This is the best track of a perfect album. I was caught by the ears, mind and heart by how cool this two voices blended. I could listen to duets of this two the resto of my life easy. This album deserves the Grammy.
I was 'heading for home' today along winding, hedge-lined country lanes in the sunny but cold Cotswolds, UK, when this song came on BBC Radio 2. It summed up the moment perfectly and it completely moved me. It forced me to slow down, look at the golden dusk light bathing the wooded hills, called me to wind the window down to listen to the birds and asked me to look at the rabbit families playing in the fields. The radio presenter called it sublime and my goodness it really was. Thank you
This just stopped me in my tracks and made me feel a yearning for something i cant even place, like part of my soul is missing but i hadn't realised until I heard this. What a gift, to be able to do that with voices.
You've put it perfectly: that's exactly how I felt when listening to this exquisite song. And one of the most beautiful uses of a banjo that I've ever heard.
The Brazilians have a brilliant word for this exact feeling: Saudade. A feeling of longing for a life unlived, an almost wistful nostalgia for a place unseen, the pangs of desperately missing a person or thing that probably never existed, a feeling of loss for a time never experienced. Sprinkle in a bit of melancholy, and this is precisely what this song makes me feel. So, definitely can relate. And yes, it's almost magical what voices can be capable of.
@@mostlynull Sim, i've been trying to learn Portuguese so have been familiarising myself with suadade and Fado melancholy. thank you for reminding me, obrigada!
@@porgeous88 De nada. I think it's wonderful that such an ineffable emotion can be shared between complete strangers, not to even mention being able to name such a tenuous feeling.
Just exquisite. Two amazing voices melded together. I've found my Farewell song when my time comes. Job well done fellas. You made tears in the best way. xx
Honestly, I can picture it. My family slowly closes the lid to my coffin, the church doors open, and as the pallbearers raise me up on their shoulders and solemnly head to the open doors, this song softly begins. The strings swell as my coffin exits the church and all the attendees follow along in procession. The hearse awaits outside, a speaker mounted to the roof or something, and as all my loved ones pile into their cars (or file along behind the hearse) whilst I'm placed in the hearse and driven to my final resting place, this song plays the whole while. And as the last note resounds, we arrive at my plot. There, they'd be greeted by the parson, my guitar situated in pride of place before my grave, and a recording of myself performing the final lines of the song as a sort of final goodbye to all the people I adore. Not a single dry eye amongst the attendees as I'm lowered into my plot. It'll be beautiful. Hell, I'd probably wish I were still alive to just be there and see it all play out. 😂
I discovered Rufus before genuinely getting to know the songs of his mother (Kate McGarrigle), sisters (Martha and Lucy), and father (Loudon Wainwright III). Like so many, I came to Rufus via his early cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah and his first release in 1989, including the incredible releases "In My Arms," "Millbrook," "Beauty Mark," and "Barcelona." I recognized the operatic range, English Major rich pop song content, and passionate delivery from the start.
Such an interesting pairing. I love each artist separately and together they are magical! What a beautiful song and memorable performance! We need more of these two together!!
Oh my God this song fills me with so much strength, to me it mirrors what Rufus is saying in other songs, we must find our own way home. Those of us who come from abuse or neglect or just downright not exactly ideal parenting or teaching, our perfect parents who just don't get us, or those of us whose hearts break when see any form of violence, abuse, pain, suffering and neglect, and grow up with those who inflict it. It's about the heart, not politics. No hate here. You voted for Trump and want to talk what's bothering you about the world? I'm all heart even though I think if we were to distruct from the inside he would be included in the wrong side of that yet untold history. Those whose hearts are full of peace must lead, we must become a family and find a way to help those around us towards peace, love and solutions. As I sit with power out after an ice storm that is unusually strong for this area, and my local utility can't keep up while they continue to claim that fossil fuels are the immediate solution. I am filled with understanding for what comes, and gratitude that I spent a fair amount of my life bathed in comfort. Nothing amazing comes without a price. Time to question what home looks like in a big way beautiful humans around me, we can do this saving of earth thing, but seeing without blinders is key. Without blinders we can see this world for what it is right now and demand solutions. Scientists are telling us that we must act quickly, if I had money to put on it, I would bet that they are right. You love your parents and elders you do right by them, but certain things need to be placed outside of what you consider home when you heal, and when you dream of a future that is better. It's not always easy, but musicians like this give you the strength to do so, an embodiment of a stronger human spirit than any of us have individually can be found in music when the musicians are singing pure from the heart. So thank you for giving us keys to escape prison cells my dear friends, your voices are pure magic. Big thanks to these two beauties for being emotionally available. ❤️ There is something about rufus's voice that captures this beauty.
Unbelievable. I'm literally in tears filled with a nostalgic longing for a place I've never been and probably doesn't exist. If such a thing exists, this is probably as close to my soul song as possible. Thank you for this treasure of a song, Peggy Seeger. And thank you two for such a brilliant rendition, Rufus and John. This song is probably gonna be on constant rotation on my Spotify for the foreseeable future.
[Verse 1: John Legend] My face to the sky, my back to the wind Winter is entering my bones The day has been long and night's drawing in And I'm thinking of heading for home Yeah, I'm thinking of heading for home [Verse 2: Rufus Wainwright] The cradle and the grave, the fruit and the seed The seasons mirror my own The geese flying south are calling to me And I'm thinking of heading for home Yeah, I'm thinking of heading for home [Verse 3: John Legend and Rufus Wainwright] Always on the move with banner unfurled Yet gathering moss on the stone Oh, I sing for the children and cry for the world And I'm thinking of heading for homе Yeah, I'm thinking of heading for home [Verse 4: Rufus Wainwright] As timе's my old friend and death's my new kin I'm not taking this journey alone I am old, I am young, I am all that I've been And I'm thinking of heading for home Yeah, I'm thinking of heading for home
The memory of love will burn in my heart Till embers and ashes are gone The light in your window is my northern star And I'm thinking of heading for home And I'm thinking of heading for home And it's time I was heading for home And it's time I was heading for home

WOW! What a gorgeous song, with two wonderful voices. Radio 2 have played this a lot! It's going to be a classic for sure. So melancholy and beautiful and lyrical. Manages to sound old yet new!!
