A few more to add to the list. 1. Style guides. Never deliver a logo without it. 2. Logo application. Show your client mockups on how the logo is applied to brand collaterals.
@@RealLaone What you cover in a style guide really depends on the client and what they need. At least how a logo should be used, which colors and how to apply them and which typography is kinda the minimum.
2:50 - The way you explain the rules with real-time examples is top-notch. Few more to add: 1. Keep it simple 2. Keep it balanced 3. Aim for easy recall
So refreshing to see tips being given that are focused on the business/communication aspect of this industry. SO MANY designers overlook this arguably more important aspect of their craft and their business suffers for it. I would love to see more videos that focus on the business/communication side of design just for the piece of mind that less people will be running around out there in the working world failing because they've neglected these very important considerations. Have a great day, everyone!
I designed around 30 logos the past 3 years and I've been subconsciously following almost everything you mentioned. The most important thing in the video is your comparison between a pro and an intermediate designer (2:02). This is the key and whenever I present my thoughts around an idea to clients - that's almost always the key point.
I am in online marketing (just interested in graphic design), and I find your video very useful! I came across so many brands with wrong visuals, and it was really painful to correct these mistakes.
Good timing on the 'design your future today tagline', reads more naturally now. I'm doing some logo designs at the moment for university, one for my in-law's psychology business and one for my own personal brand, so having so many videos from you about logo design to watch has been a godsend. Thanks heaps for sharing your expertise!
Hey, your vidoes are really really informative and important for amateur graphic designers, thanks for sharing this awesome knowledge and when you said "not on youtube" i can agree this stuff is not on UA-cam and you are teaching us for free! Thanks alot.
Thank you for this....always in anticipation for your contents... Please your motion graphics, do you have tutorials on them? I really.love to learn it
I think technical stuffs are definitely important. But the most important thing is to have the 'Yes! this is the one!' feeling for your channel's logo.
Hi Tom, hello folks. I started putting together kind of a "start my graphics design business" guide out of all the business strategy related content you offer. You are very helpful and generous to share all your knowledge to us for free! Thank you very much, sir! 👍
Valuable info here. Hoping it continues to help designers move away from the mindset that we exist solely to move pixels in order to meet the client's "vision", rather than leading them to the best solution.
Beside of concept your hard work shows in your videos.how much colors and slides you use i am really impress and you way to telling the concept is on next level if i want to say how a graphic designer looks like then you name comes first hats off Sir
I tried to make a logo for my brother (not paid of course, every time I told my familly : "You don't pay me so I'm only doing the minimum, If you hit a wall because It's not a vector files, it"s not my problem anymore"). So my Bro his a real estate agent I wanted a Logo, So naturally I would chose a font first for the name, i proposed an impact like, thick line to represent sturdy wall. And then he showed a thin line curved font . him:"Oh I see it everywhere I thought It would be better to start from that." me:"Yes It's probably popular, but for thing like cloth, hair, or something that represent style (beauty salon or tatoo), But you're selling houses, and your probably gonna confuse people with this font." him:"You really sturborn with this, I still think's It's a better idea to chose something popular." I feel like the story telling work less on marketing people who only see number, it would have been better to show him an exel with all the data. But I was not going to spend time fighting my own brother for his own logo, when I'm not even getting paid.
So are you saying I can't be a logo designer if I want to do it for looking cool, because that's what I like about it. It shows what I can do for the client, and it keeps me going.
Totally beside the point here, I know, but... 2:09 reminds me so much of my mother when she calls and holds up the phone to show me a UA-cam video on her computer.
Your content is amazing all the time,❤️ And the motion graphic in your video is literally awesome,, I want to learn these, any suggeation sir, (i use after effects for basic motion graphic)
Thanks for another informative video. Slightly off topic do you have any thoughts or will you be posting a video about Adobe discontinuing Type 1 fonts for their Apps from January 2023. I work freelance for a publisher and this will affect a majority of their back catalogue. Keep up the good work!
Yeah I did that too for ages. It will just confuse the client and dilute your message within the logo. Have a direct idea and be confident in why it works
Really amazed, and this is powerful, but should the vectors or shape will build be related to what the brand is all about, course most of the time I convince clients even if the shape doesn't tell the story behind what they Do... ???? Dose it mean I break rules....🤷
Hi. Concerning the rule 2 i was thinking about running a survey for example targeting the type of clients the logo is designed for. What questions could I ask them then ?
The design brief should guide the process in order to accomplish rules 1 and 2. The design brief should be filled out by the client and discussed with the client before the work begins.
Research. That means talking to your client and asking them about their typical clients. Look into their industry and see what kind of person uses their product or service.
These "rules" don't really have anything to do with design directly, but how to sell your designs and make money once you've already designed. Bit of a misleading video, tbh Rule 3 is sort of an exception, but even then it shifts from an actual design tip to how that translates to securing a client.
The most desirable thing that a contractor want by a designer is that he "jump on the boat", take some effort to understand and maybe even love the brand. A contractor want to hear sometimes things like "I visited your website", "I read your briefing, but I need more clarification about...", "I made some research about your target audience and I think they will love this visual identity because...", "I think that I'm part of your target audience myself (if is truth) can I have a nice deal?". Because any brand owner want to work with people that are in tune, involved with the brand ideas. A logo, a visual identity, is something planned to be used by a brand virtually forever like its public face. Would you let your face be operated on by a surgeon who didn't like you?
Not related to logos, but i have this question troubling me for days now... Is it okay/legal to use the same company's font as the competition? Say, I have a footwear company using FUTURA BOLD which is the one NIKE uses?
As long as you have obtained the font legally then yes. However, it is a grey area and you might be taken to court on trademark issues. It's always best toust do something that is not obviously copying another brand anyway
A few more to add to the list.
1. Style guides. Never deliver a logo without it.
2. Logo application. Show your client mockups on how the logo is applied to brand collaterals.
Valid for sure. I have covered number 2 many times on this channel :P

Ohhh the video design is wonderful itself. Your voice, calming background music and soft animations are perfect for brain relaxing and learning

I couldn't agree more on the second rule. A designer should not just design the logo for a company, he should design the logo for it's audience.
