In case anyone has trouble with the gui not starting after choosing the language, try choosing one of the options under "Other modes of GParted Live". In my case "GParted Live (Safe graphic settings, vga=normal)" did the trick.
Amazing tutorial thank you. I initially tried using the gparted iso but linux couldnt see it to boot into. Tried the zip method in your vid and worked straight away!
What about the situation when you have two partitions - both allocated - and I want to merge the two partitions? Moreover, what about moving allocated a partition in the middle or at the end of partitions to the extreme right hand side?! Would you consider doing a video of showing these aspects?
Thaniks so much for this video. Searched around for while until I found it. Was able to remove a few consoles from a 1TB Batocera image and then clone and resize it to get it down to under 500 GB for a friends setup with a smaller hard drive. So helpul! Not to mention you gave life to a 1 GB USB drive I had in a drawer that will live out its days in the IT tool kit versus going in the trash.
How do you boot into g parted? After you get the files on the usb stick does it automatically switches over to f part den windows and how do you exit g parted? Sorry for all the question but I’m not a Computer wiz and I don’t want to screw up my computer 😂 just making sure I know what I’m doing, thanks

Sorry man, what do I do if my unallocated partition isn't right beside the partition I want to expand? Do I have to move it and if yes, how do I do that?
Tried 3 times with different sticks and i couldn't get my Linux on my steam deck to boot the drive. I've done it before with Rufus to dual boot it, but i can't get this to work :(
well you can use gparted to carve out your space for both OS, then you just need to follow directions for setting up dual boot and make sure you install on the correct partitions.

I shrunk the EFI/boot partition by half, which leaves me with half of that partition unallocated. Following that partition, is an ext4 root partition. Is there away to join the unallocated partition to the root partition? Thanks.
When made the bootable file in the terminal window it said accessing physical drive--access is denied--did not successfully update the mbr--failed to move idl linux, sys to destination directory :sys linux--failed to move idl linux,c32.
Attempted to do this with Batocera after it kept giving me errors about not having enough space for an update. Absolutely, positively could not increase the size of the boot folder, no matter what. It just straight up maxes out a 3GB and won't extend, even after shrinking the other partition. So I guess I need to do a fresh install, because Batocera isn't happy until I'M not happy. Damn it. DAMN IT.
I partitioned a new M.2 and is not C drive and has no important data. I accidentally created a partition which created 2x 1TB partitions. I wish to make it a single 2TB drive. Do I still have to create a bootable USB thumbdrive and run makeboot from that or can run it from windows?

Bro thank you for doing this video, it helped me expanded my VM server from 2TB to 4TB successfully!
Glad it was able to help!!

thats awesome, glad to hear it!
Does it matter if you install gparted through windows if you're resizing partition in ubuntu linux. im using dual boot of windows and linux

once you get the thumbdrive made, then reboot your computer and change the boot disk to be usb

you should be able to click on them and move them around

what type of partitions are they?
Aomei partition assistant is a great alternative when this one is not working, really useful.
my only issue with it is its really only windows based. So if you are primarily non-windows, it doesnt really work for you.
@@BurnsHA why
I booted it but when I try to enter the system it says /live/vmlinuz not found... Help
thats strange, maybe try and rebuild the usb stick?
In my case, windows defender think vmlinuz is a virus so maybe that's the reason why it's missing

I had to disable secure boot and enable legacy support to remove an error but after that it was smooth sailing

I personally would love to use AOMEI tool than this GParted.
Im going to have to check it out, I havent used the AOMEI tool before, but have heard good things

So is the unallocated space next to the ext4 partition? If so, it should let you expand the ext4 partition.
Hello Dear, could you please advise what is the case that we should use gparted .
I think the most common would be if you had multiple partitions setup on a drive and you needed to resize them, this would allow you to do that.
When made the bootable file in the terminal window it said accessing physical drive--access is denied--did not successfully update the mbr--failed to move idl linux, sys to destination directory :sys linux--failed to move idl linux,c32.
it says it was successful but it will not boot
can you give me a little more information about your setup? what are we working with?

if you are using gparted, you will need to boot from a usb thumbdrive, that way it can modify the other drives you are talking about.
hello friend, i dont find the folder win32 in the usb stick are you sure thats its the name
well its been a while since I made that video, but as far as I know that folder should be there.
For some reason my USB is not being recognized as a bootable drive
what format do you have it set to?
@@BurnsHA I managed to boot into GParted but I could not move the unallocated space's position to extend the volume I wanted. In the end I just deleted some things to free some space
Does this delete material in the partition or will all the material still exist the same after resize?
on resizing partitions, it shouldnt delete anything.
I get the message:

What should I set it to in the bios?

Is using a usb drive better than installing gparted directly on the drive?
I haven't really tried installing it directly on the drive, do you just run it as a seperate partition?
@@BurnsHA No install it using sudo apt install gparted and within a linux desktop (don't know about CLI) it will be found as a utility in system tools.
Does one really need to create a live usb? I thought gparted came with linux or is easily downloadable...?
yes, but in order to make changes on the drive that you are running OS, you need to be able to boot on a seperate drive.
Aomei is good work on Windows, I have both windows pc and mac, will gparted work on mac?
Gparted works on anything, you will boot up with a gparted usb and then you can modify the partitions as needed, then reboot back into your OS.
can you make a clone with gparted? and can you resize a disk so you can copy a larger disk to a smaller one.
you should be able to resize the partition, not sure about cloning within gparted, i dont think thats possible.
You can resize the disk with gparted and after you can clone it with aomei backup running on windows system.
Drop Gparted iso onto a Ventoy USB, boot the Ventoy USB and launch the Gparted iso file, works great.
Thanks man worked like a charm

didn't work for me personally, simply couldn't drag to expand the partition into unallocated space to the right. no clue why
can you send me a screenshot of what yours looked like?

How did you boot into gparted
once you have it installed on a usb stick, than you can set your computer to boot from USB in the bios.
Unfortunately, these are no longer valid, per the Gparted site.
interesting, ill look at doing an updated video then.
thanks kermit
It's works!
did you create the unallocated space from windows in diskmgmt.msc?
no, it is just extra space that doesnt currently have a partition created on it.
