whenever I come back to the us after each trip the things I notice are: how overweight and angry everyone is, how large the food portions are, how much the food is out of season, how cars are everywhere, and how much consumerism is pushed onto you every where you look. SO TRUE about the NYC stereotype. I went there for the first time 3 years ago, and I could even LOOK confused and New Yorkers would approach me and ask if I needed help figuring out the subway. Some of the most GENUINELY friendly people ever!
I am from NY and have no idea what you are talking about. Any one who lives in NYC knows that the subways and mass transit is littered with mentally ill homeless people if not drug addicts. People do not feel safe in NYC under DeBlasios leadership.
That is so true!!! My first impression of New Yorkers came from a black gentleman who literally stopped what he was doing and got out of his way (he was going the opposite direction I was) to show me where a particular store I was looking for was. He also made sure I knew how to go back to my hostel before leaving. 💝 I never forgot that, mainly because it happened on my first day in the US.
Early on in my experiences in NYC, I ended up driving the wrong way on a street. A trucker stopped me and said, 'Lady, let me help you before you kill someone.'' I still remember him with tremendous affection. It was like a NYC love poem.
The "No standing" signs are for vehicles, not pedestrians. We live in Brooklyn, upstate NY, and Miami Beach but fell in love with Portugal when we drove all over the entire country a few years ago. Thanks for these great videos!!!
As a New Yorker leaving in Florida for 6 years now I will tell you this is why I left and mind you I was born there. The stress alone can affect your health cause most people work “SEVERAL JOBS” with side hustles and still are barely maintaining to survive, it’s not a great place to raise kids either. There’s a lot of hype about NY until you experience living there…glad you guys could see the difference. Great video!
I’ve been in New York City for 11 years - I have run companies - lived all over. Happy to contribute to this great channel for those who may have NYC questions. Our Rich Journey handles the conversation of moving to Portugal the best. They also always keep balanced opinions. Happy to help.
Amon and Christina, welcome back to the US. I want to personally thank the both of you so, so, so much!!! I have learned so much financially from the two of you. In my opinion you're the best on UA-cam! Thanks again!
You were in my neighborhood when you visited NYU, though I am away now. Welcome! I agree on rents, it’s ridiculous. You can do better the further you move away from the center, and you can find special deals if you look hard, but you inevitably have to compromise in ways that people who live elsewhere would probably not imagine. Welcome again and love your channel! I just shared this one with a friend who is in the same space as me and in the process of getting to early retirement. Also, don’t forget to check out Columbia University.
I want to give you both hugs! You are so emotionally warm as a couple and have helped me so much on my fire journey. Richest blessings and please keep the financial videos coming!
You guys are literally my heroes. Every video is so motivating and I even started woodworking/learning to remodel since watching your videos. Keep up the hard work!!
I live neer to Lisbon and we've seen the rent prices double or triple in the last ten years. It's true that the prices are low for foreigners but that's what's making them impossible to pay for the portuguese people. The minimum wage in Portugal is 650 euros and an average rent for a 1 bedroom apartment is about ... 600 euros.
So sorry to hear. This is a real phenomenon globally. Places with really low cost of living is because local incomes are very low but foreigners earning money external to the local labour market capitalise on this.
Welcome back! My husband, my mother and I have purchased a home in Sao Miguel in The Azores, Portugal. Right now we spend a month in the summers there but we dream of living there full time. You guys are an inspiration!
@@OurRichJourney you must visit!! It's so amazing! We find something new and exciting to do every year (for free or next to no money)!! Everything you say is true about the country ❤
That wealth disparity you mentioned was the reason I left Brooklyn and moved to the south. People rather stay and struggle than move and start over. Then 10-15 years go by and they wonder why they have nothing. I don’t think Fire can be achieved in NYC ,maybe you can do a video on this at some point.
Absolutely can. You just have to invest in yourself, increase your salary and you’ll be all set. I can’t make the money I make here anywhere else and I saw a large portion of my salary. You can’t just do it if you’re making 50k per year here
Yeah, anywhere expensive is hard to reach fire. Just reaching capability to pay bills instead of paycheck to paycheck is hard when you live in a super expensive place…. Florida near panhandle. Yeesh. 💷💰💲💲💲💴💶💵💸💸💸
Reading this a year later. Hope all is well. I'm a Brooklyn girl, born & raised. I just love the city, but many friends have moved. Some to Fl, TX, GA or stayed Northeast like MA & PA. I would love to live elsewhere at least for 6 mths, but too many family responsibilities. Wish I could afford to take them with me. :)
Hey, guys. Glad to see your family visiting the US again. Regarding all the 'No Standing' signs you mentioned, they are meant for motorists. The intent is for traffic flow. Hope you enjoy your stay.
@@OurRichJourney Sadly parking is a huge commodity in NYC. By the way, while we love it here in New York City, we hope to join you in retirement in Portugal in 2 years.
@@OurRichJourney Haha I was going to comment on this too! No standing instead of no parking because a lot of people won't actually park- they either sit in the car with it on waiting for something or will straight up leave the car on with the emergency blinkers going to indicate they just needed to stop there quickly! Also, highly recommend (if you havent already) a walk through chinatown (not on canal street), hanging out in Washington Square Park (best people watching in the city),or a trip to the american museum on natural history (pro tip- you can pay what you want-even nothing- for the tickets even though the signs say like $26, it's a suggested donation)
@@OurRichJourney No standing refers to sitting in the car while it is parked on the side....parking means you don't have to be sitting in the car while it is parked.
I’m a server and part of the job is to pre-bus which is remove any empty plates from the tables. Even if someone else is still picking at their food. It just looks more presentable and makes room on the table for those that finished. 🙈 but I can definitely see why you would feel rushed. Eating out in nyc is expensive!! And I can’t even imagine living there and paying for rent. It’s a fun place to visit for sure!
I've been to NYC a couple years ago and I just loved it. However, I still prefer to live in Portugal. Portuguese people can be a bit dramatic about their country sometimes, but we're still the third safest country in the world, we have public healthcare and schools for everyone, 300 sunny days per year, great beaches and ofc great food. As much as I love to travel, it's always great to come back to my country. 😋 Beijinhos.
@@fckbigtech6779 that's incredibly rude. The problem is the systematic, societal racism of the Portuguese people who are by the way the most racist people I've encountered in my life and the irony here is that I'm a descendant of the Portuguese people. I'm also considered a black woman in America and have been to portugal twice. I also speak Portuguese fluently (all of its variations) and let me tell you the only two things I miss are the food and the tranquility of the north, specially Porto. If you never experienced their racism dont come on here and minimize it.
Great video. I've been following you for a while and starting my own FIRE journey thanks to you. My sister lives in Portugal too she loves the lifestyle there.
It happens anywhere and everywhere. I was born and raised in the Bay Area of CA. When I went to college in the early 90’s I went up north just a couple hours to live, study, and work basically in farm county. You could smell pigs, chickens, and horses. The pace of living was much slower, no traffic, and green valleys and hills everywhere. I then graduated, worked several more years, then moved back to the Bay Area. Traffic was horrendous, stress got higher, and everything I felt was very hypersensitive.
I thoroughly enjoy your content, it's really elevating my lifestyle ideas and mindset, I have always been interested in moving to Europe, and Portugal sounds like a great option thanks to you✨
I’m always enjoying your UA-cam and Instagram. I love your family.I feel beautiful & happiness vibes from you guys. I’m from South Korea ,used live in Osaka Japan for 5yrs then I moved to NY and spent 17yrs in there.and now I’m preparing move to Portugal.I already got the golden visa and waiting for biometric schedule.hopefully see you around in Portugal 🇵🇹 best wishes for you guys!
I gave been watching many videos about life in Portugal and watching you guys, I’m convinced more and more that Portugal is where I want to live !…Thanks guys sending my love to you and your lovely daughters!
Wow guys this is such a great video, i enjoyed ! I moved to portugal from the U.S. and have been living in Portugal for 4 years now. I have not returned to the U.S. just yet, but have been curious as to how it would feel to be back. My God, everything you guys discussed is so spot on! It just makes me feel even more grateful and happy for myself and my family to make the decision to live in Portugal. I honestly cannot see myself living in the states again. Best of luck to your beautiful family… keep bringing such great content. I love your videos!
LOL the "No Standing" sign is for cars. You as a person can stand anywhere , love it . There's levels to how long you can "park " your car. no stopping means not at all. no standing means you are only able to pick up and drop off passengers. no parking means you can pick up and drop off passengers and load and unload a vehicle. so happy you were able to visit NYC and see some of the stereotypes aren't true anymore. As with the parking NYC has many many rules and is very costly but there is so much to do.
You guys are truly amazing with your experiences from the US to Spain to Portugal. I watched almost every video. Im in South Africa and planning to relocate as soon as im ready. Portugal always popped up first on the list. I love the clean living and living off nature. Thank you once again 🙏🙏🙏
New Yorker here and longtime fan. Enjoyable video as always. I second what everyone is saying about the "No standing" signs. I suggest visiting Queens-- Jackson Heights for food, Long Island City for the beautiful skyline view of Manhattan (just a ferry ride across the East River!... Oh yeah, take the ferry to save money and get a great river cruise all around NYC for just 2.75 per person), attend a baseball game (Go Mets!). Also, get out to Dumbo (also accessible by ferry) for great views and some Ample Hills ice cream. ☀️Have a great rest of your stay!
@@OurRichJourney I second Jackson Heights, Queens. Take the 7 train to 74th street and walk parallel to the train tracks up to like 90th street. Great Latin American and Indian restaurants one after the other. You may not hear a lick of English while you are there.
I strongly second the ferry idea…particularly to Staten Island. Always brought out-of-towners there when they visited me. It’s free, views are great and if you time it just right, the return trip to lower Manhattan at dusk or night is breath taking. Nothing beats it and it’s free….
I’m from SF,CA. When my 2 daughters became 12, I planned a US HIstory Tour! NYC is the cultural capital of the US AND WORLD! we split our list and visited by proximity, Here’s our list not in order… -Staten Island Ferry (See Liberty free) - Ellis Island - Tenement Museum - 911 Memorial - Harlem Tour (AirBnB experiences) - Alexander Hamilton - Times Square - The MET (rooftop) + Central Pk - United Nations Building - Chinatown/Little Italy - High-Line Walk + Chelsea Pier - Grand Central Station
Awesome video and great reflections of your visit back and comparisons with Portugal. We are finishing up RV trip across America and planning our Europe trip next year. We have been so amazed at the AirBnB prices in most of the places we are going, especially Eastern Europe. Thanks and safe travels, John and Bev
Great video! I’ve also lived in Portugal for a year and am currently visiting the US which I love but I have a similar opinion when comes to having a great quality of life and better prices in Portugal. Have a great stay in NYC and good luck to her daughter on her decisions about schools. Best,
Please bare in mind Europeans tip too, but as an extra thank you, not as an obligation. You do it when the food is great or u are happy with the service. It's still appreciated by the waiters and staff, and it is polite. Never mandatory though. It is more of an expectation in Eastern Europe and turkey
I lived in Belgium and France. Yes “free” healthcare but wealthy people go to private hospitals for a reason. You don’t have to wait for surgery or scans as long.
@@xmaniac99 I already get free care through the VA so I understand but if you've watched their video when they were talking about it then you would also know that they don't have to worry about bills going to collections or other financial factors like the "sick" care of the U.S.
Love you guys! Unfortunately, it's a lot going on here and uncertainty. I have faith that things will get better and not worse. With that said, I'm loving the way you guys navigate this thing called "Life"! Stay Wise!
We retired and live in the Philippines. We went back for vacation to USA 2 years ago. We agree with you that prices in the USA are super high compared to other place. We cannot see ourselves living again in the USA anytime soon. Been here for 6 years now.
Thoroughly enjoyed this video! I was born in Manhattan, raised in Brooklyn, chose to go to high school in Chelsea (NY’ers have that option to choose any high school as a resident), and spent my summer in Queens. Left at 18 to Washington DC and been here ever since. I cannot imagine ever moving back to NYC. The cost of living is so high for such small space, and the class disparity is so rampant that it makes me sad to see not much is being done about it. I’m glad your forever home is in Portugal. I hope to find a forever home abroad myself. Safe travels ! 💕
DC doesn’t seem like a great place either, but I guess it depends on the area. The homeless there is increasing just like in NYC, SF, LA, Austin, and several other cities.
Glad you had a good time here in NYC (I'm in Brooklyn- much more affordable)! The no standing signs are referring to cars/trucks idling, not people standing there. Although we also like people to keep it moving on street.
Welcome back to US! Although it’s kinda crazy here, I hope you enjoy your stay here in NY. Everything is more expensive in the city but you’ll find cheaper options if you go farther. We live in Queens. Not a touristy area but friendlier for the wallet. P.s. I’ve been following you for almost a year and I thank you so much for the guidance. I’m just starting out on my journey after being unemployed for quite some time due the pandemic but I hope I reach the financial stability that I wish for everyone else.
Dear Christina and Amon - My husband and I were in the UK and then Portugal from 2017 and returned to the US this year March 2022, for a short time for personal reasons, Las Vegas to be precise! However we are longing to get back to Portugal as we just miss our friends and the lifestyle there, which was more to our liking. We are both fully retired and working on line, but the US has changed tremendously since our last stay .... we still love it very much but are saddened and disappointed with what we see and experience. Just a quick line from us to say also that we do enjoy your videos as we also learn a lot from it. Stay safe wherever you are ....
I got such a chuckle from your comment about overhearing conversations in NY. My husband and I are born/raised in NY, but we noticed this "louder talking"(??) phenomenon after our very first trip to Europe many years ago. Thank you for always staying positive! And for sharing so much helpful and inspiring info! 🤗
I related to overhearing as well, living in Eastern Europe and tune out the discussions, when I’m back home it’s like I’m hearing people talk for the first time. Sometimes when I heard the topics I consider it a benefit I don’t know the language well where I live
Portuguese from Lisbon leaving in New York and agree with everything you said! Although it will hurt a lot leave this country when I’m older I don’t think is feasible to pay afford this city on retirement savings and investments, especially if something were to happen to my health because medical costs here are unreasonable. So I hope I can do the same you did and move to alentejo later in life buy a cute house and enjoy a relaxed rest of life. Ohh and tipping can be annoying I obviously tip as generous as I can but I would rather pay more for eating out than to waitresses to rely on our tips for surviving while restaurants owners clean their hands on giving a them livable wage + benefits and contributing for that wage disparity. Much love to you and thanks for videos ❤️
One of the smartest ppl i have known for the past 2 years. Dont come back to USA because you have inspired us to do the exact same thing. (Leaving the US )
I agree with many points. I lived and work (for local companies) abroad twice (Africa and Asia). I would just add this: “Compare the comparables”: NYC to Paris or London. Not Lisbon to NYC (Manhattan)…
The “No Standing” signs refers to drivers parking their cars & waiting with a driver behind the wheel, not to individuals “standing” on the street. We do have a “loitering” rule but that refers to extended vagrancy in a particular spot. I’m a park person. My favorite place to send tourists is Madison Square Park, the home of the original Shake Shack. My wife recommends walking across the Brooklyn Bridge & roaming around in the “Heights”, i.e., Brooklyn Heights, which has some of the most attractive brownstone homes in NYC.
I’m happy Portugal makes you feel at home I moved to the UK but my heart remains in 🇵🇹 Would love to explore the US one day knowing I’ve got ticket back to Portugal
I live in the USA and it is hard to go back at my age but there is no place like Europe and Austria has my heart! Vem de visita, trabalha remotamente. Não te mudes para cá! Se arrependimento matasse...
We've switched places! I live in Brooklyn and am in Portugal for a week and a half. Finally having my GV appointment at the SEF. Once this visa goes through, I probably won't move to Portugal immediately, I'm not quite done with New York yet and, for some reason, I love this garbage city. But I'm really excited to have Portugal in the works so that the day I say "I'm done!" I'm done.
Please tell me you are not staying in the US permanently.. Your timing for your move was truly divine and you probably saved your family's lives and sanity! I pray that I can move my family out of here.
The "Ironbound" section of Newark, NJ has a fairly large Portuguese community with many nice restaurants. Of similar culture, the Tri-state has a sizeable Brazilian community...over 200, 000! .
Hey Christina and Amon, So glad you are exploring where I was born and raised (living in California now). Here are my favorite places whn I go home: The Oculus, The Vessel, Magnolia Bakery, Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall, Central Park, Museum of Natural History, The FlatIron Building, Lincoln Center/The Met, The Metropolitan Museum, The Guggenheim Museum, Highline Park, The Staten Island Ferry to see the great skyline of NYC, The Hamptons on Long Island, then Manhattan Bridge (far less tourists then the Bklyn Bridge), Brooklyn Heights, Clinton St Baking Shop for their famous pancakes, MOMA, Washington Square Park, Upper Wets Side, Harlem, Tribeca, Chinatown for the best Chinese food, Grand Central Station is an icon, it's a beautiful building, The Dumbo area, The Chrysler Building, Katz's Deli for great sandwiches, Breakfast at La Parisenne, 911 Memorial is sombering but stunningly surreal, moving and important, Freedom Tower -go to the Observation Tower ($35 person though--kind of pricey), Wall Street/Federal Hall, Eataly--if you like Italian food, Bryant Park, SoHo, Los Tacos for great tacos! Hope that helps--there is so much more --but it's my favorite spots. Stay safe my friends!
I haven't been in NYC since 1963. For me, it's still too soon to go back. I live in western NY, about 300km west of the Big Apple. My brother and his wife live in Portugal and haven't been back for almost 3 years. I expect he'll have the same impressions.
@Dave Schmarder I used to live in WNY in East Aurora, Hamburg and Orchard Park. What town do you live in? I live in Creedmoor, NC now which is about 15 mins east of Durham, NC.
I have been a New Yorker all my life. I was born in Manhattan and lived in all the 5 boroughs. I have some suggestions to visit: Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, the Bronx Zoo, New York Aquarium, Coney Island amusement park with the famous Nathan's Franks, the Roosevelt Island Tramway, Museum Mile on Fifth Avenue, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Empire State Building, Central Park, and the Long Island beaches. I may be late to the video. You can use the ideas, next time you visit New York City.
I'm glad you had a nice experience in NYC! I was bracing for all the negative reports. No regular person pays $9000 for a two bedroom apartment. If you go to the outer boroughs like Brooklyn and Queens you can get a 1 or two bedroom for 2k. If your daughter goes to school in NYC, you should consider renting a 3 or 4 bedroom apartment and rent rooms to other students. Maybe you can leave a room empty for when you guys visit. That's a much better option than the dorms in my opinion. Thanks for sharing!
YAY Portugal.... meu Lindo país! I'm so happy you are enjoying your experience with us, we're very hospitable, friendly people💝🇵🇹 tudo de bom para vocês 🙏
The "No Standing anytime" signs actually refer to cars not people lol. It should mean that you can't stop your car there and just wait in the car or linger in your car with the engine on. I'm in Europe and haven't been back to the US in over 3 years! So it's interesting to see your impressions. I'm also in an area where I don't speak the language (French) so I'm excited to visit the US soon and connect with people around. I'll look out for the sensory overdrive :) Thanks for sharing!
Welcome to NYC, our home. My sister and I are twins and we have been watching you guys for two years and have encouraged us on this financial journey. Thank you very much. We were born and raised in Hell’s Kitchen, we live in upper Manhattan now, close to the Bronx, and we are both teachers. Yes the disparity in NYC is real, especially where we both work, so as African American teachers we try to instill excellence with our students encouragement to parents and just be real with our students. Things to do: Have you visited Governor’s Island? I like taking my students cool, you can bike ride, the slides and hammocks and great and the views are wonderful. Food wise: If you like Jamaican food go to Negril or Ms. Lily’s. Martha’s bakery is really great as well.
While you're here, I would definitely visit Harlem. There's Langston Hughes's home, the Apollo Theatre, and a number of other different spots. And--the food. The energy is definitely something to be experienced.
Great video! You should compare your living to Portugal to living in Cincinnati, Ohio, Richmond, VA, Pittsburgh, Sacramento, etc. New York is such an outlier. I went to Bishkek Kyrgyzstan, took me almost 2.5 hours to eat my meal (slow service) ☺️☺️
Hi guys, really enjoyed your observations about NYC. I worked there for a number of years and loved it but I think the problems in the US now overwhelm the good things (of which there are many). It's clear that the quality of life in Europe is unmatched (I grew up in French culture and travel regularly to France and Belgium). I look forward to trips around Europe you guys may make in the future to hear your observations and how you budgeted for these.
I just want to express my gratitude to you both. I stumbled across your channel two years ago and have been hooked ever since. My HSA and other investment accounts are looking good bc of what you've taught me.
Latic Heart - I agree. But it might still be good for the older daughter, if she wants to attend NYC. It's a good school, and as long as there's no going into student loan debts (can't see that happening with this family), I say let her experience it. It will be even sweeter when school breaks come around, and she can travel back home, overseas.

Absolutely can. You just have to invest in yourself, increase your salary and you’ll be all set. I can’t make the money I make here anywhere else and I saw a large portion of my salary. You can’t just do it if you’re making 50k per year here
Might be a good video! Thanks Vendetta!
Haha! We have now seen multiple comments about this! LOL! So confusing! Hehe! Why not, no parking? LOL!
This made me smile as a NY'er. Lol :)
Beijinhos.
Saudades da comida de Portugal.
Totalmente de acuerdo. Portugal es un país maravilloso y los mejores vecinos que se pueda soñar. Totalmente enamorada de Portugal.
@@MsFlyingUnicorn which country took y’all spot?
We have public healthcare if you don’t die waiting for surgery.
I just finalised my Portuguese visa and you guys were a major inspiration!!
good luck!!
Very cool!!!! ❤️
The “energy” you experienced coming to NY is actually stress.
LOL!!
Yep
Yes sir. I live in Miami it is my home town and I can't leave fast enough.
Why I'm so happy to be working from home from now on :)
Lot's of things have changed; not in a good way.
Absolutely love ur videos!!
Great video. I've been following you for a while and starting my own FIRE journey thanks to you. My sister lives in Portugal too she loves the lifestyle there.
That is fantastic that you started your FIRE journey Yvonne!!!
You went to one of the most expensive cities in the US. It is definitely a culture shock. Everyone adjust to the lifestyle they want.
New York City is a culture shock to most people in the US, never mind people coming from abroad, LOL
Reverse culture shock is real, I experienced it after just four months in Costa Rica
Yes! We had the same experience after going back to California after living in Japan for several years!
I thoroughly enjoy your content, it's really elevating my lifestyle ideas and mindset, I have always been interested in moving to Europe, and Portugal sounds like a great option thanks to you✨
Wow! Thank you so much for saying that Stephanie!!!❤️
De nada! You're welcome✨
Aww, that is so kind of you to say! Thank you so much Aaron!
What’s the biometric appointment for? Fingerprints?
Welcome to Portugal
I´m so glad that your beautiful family are coming back to Portugal! Really hope you will have a happy and wonderful life in my (our) Portugal!
Back in Portugal and loving it here!!!❤️
@@OurRichJourney So you guys are back in Portugal again?
Every business you visit that had a sign begging for tips is an admission that they don't pay their employees a living wage
What would be a socialist living wage? $10, $20 , $50, $100 + an hour?
Especially in New York
Because businesses have been making so much money lately
No things cost to much
@@TopVillain yeah nope. Many places have had higher wages for decades and this never happened. Facts matter not misinformation.
I gave been watching many videos about life in Portugal and watching you guys, I’m convinced more and more that Portugal is where I want to live !…Thanks guys sending my love to you and your lovely daughters!
So glad you are staying in Portugal. I love your videos and love how much love and appreciation you show to Portugal!
Thank you Manuela!!!
It's official. No way can I ever drive in NYC! I don't even know the rules! LOL! Thanks for watching Shaina!!!
Wow I never heard of that before, but I'm from the country all we have is a Wal-Mart. I legit thought it was for people like loitering.
Lol
Lots of great suggestions! Thank you so much!!!
@@OurRichJourney I second Jackson Heights, Queens. Take the 7 train to 74th street and walk parallel to the train tracks up to like 90th street. Great Latin American and Indian restaurants one after the other. You may not hear a lick of English while you are there.
i second the jackson heights recommendation. i believe it is the most diverse zip code in the country. you'll find every cuisine over there
I strongly second the ferry idea…particularly to Staten Island.
NYC is the cultural capital of the US AND WORLD! we split our list and visited by proximity, Here’s our list not in order…
-Staten Island Ferry (See Liberty free)
- Ellis Island
- Tenement Museum
- 911 Memorial
- Harlem Tour (AirBnB experiences)
- Alexander Hamilton
- Times Square
- The MET (rooftop) + Central Pk
- United Nations Building
- Chinatown/Little Italy
- High-Line Walk + Chelsea Pier
- Grand Central Station
Awesome video and great reflections of your visit back and comparisons with Portugal. We are finishing up RV trip across America and planning our Europe trip next year. We have been so amazed at the AirBnB prices in most of the places we are going, especially Eastern Europe. Thanks and safe travels, John and Bev
RVing across America and next up n Europe! So cool John and Bev!!!
As a native New Yorker who lives in Manhattan, I found this to be an incredibly accurate description of the city. 👌
Thank you!!!
Always a pleasure watching you guys!
Aww, thank you so much!!!!
"No Standing" lol your interpretation was funny. Glad someone already explained it!
What a lovely family though. Your daughters are rich regardless of your wealth. You have conversations with them. 🙏🥰
Aww, thank you so much!!!❤️
I think the "No Standing" signs are for cars, not people. Meaning you cannot stop your running car and block the road.
Great video! I’ve also lived in Portugal for a year and am currently visiting the US which I love but I have a similar opinion when comes to having a great quality of life and better prices in Portugal.
Have a great stay in NYC and good luck to her daughter on her decisions about schools. Best,
Thank you Siglia!!!
Please bare in mind Europeans tip too, but as an extra thank you, not as an obligation. You do it when the food is great or u are happy with the service. It's still appreciated by the waiters and staff, and it is polite. Never mandatory though. It is more of an expectation in Eastern Europe and turkey
If y'all come back to the states bring the Portuguese health system with y'all lol.
Wouldn't that be lovely if we could do that?!!!
Healthcare there is 2 tier, if you got money you get the best care or can come to the USA and get it done
@@elizabethwilk9615 do you think the private care system in Belgium and France is much better than the public health system there?
The "No Standing" sing applies to Cars and other vehicles, not humans lol that made me chuckle
ty smh
Thanks, I assumed it meant “No Loitering.”
Glad you got a laugh! LOL!
I chuckled too, LOL. Welcome to the Big Apple 🍎
Love you guys! Unfortunately, it's a lot going on here and uncertainty. I have faith that things will get better and not worse. With that said, I'm loving the way you guys navigate this thing called "Life"! Stay Wise!
Yes, navigating life! Hehe! Thanks for watching Francine!!!
We retired and live in the Philippines. We went back for vacation to USA 2 years ago. We agree with you that prices in the USA are super high compared to other place. We cannot see ourselves living again in the USA anytime soon. Been here for 6 years now.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is stunning.
YES! We went there - AMAZING!!!
Everything about your channel is an inspiration and you two have such a lovely, warm energy and presence.
So sweet of you to say! Thank you Angelique!!!
Welcome Back!
Thank you!!!
Even the poor people in NYC have the latest iPhone.
Glad you had a good time here in NYC (I'm in Brooklyn- much more affordable)! The no standing signs are referring to cars/trucks idling, not people standing there. Although we also like people to keep it moving on street.
I really hope we weren't the only ones to make that assumption! LOL!
It depends where in Brooklyn! But their observations for Manhattan are definitely correct.
@@OurRichJourney not alone, I made that assumption as well when I first moved to NYC
Thank you! We enjoyed our stay!!!
Very interesting hearing about what's happening in your family's lives. I hope you make another one of these from NY before you go back home.
Aww, thank you so much!!!
So glad you came back for a visit but happier that you two plan to keep Portugal as your home base. Enjoy your visit and stay safe👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
O Alentejo fica esperando
Portugal is such a beautiful country.
One of the smartest ppl i have known for the past 2 years. Dont come back to USA because you have inspired us to do the exact same thing. (Leaving the US )
I literally just smile watching you guys!!!! This was such a great video!!!!! Welcome back!!! Have a great trip and safe travels✈️🌏🙏🏽🙌🏽
I agree with many points. I lived and work (for local companies) abroad twice (Africa and Asia). I would just add this: “Compare the comparables”: NYC to Paris or London. Not Lisbon to NYC (Manhattan)…
But we came to NYC . . . and we live in Portugal.
I love hearing about y’all journey. Y’all give me hope. 🙂
Thank you Ann!❤️
You have NO IDEA how much i love your videos

I live in the USA and it is hard to go back at my age but there is no place like Europe and Austria has my heart! Vem de visita, trabalha remotamente. Não te mudes para cá! Se arrependimento matasse...
You guys rock and inspire. I have a long way to go...but it is good to have a role model to follow. You have inspired a lot of people.
"Garbage city"? LOL! Too funny!
Please tell me you are not staying in the US permanently.. Your timing for your move was truly divine and you probably saved your family's lives and sanity! I pray that I can move my family out of here.
FYI, "No standing" refers to cars stopping and waiting with someone still inside. It doesn't mean pedestrians
Haha! Thanks Katie! I guess we would fail a driver's license test here! LOL!
Cars can't stand. They need a better expression.

Hey Christina and Amon,
So glad you are exploring where I was born and raised (living in California now).
Yes! It-s so strange coming back to the US after being gone for a while!

@@eltigre5469 I’ve been to NYC already but I don’t want to go back now. If I had to choose NYC or Portugal I would choose Portugal in a heartbeat!
Olá, as vossas opiniões são sempre muito interessantes. Boas férias e façam-nos sonhar...

Thanks for sharing your vision! Loved to hear about it. Hoping you all are safe by the way! Seeing some crazy footage from NY on tv.
Yes, thank you! All is well with us! We are back in Portugal now!
Good to hear! Welcome back to Europe!
I was looking for this comment 😂

And the rent prices are much different than Chelsea! 😎😎😎. I think that's a better comparison to start with.
Also the National Jazz Museum in Harlem and the famous stoop where the photo of all the jazz musician was taken! In addition to many other things.
Careful in Harlem- there ia a lot of crime- robberies, rape, assault and murder. I used to live there. I was scared for my life almost every day.
Hi Guys! Welcome back! Keep living y'all's Best Life!
Maybe we can gather more info from our followers on Insta! it would be a good comparison!

Thanks Fam! And yes, Portugal has already grown on us!
I agree with how friendly New Yorkers are to tourists, I'm from Portugal and visited NY a few years ago and loved it.
This just encouraged me to invest more. I've been lazy, but now I need to get back to invest a significant amount each month. Thanks for this video!!
Thanks for saying us New Yorkers are nice! FYI - those "no standing anytime" signs mean that vehicles cannot park and/or idle in those locations.
I believe the no standing sign is for cars! They can’t be parked on the street
Really? I feel like they should write No Parking! LOL!
Parking is leave the car and walk away. No standing is when you still sitting in the car. Loll
