I admire Robert Reich because he is an intellect and an adult. He supported Bernie Sanders despite that he clearly sees Bernie's weakness. "Bernie Sanders is incapable of anything but indignation". I think this is probably not just a joke but an insightful observation and a sharp criticism toward Bernie. He's a talented political movement leader but likely a poor administrator, to which Hillary Clinton is the exact opposite.
Reich is clearly a very important intellectual who has much more to contribute to government. However I do not agree that "Bernie Sanders is incapable of anything but indignation". Robert forgets that Bernie is capable of attracting huge crowds to his presentations of what is needed in the USA to make it more fair and just. His work with the Veterans' Administration was far sighted and valuable and his recent leadership on the question of our involvement in the Saudi Arabian war against Yemen. He should not be faulted became he was not able to dissuade Congress on the question of the war against Iraq. Sander's indignation fuels a large and progressive movement to make important and much needed changes in our two party system that has done so much to fuel and support the Neoliberal movement which has done so much to separate this country into the poor and the extremely rich. This is not the time for Progressives to allow or encourage internecine war.
I love Dr. Reich. He brilliantly describes the trump phenomenon. He said exactly my thinking about bringing manufacturing jobs back to America. That horse has left the stable, and we will have to think long and hard about that. How do we compete with lower wage countries like Mexico, Philippines, Gina, etc. Thankful we have thinkers like Robert Reich. Rise up America.
Has it left the stable or Was it sold of by someone that didn't want to keep it anyway? Production is not as simple as people who don't work in those sectors tend to believe. And low wage countries have countless issues of their own. I strongly believe that Western countries could be far more efficient, innovative and competetive than they are now. We just have a completely overblown bureaucracy in state and corporations. We could easily fullfill people's basic needs with half the public spending if the money Was distributed efficiently. The other important point is the absolutely insane allocation of our demographic potential. Universities and colleges were turned into degree mills for completely mediocre people and many people don't take them serious anymore. Because you don't need to be able to articulate yourself in a proper manner. You don't need to be an open minded, self reflected and critically thinking person to receive a degree. Sometimes academics leave university even more narrow minded and opinionated than they started Meanwhile we have a severe shortage of technicians, trades people, truckers etc. People with their feed on the ground being able to move, repair and build things.
You evidently know a lot, you are sure of it, without ANY evidence. You also appear to have a little too much hero worship for Bernie Sanders and a inordinate conspiracy theorist's hatred of Hillary. You think you know more about Clinton than Sanders does, without evidence. Hatred and conspiracy theories are not evidence.
I don't have any patience with these Hillary haters. They really need to learn to deal with the real world. I supported Sanders and gave $1,000 to his campaign, but once he lost I reoriented to the new reality - like a grown up. The Sanders campaign started as a message candidacy. If he would have started a year earlier, which he would have done if he was really running to win from the beginning, the outcome might have been different. It is possible Bernie would not have accepted the VP spot (I'm not sure), but I don't think he was asked.
Perhaps the biggest take home lesson, IMHO, is that while Trump himself is a huge problem, even more, he's a symptom of underlying problems. Reich's historical ties to the Clinton wing of the party blinds him to the extent to which this is true. Clinton is not simply establishment. She's herself deeply corrupt, but Reich refuses to see this. Even Bernie Sanders, who is the object of Clinton's corrupt election fraud, doesn't see it to the extent to which it's true.
I have departed from classic conservatism when it comes to the economy and military. I believe that in our new economy we need univ basic income plus univ health care as a safety net for all citizens. I say this while maintaining a distrust for big government proclivity to become more authoritarian as it grows more powerful. I believe we need a European style taxation on corporations which more accurately reflect the economic activity of companies like Amazon and other multinationals who have profited from globalism while the middle class was being hollowed out. I believe the progressives infringement on free speech vis a vis hate speech and a culture of political correctness is one of the greatest threats to an open free civil society. True tolerance does not presuppose agreement or else there is nothing to tolerate. When certain groups talk about safe spaces and hate speech, I see a disingenuous tolerance. I believe the establishment (particularly the conservatives but most liberals too), are in bed with the military and big business complex along with intelligence services and think tanks. The military interventions to facilitate coups, regime change in the name of democracy, posturing and positioning to ensure world hegemony despite a changing world, is to usually ineffective, always grossly expensive, and sometimes immoral. I believe traditional media is biased but that was a good thing for most of our history since that made them subversive. But now traditional news media reflects the majority. This reduces their utility since their bias now contributes to corruption rather than being a bulwark against it. I believe we need common traditional news sources to help us know what is fact, to build consensus, and to navigate between conserving and progressing as a society. I support strong borders because they are vital to the accountability of the government to its citizens. I also think legal immigrants have had an overwhelmingly positive effect on the prosperity and health of our society. I reject conservative ideas about the economy, taxes, and entitlements. I also reject the progressive narrative with its inane moralizing, Orwellian speak, and toxic identity politics. I reject both political parties for their corruption and foreign policies. Who do I vote for in 2026??
What you mentioned is the social democrat position which is a very old Position in europe. A relatively free market economy with private property rights and competition and a basic social safety net. Meritocracy was seen as something good. People shouldn't be denied health care or live in material deprivation. On the other hand people held you in very low esteem if you took more than you provided or received welfare even if you were strong and healthy. It was a more balanced and pragmatic political view point. But modern day progressivism is now all about hating and blaming white people for everything and normalising lazyness and responsibility, while rejecting personal responsibility and meritocracy. And that just isn't sustainable
Marx??? is dead.... further more...there is no American "left" there is extreme right, and moderate conservatives like this Reich, and president Obama... and do remember extreme right and extreme left are the same...idiotic populism would be the proper name for it... Hitler and Stalin and Mao did the same kinds of things...murder millions, lie, steal and slander... ...now the kingdome of the usa is on the brink...will it survive, or will it fall and fail like China did, Russia did, Germany once did... we will see,,, kingdoms fall and raise agin...
yes, it's a government doing the bidding of the one percent which it began doing during Reagan. I am not talking free market. We had the world's largest middle class due to the new deals of the 40's, which were largely federally funded government programs.
NAFTA helped agricultural areas, but technology has killed manufacturing. Deregulation is killing a lot of coal miners and ruining a large part of the water supply.
Please stop. Teach Economics to all the button up up. Parents and teachers need to innovate and teach Economics. Please study agenda 21/30 . It is time to change things. Also, Richard Saul Wurman.
Reich should run for President. He is wonderful in how he can explain issues and how he can expound on what America is truly about. I love this man.
great job, Robert Reich! wish you could run for President! you are a kind, gentle man! thank you
He could. He won't. He's not venal enough.
Robert Reich is brilliant, how I wish I could have been there.
hes a pro democratic party [big money] globalist.
rd264 - he was a clear Sanders supporter till Hillary won the nomination, stop with the buzzwords
I nominate Prof. Reich for Nobel Peace Prize, if not Economics; for enlightening the masses.
Hear, hear!
Bernie Sanders and “Our Revolution”
I would love to see Reich run for office
Trump would make a good dog catcher. I think President is a stretch.

Another remarkable academic thought leader who, I think, clearly sees the situation in the US and discusses it without twisting the facts.
A very good teacher; We have to be active unionists to stress for real democracy.
Thank you!

Progressive movement has strong momentum. ❤️🇺🇸
Easy thing Clinton could have done would be to make Sanders her running mate.
Forget Hilary. Sanders shouldve joined Jill Stein.
That is hilarious.

Whippersnapper Reich overlooks the neocon grip on both parties. I dont share his youthful fondness for Hill of Beans nor his ever bouyant optimism.
Must teach the school
Of economics. To all .

5:00 Reich
Not just forty days. But 40 nights of insane tweets too.😂
1:21:58 LOL
Off course he was right... He caused the chaos!
32:17 - Leave it to the American "left" to mention universal basic income without ever mentioning Karl Marx.

Didn't mention MLK either and he was pro-Universal Basic Income
7u👍💚
ANTI BIG GOVERNMENT.
You propose greater government control and intervention in keeping with your socialist agenda.
America had the biggest middle class in the world because of government programs.
