I'm not too knowledgeable with Death Note side projects, but I like the unique relationship between the Note holder & Shinigami in this. Usually they're either self-serving & couldn't care less about each other, or has one-sided affection (usually from shinigami side), but this is the first time I see when both sides seems to genuinely love each other, whether romantically or platonically.
Very fantastic design for this Shinigami, her demeanor and the way her design is created in the movie (whether it's all CGI or practical or a mix of both) is absolutely fantastic, the soft voice acting and subtle movements of her face and arms give a very elegant feel, nothing Netflix made in relation to Death Note even comes close.

The only way it can be destroyed is if loves a human... and uses its deathnote to save the human. Because shinigami is grim=reaper, god of death, it's only purpose is to take life, and to not care. If it saves a life, espeally one it cares for, then it betrays itself and self destructs. she loves him. she saves him. then she's gone.

This shinigami seems to work on the same principle as Makkuro Kurosuke from Spirited Away. If they stopped working they would turn to dust. It's interesting how artists take folklore and transform it into something more beautiful. Tolkien did this too. This is perhaps equivalent to taking a simple but very beloved and meaningful children's play, precious to many, and improving it over time. A DNA of idea that is passed on. Beautiful!
I agree that they share similarities, but in this case It's less that they stop working and more that they go against their true nature. The singular role of a shinigami is to kill/feed off human lives, but should they ever knowingly kill a human with the sole intention of saving another, then they will immediately disintegrate. To a shinigami, falling in love is a death sentence.

No way, is this related to Death Note? I never saw this cute hot shinigami girl before. No, no, Death Note may be kinda awesome but it's not this. This is too good for Death Note. Although, then again, the fact that Death Note has shinigami and a shinigami realm, makes you wonder what other realms and supernatural beings might exist in the DNverse.
