Appreciate the video. I hang a Rescue disposable fly trap at all my mineral sites to help with the deer flies. They will fill up so I will go and swap them out every few weeks. They are $6 at tractor supply.
Twenty five years ago i watched a documentary about the life of a deer and they were up north and the deer were getting killed by cars because they would salt the road for snow so the deer would eat the dart on the side of the roads and get hit by cars. it also showed deer licking the salt off the side of parked cars. thats when a light went off in my head. at the time hunters were not using salt and minerals much so i went to a feed store and got some bags of salt with minerals put it out and the deer would eat the dart and the minerals and make a big hole in the ground. i thought it may have been a factor why the deer up north grew larger racks. i also used lucky buck about twelve years ago and had a lot of lock with it.
My buddy in ohio runs giants gravity feeders year round. With a corn soybean molasses mixture that also has garlic and fish oil in it. He says the garlic and fish oil helps keeps the ticks and deer flies off the deer. Pretty expensive method but he swears by it.
Something I have done in my yard for mosquitoes is Termidor SC or the off brand Taurus SC. Put it in a backpack spray with water and spray all over the vegetation around the area you want to minimize mosquitos. The main ingredient is Fipronil which attacks the nervous system of insects. I think when the mosquitos land on the vegetation to rest it kills them. I don’t know for sure, but it seems to help.
About helping control the insects if the animals get the correct amount of trace minerals will help but remember Mother Nature is the best help there is. We have a friend that’s been making his own mix for many years and my cousin started using it 30 years ago in one spot but hasn’t added to it for 8 years the hole just holds too much water and all the trees below it died and the deer and other animals still use it. As far as that natural mineral site there’s one on one of the farms that’s been there as long as I can remember in a open field that’s steep and it doesn’t get washed out below it very far but everything licks from it but not a bunch, so that my take on minerals I’m no expert just been hunting a few properties 47 years ✌🏻👍🇺🇸 oh CWD Missouri needs to figure out why they don’t want anymore deer hunters 😤
For my summer mix I like to mix 50lb of trace salt, 50lb of trace salt with selenium, 50lb of dicalcium phosphate, 2% by weight of diatomaceous earth, and enough sunflower oil to kill the dust. I typically dump everything in a cement mixer and let it go. I’ve been adding the diatomaceous earth for a couple years now and it’s seems to really help with ticks and deer fleas.
I have a well-established mineral site in my backyard Makes for great summer interactions Rabbit, woodchuck and mourning doves seem to love them too. I think that was a dung beetle rolling a ball of "manure". I think they dig a burrow and put the dung ball in the hole and lay an egg/eggs in it.
Have hogs been attracted to your mineral licks? It has been a long time since I did a mineral lick, but we have a few that we established years ago that deer still come to. My dad will refresh them from time to time because they are close to his house, but I don’t think he did anything this year.
Enjoy your mineral sites while it lasts....here in my area of MN... they're illegal...CWD and the DNR have put them to an end😢... can't even use scents...
If you look up the ingredients, it’s all just salt, you the the same results by pouring out table or rock salt, and it’s much cheaper.. if you don’t belive me look up the ingredients.
Yes, a lot of products are 90+% salt. That's why he added the livestock mineral. Pay attention before you comment. You definitely don't get the same results by just putting out table or rock salt. Again, why he added the livestock mineral.
I would do a soil sample in that spot they like..
Dung Beetles rolling a turd! I don't think they're gonna smoke it though. 😁
I love to just watch nature probably as much as hunting

I put out some Purina antler max mineral today on a mineral lick they’ve been hitting, my first time trying it hopefully it’ll draw them in.
Those are dung beetles and that was dung they were rolling. They feed on the dung!!

Apple flavored corn works great aswell
You don't have to flavor corn for deer to eat it lol
Those beetles are DUNG BEETLES they are mainly in sandy warmer climates... like Africa where they originally come from
Ok, Thanks for info.
You should get a small soil sample of that 4th site and send it to be tested. It would be nice to know what's in the soil they're liking so much.
Never thought of that, good Idea.
Test it for CWD

Haven’t never got a pic of a hog at one.
Similar mix. I add anilogics for the essential oils they add.
Hows anout an update on these mineral licks??

I have thought about the back rubber for cattle. Didn't know if the chemical smell would bother them.
Do you have pig problems with your mineral sites?
No never had a problem with pig coming to it.
Do you have a tractor supply close? I do near me and go in there for stuff

Do hogs get on those feed sites or are you lucky and don’t have them around?
