Le ville pontificie di Castel Gandolfo

Le Ville Pontificie coprono un'area di 55 ettari, dal borgo di Castel Gandolfo al centro abitato di Albano, e nascono negli anni ‘30 del XX secolo come residenza estiva del Pontefice, unendo in un unico territorio Villa del Moro, Villa Cybo e Villa Barberini. Ai piedi del Palazzo Apostolico di Castel Gandolfo sorgono i giardini seicenteschi con siepi di Bosso, mentre dal piano nobile della Villa Barberini la vista si apre su un belvedere e sulle gallerie di Lecci di oltre 400 anni che fanno ombra nella passeggiata tra le rovine del palazzo domizianeo: le volte degli edifici, un criptoportico, il teatro e i ninfei. Tra i giardini storici: il Giardino dell'Agrumeto, quello del Labirinto, degli Specchi e la Scarpata delle Aromatiche.
Tra i giardini moderni, si possono ammirare le fioriture tra i terrazzamenti degli orti, il Giardino del Crocifisso e il Giardino del Buon Pastore.
Il parco è ricco di giochi d'acqua, e ospita centinaia di specie vegetali, oltre ad essere un'oasi per volpi, tassi, scoiattoli neri, rapaci, picchi.

The Papal Villas cover an area of 55 hectares, from the village of Castel Gandolfo to the town of Albano, and were created in the thirties of the twentieth century as a summer residence of the Pontiff, combining in a single territory Villa del Moro, Villa Cybo and Villa Barberini. At the foot of the Apostolic Palace of Castel Gandolfo are the 17th century gardens with boxwood hedges, while from the main floor of Villa Barberini the view opens onto a belvedere and the galleries of Holm oaks over 400 years old that provide shade as you walk through the ruins of the Domitian palace: the vaults of the buildings, a cryptoporticus, the theater and the nymphaea. Among the historical gardens: the Citrus Garden, the Labyrinth Garden, the Mirror Garden and the Scarpata delle Aromatiche.
Among the modern gardens, you can admire the blooms among the terraced gardens, the Garden of the Crucifix and the Garden of the Good Shepherd.
The park is full of water features, and is home to hundreds of plant species, as well as being an oasis for foxes, badgers, black squirrels, birds of prey, and woodpeckers.
