    Love what you are doing. We (family of 7) are striving to become more self sufficient. We currently have a garden and plan to get chickens and an aquaponics system up and running. We really appreciate the effort that it takes to do what you are doing. Great videos! Getting some wonderful ideas from folks like you. Keep up the good work!

    What you need is an ecozoom planchera for the inside of each of your homes, it runs on very small bits of wood, one of these would mean you would probably never need propane again.

    Zac, Jamie, Tim and Joann! Greetings from the sticks of E. Texas. I wouldn't quite call us "homesteaders" but my husband's family has been on this land for 5 generations and still retain knowledge of "the old ways". We occasionally plow with Grandpa's old Georgia Stock plow and mule/horse/donkey, for instance. I realize the geography is different between our locations but I thought I'd "put a bug in your ear" as for building ovens and such. When my father-in-law was a young man (born 1903) they used Sand Rock and "Gumbo Mud" for chimney construction. Gumbo mud dries HARD in the sun. I am currently drawing up plans to build an outside BBQ pit, oven, cooktop using this construction. If there is anything like Gumbo mud in your area, you might look into using it also, as well as the natural stone you might find around. When I finally get around to building my set up...I'll let you know how it turns out. I have SOO enjoyed your videos! Watched all 8 episodes in 2 days. Zac and Mr. Tim, my husband is sooo pleased (

    I found you via Pinterest! Watched all 8 episodes. My husband and I are just about 60 now and are finally moving on dreams of homesteading (slowly). I am greatly encouraged seeing your parents living completely off grid along with you, it gives me hope :) We do intend to make use of solar power and not live quite as off grid as you, but still am so encouraged! Looking forward to later episodes.

    Love the oven I hope it works out for and cuts down your propane costs. Your chooks look all grown up. Are you still bothering to compost your food scraps in the tumbler? All our vegetarian food scraps go to the chickens (except avocado - it's apparently poisonous though we didn't have a casualty). Even the stuff they don't eat like orange peel and onion skins break down in the run pretty quickly. It creates great soil that can be harvested for pots or added to the garden.

    I don't understand why you cannot use cedar inside? It is one of the primary wood types we burn in Southeast Alaska. Red and yellow cedar, hemlock, etc. An annual cleaning is more than sufficient to keep the risk of a chimney fire low. LOVE the videos. Can't wait for season 2!

    Just curious if you have looked into cooling options like earth tubes? A/C is not necessary, but a comfortable indoor temp in summer is always great if you can achieve it.

    Hey Homesteaders! I just began watching your videos yesterday and am enjoying them. We are in the St Louis area and are wondering if you guys are in MO or AR? We would love to do what you guys are doing! BTW one large high RPM exhaust fan in the roof of your homes will be as close to A/C as you can get and much better than no exhaust fan. They can be solar powered directly meaning NO BATTERIES needed but they would only run when light is present - not at night. But a lot of savings from not having to buy batteries. If you want to know where to get the controller that can do this solar fan without any batts just let me know.

    I did notice you were doing jobs around property and had a gun in its holster? Why would you need to do that? I'm from Australia and don't feel the need to do this.

      To protect family and/or livestock from Coyotes, Bobcats, and other predators..but mostly, to defend and protect against the lunatic fringe... That's a good enough reason right?

    What makes you think you can't burn cedar inside? Just curious... we used cedar all the time to keep our house warm in the winter when I was growing up in Kentucky.

    • @randyreitzer329
      @randyreitzer329 9 років тому

      +She Wolf Cedar, like pine and other resinous woods, creates a larger amount of creosote when it burns. It isn't so much that it can't be burned, but rather that the chimney needs to be maintained more often. A build up of creosote is what causes chimney fires, which often result in house fires.

    Outdoor oven
    You could convert that thing to a rocket mass oven and burn way less wood and it would burn cleaner.
    yep yep I got rocket mass heater/oven on the brain.

    Please forgive me. As mentioned, I am from Australia and we don't have the gun culture here. It's unusual to see someone right out in the country with a gun at their hip. I understand the need if you have wild beasts dropping in for a visit. So far as uninvited trouble makers? Who often would that happen?
