- What if you could go back in time to the early 17th century and see the extraordinary journey of the Dutch East India Company (VOC)?
This documentary takes you to the inception of Cape Colony (now known as the Cape of Good Hope). It starts when the Dutch East India Company and Jan van Riebeeck, a bold Dutch navigator, charted a course into the unknown and found this land in South Africa.
Key to their venture was the establishment of Fort de Goede Hoop in Table Bay, an initiative that solidified the Dutch presence in this new territory. Despite harsh conditions and the challenges of cultivating unfamiliar African soil, the Dutch settlers persevered and forged a new life.
But Cape Colony was more than a new settlement - it was a convergence of cultures. As the Dutch interacted with diverse peoples, the cultural fabric of Cape Colony was enriched, leading to the emergence of a distinct language - Afrikaans.
The Dutch East India Company left more than physical footprints in Cape Colony. Its influence is seen in the trade routes that crisscrossed the region, the architectural style that was imprinted on the settlements, and the legal systems and governance methods adopted.
Cape Colony became a melting pot of diverse cultures, which even led to the birth of a new language: Afrikaans.

Governor of the Cape, wrote in his diary:
_"Began holding schools for young slaves. To stimulate slaves to attention while at school, and _*_to induce them to learn Christian prayers,_*_ they were promised each _*_a glass of brandy and two inches of tobacco,_*_ when they finish their task."_

You know exactly what it means. It means they hadn't known about it before and now they did. The fact that someone else knew about it before doesn't negate the fact that to them it was previously unknown. "Discovery" is a term relative to the discoverer, unless we're using it in the context of "discovering gravity" for example, in which case, as far as we know, absolutely noone knew about it before Newton.
It means the Europeans recently discovered it. It's not very complicated to understand

The framing of this is SOOOOO slanted in the direction of the colonizers. The way you talk about this gives off the impression that the settlers just migrated and went about their lives and the people indigenous to the land were “hostile” just for no reason, or because they possessed a sort of inherent savagery. The fact that you call the indigenous population hostile but talk about the colonizers in such a morally neutral way should set off alarm bells for anyone who has even the slightest grasp on what imperialism is. Not a good video at all. Please people in the comments don’t use this to try to learn or teach anything.
