own self contained story that I can always look back on fondly, and I feel like 5 games is a nice, round number to finish a series off on without leaving me exactly dying for more. Not to mention that, while I still enjoyed Paper Jam immensely, I will admit that it felt like they were running out of ideas, at least as far as setting. Considering the two games that followed Paper Jam were only remakes, I fear the series was on track to get worse before it got better.
If by some miracle, AlphaDream avoids bankruptcy or gets picked up by Nintendo and they produce the banger of a sequel that this series deserves, then I would welcome that reality with open arms. But if we're being realistic, the odds just aren't in our favor, and at some point we might just have to be okay with that. After all, everything has to come to an end eventually.

Mario and Luigi is important to all of us, and to cut the series short with so much potential on new hardware would be such a disappointment. I’m really hoping a resolution is found.

As each Mario and Luigi game progress, Bowser seems to increasingly get a more active role in each one. While I know there's a good number of people who see mario+rpgs being a thing as an opportunity to have someone other than Bowser be the main antag for a Mario game, I can't help but appreciate how much character development the Mario and Luigi series has for Mario, Luigi, as well as Bowser. All the characters you know will recur. The games really make you concern for the main characters like storytelling should.

Although I may have been introduced to action rpgs first, Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga was legit the first rpg I have ever played in my life. To see this series go after it’s 5th original entry is heartbreaking, it was a big reason why I enjoyed this genre of games in the first place.
I wasn't subbed previously, but you my friend have earned a subscriber! I've played every M&L game (except the BiS remake), and OG paper Mario + TTYD, and I am really hoping neither is dead, just like you.
Personally, Dream Team is one of my favorite games ever.

Pretty much every idea for a game I've had has had some roots in Mario and Luigi. This series is the only one I stuck with for my whole life.
But I didn't buy Paper Jam or the remakes. Is that why this is happening? Because if people like me? I can't take that. I love the series so much, I love the battle system, the stories, the items, the characters, but did I fail the developers? Did WE fail them?

You shouldn’t blame yourself. If these games failed to be appealing enough to warrant a buy, then it’s the company’s mistake. I do think you missed out on a few things though, I‘ve played all of the Mario&Luigi games and they all had their qualities.
You're not alone - I love this series and yet didn't buy the remakes but thought nothing of it. The bankruptcy is probably more influenced by the fact that they didn't get many sales from those that are casually interested, rather than fans.
Partners in Time didn't introduce E. Gadd, just what the E stands for (Elvin). He previously showed up every time you brewed a new kind of coffee in Superstar Saga, and before that, had a mission control kinda role in Luigi's Mansion.
It truly makes me sad that the company behind so many wonderful games is going out of business.

I didn't know there was a heated rivalry between paper Mario and Mario+Luigi fans til the news of of the bankruptcy. I honestly always thought the fans of one were fans of the other, as they were of a similar cut.
I have seen many flame wars about this over the years. One guy said he wanted to burn M&L to the ground because he blames it for the death of Paper Mario. That was a flame war that went on for hundreds of comments. I don’t remember what video it was on.
Dream Team is a top 5 game in my list of best games ever made.
It's what made me an RPG fan to this day.

Thing is, I finally got around to playing the Superstar Saga remake. It's good. Like, really good. As in, I might consider making this the regular way I experience Superstar Saga. It's a shame more people haven't played it.
The good thing is: Paper Mario is slowly becoming an RPG series again :), the bad news: still no Mario & Luigi games on Nintendo Switch. :(
Alpha Dream went bankrupt so it's up to Nintendo if they want to continue the M&L series. Also Paper Mario will never be a proper RPG again cause the devs don't want to.

From what I heard, AlphaDream only has experience with 2D games and not 3D. So I have a bad feeling Nintendo would not be willing to buy the studio out and "give them a chance at trying again" due to 1. some form of thinking that 2D games may not bring the highest quality compared to a 3D game. Or 2. it would be way too costly and take too much time to teach the alphadream team how to work with 3D graphics. It just comes to show companies want machines, not people. In terms of alphadream having a a chance at making a 2D game on switch, I would think it could work due to there being a hefty amount of graphically amazing 2D games on switch. However, I again am assuming Nintendo would find that developing 3D games are a lot more profitable on the switch compared to developing a 2D game in house. I hope all for the best for the alphadream team and for the Mario and Luigi series.
I think a Switch version of M&L could work if it was something like Octopath Traveler or DQXIS 2D Mode with using upscaled sprites instead of full on 3D models. Personally I liked the Spirte style of SS-BiS over the one from DT onward but I wouldn’t mind seeing either style or even a new style on Switch.
Putting the remakes on the 3ds was a bad idea alpha dream wouldn’t be seemingly bankrupt if they had put the remakes on the Nintendo switch

If anything, the financial failure of alphadream DISCURAGES IntSys to ever going back to the roots of rpg mario games, whoever thinks otherwise cant see simple reason
Bowser's Inside Story was my first Mario RPG and I gotta say we've never seen any character development in the characters, especially Bowser. To see him get the spotlight is what makes it such a great game.

This is pretty sad honestly.. Mario & Luigi Partners and Time was the first game I ever played in my life and after playing it I fall in love with the whole series. I bought and finished all the games of the series (expect M&LSS which I’m buying) and knowing now that the company is in bankruptcy it’s very sad. I hope the best for Alphadream
It’s actually very possible that they can give the rights to Nintendo and have them remaster some of the games and finally have a Mario and Luigi sequel on the switch
Also if you noticed, M&L after Dream Team barelly had any advertise, I imagine that so many people didn't ever knew the remakes existed
in all seriousness though yeah mario and luigi may not be the same again, and while I do personally like paper mario a bit more mario and luigi is still a great series and in terms of villains, fawful is imo better than any of the villains in paper mario (even dimentio) and I still hope there is a mario and luigi game on switch. and if nintendo is going to let a new team make the games, I hope they are faithful and make the series better for alphadream, and if some employers from alphadream are part of this said team, then that would make it so much better. the worst case scenario would be that the new team could drastically change the series to the point of beyond saving much like what happened with paper mario, I hope that dosent happen though

I'll note this here now...This is NOT a hate comment so don't take it that way.
Ok, as both a Mario&Luigi and Paper Mario fan, I can see right away that you're taking what people say about Paper Mario returning waaaay out of context. Yes, it does increase the chance of Paper Mario returning to an actual RPG series. That's indeed going off what we were told, which is the only thing we can go off of right now, even if not true. HOWEVER, most of us are NOT saying that Mario&Luigi needed to die to get the game. Most of us actually want both series to go on together. So if you saw a lot of people on twitter saying it's good that Mario&Luigi is gone, then you saw the minority and not the majority.
Also if(Yes, I know I said IF) the next direct showing off new games(whenever that'll be) suddenly shows a Paper Mario remake or brand new game returning to the RPG style we know and love, then that would basically confirm it. In that case YEAH to Paper Mario, but booooo to Nintendo for screwing over both series and not allowing both to go at the same time as RPGs. So yeah, a lot of us are not saying Mario&Luigi dieing is a good thing.
So apart from the Paper Mario misunderstanding stuff, I enjoyed this video.

I think the reason some people want to think this could possibly be good news for Paper Mario is because Nintendo supposedly didn't want more than one Mario RPG series, thus Mario & Luigi was the main one. Anyone who thinks this will lead to the next Paper Mario game becoming more like the first two is falling victim to wishful thinking as that probably won't happen as long as Miyamoto calls the shots, and he's not a fan of RPG's. Above all else, I sincerely hope the good folks of AlphaDream can get out of debt and get on well enough, so best wishes to them and many thanks for their awesome work.

Where are the millions of fans that didnt buy the games, i mean, pretty sure lots of people could have buied the 3ds remake. Also, in case you arrive with the argument that with a switch game, i would have been different. Just saying that when you make 3ds game, passing to a switch game, the costs are multiplying by 10. 3ds was barely as powerfull as a ps2, the switch is more powerfull than a ps3. Make the maths...

Thanks for the video man. Bowser's Inside story is one of my favorite games ever, this is the one that got me into gaming alongside the Total War series.

Before this, I'd only played a little bit of Dream Team and found it a little dull. There were too many tutorials and the 2D sections had dull level design. Now I've realised I was treating this series like the 2D Mario games, which isn't fair. As an rpg, it's really solid and now that I'm a fair way into the game, I really love it. I hope this series doesn't die

I'm afraid that Nintendo understood that the Super Mario series is made just for children, so they're gonna continue to make money over the 35-year formula of SMB (the standard 2D platformer), milking it even though it's totally dried up (NSMBU Deluxe).
Also, Nintendo may have got that there are a lot of RPGs out there, so maybe they understood that the Paper Mario / M&L series would not be successful.
I seriously think that NSMBU Deluxe is the only future for the Super Mario series. No RPGs, no sports series, no spinoffs. Just the bland formula.
Nintendo is sure that no adults want to play SMB, and that they play only 18+ games.
This is the end of Super Mario for me.

Thank you so much for making this. This series is truly incredible and doesn’t deserve to disappear the way it does. Apparently the team is still working on a Switch game, so there may still be hope, but things aren’t looking good at all right now..
I didn't even know about this. The first DS game I ever played was Mario Luigi Bowser Inside Story. I'm glad this popped up in my recommendation box. I don't want to see they company fall nor the this Mario RPG series to die away.

Let's be real, if they had to choose between one of their big franchises or one of many spin-offs to Mario, it's easy which one they would choose. And while I love the Mario and Luigi games, both of those franchises you mentioned would be just a bit better off staying.

The remakes were like the DS remakes of FE1 and 3. One more chance and things could turn around.
1:55 i disagree in 2017 we had the new 2ds xl, Dragon Quest VIII remake in America and Europe, Dragon Quest XI in Japan, Fire Emblem Echoes, Samus Returns and Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon. I blame the poor sales more on the fact a reviewer dumped the games' rom online 2 weeks before release
That and they also didn't push the marketing very strongly I feel? Like, these aren't small games, but they were kind of treated like nbd.

I had hopes that AlphaDream would strike gold if they made a M&L game for Switch but holy fuck they weren't even given a chance.
All I know is that a NEW grand ol M&L RPG for the Switch would be fucking sweet! This series is a part of my childhood and would be so welcome on the Switch!

I'm sure that the hacked 3ds consoles is one factor in the low sells of the later 3ds games, you see I'm from Central America and here at the Facebook videogame sell/trade groups when people are selling 3ds or 2ds consoles 9 out of 10 are hacked consoles wit at least 20 games installed in a large SD card and in the pictures they are always showing the late released games, it is VERY rare to see intact consoles for sale, another signal that proves this is that places were they sell new physical games they have older games and they got stuck wit those games that doesn't seem to be selling, for example the newer game I saw in those places is Detective Pikachu the rest are at least 2 or 3 years old stock, only ONE store keep bringing the last wave of 3ds games but the have a very short supply , and I had to pre-order Persona Q2 wit them because they said they were only going to bring games for the pre orders
@@SuperMarioT Maybe it depends in wish country people are located, a if you have a lower income people are more tempted to hack their consoles, at those Facebook video game groups they are even people advertising to take your console to hack for cheap prices, lately is Switch, PS4, Vita and 3ds, and some consoles like PSP and PS1 are extremely hard to find one without hack

when i got a ds i had an r4 wich for some reason although it let me play patners in time it didnt let me play bowser insides story i got hooked and its too bad none of you can see my 50 hour savefile fast forward half a year and i discover superstar saga could be played at a site in the internet when i was half way through game i went on a trip to visit my family and enjoy vacations but guess what? my cousin casually had bowser inside story card she also had mario party and basically she didnt bother to learn bowser inside story mechanics so she gave it to me i literally played it to a point it was always on my ds instead of a case or something badly do to my house being juggled up i lost the r4 but still had that game eventually the ds got old to the point it didnt turn on nor read the card (at least not that game) just a few months ago i bought a new 3ds and am happy to see my 30 hours of gameplay are still there i started a new adventure to see how fast i can surpass myself and have the patners in time and star saga on my wii u i must say this games were iconic they were literally the games i played through most of my life and its sad to see how they are just dying for something nintendo could solve in an instant if i had the money i would pay for their debt myself anyways whats for the worse is that theres the posibility that the last thing we see about them are those awful remakes (comapared to the originals) and the fact that nintendo could just replace them with another company like if nothing i would like to see nintendo care for the people that made this games and see them progress anyways this lat thing is just my thought but wouldnt it be nice to at least have another game to set goals on like doing bowser X fight without taking damage? (it is possible)

This is really sad because I loved these games ;-; I started with the original Super Star Saga on the GBA. I don't have any of the 3DS Versions but if I were to pick I'd probably get Paper Jam because that is the last of RPG for Paper Mario... I don't care as much for the remakes I like the originals more but honestly, this is so sad it would be so great to see Mario & Luigi on the Switch some day, maybe a high up Nintendo game director can take it up to make these games.
