It's McCartney's early solo work that makes you realise just how much of the Beatles' studio years was his vision. Greatest mainstream songwriter ever.
Yep, obviously Lennon was the inferior of the two. Insecure small minded rat is the phrase that strikes me as best describing Lennon after his public attacks on Linda. All power to Paul.
Paul was more mainstream than John. Thats all he says. Does'nt mean the one is better than the other. Its really hard to write higvwuality music that at the same time is mainstream. And i'd agree; McCartney probably did that better than any one...

Well said GenesisSyn. It's a well made Doc. By the way, is genesis a tribute to the band of the same name.. That's definitely a band worth checking out.
Never in the history of music has an artist made critics eat their words so thoroughly than Sir Paul McCartney. They will be listening to RAM five hundred years from now.
This really should. This whole series is worthy being heavily featured on streaming services and channels like Hulu, Netflix, Roku, etc. So much time and toil, and most importantly LOVE, was put into this and it shows.
@@allenf.5907 Jann Wenner eventually feel out of favor with John Lennon too. After that he completely turned on Paul, and began praising Paul`s solo work. I think he gave "Band on the run" five out of five and called it a masterpiece. The same thing happen when Paul released "Tug of war" Five out of five.
I was a room service waiter at a five star hotel for 15 years. I met many celebrities. Paul was the coolest. Wish I'd had been able to get over being so star struck to hold an actual conversation. I pretty much just stuck to the basic script. 'Where shall I set it up? Here is your order'. I felt like an idiot. Paul was extraordinarily awesome though. He said the word 'cool' numerous times, and he even said my name. I shook his hand, told him it was a pleasure meeting him, and wished him a nice day. Five minutes I will treasure for the rest of my life.
I've always been a Paul fan. This does not mean that I have ever put down John, George or Ringo. But a lot of fans, especially John fans, tend to denigrate Paul, for some reason, even way back at the beginning of the fandom. I remember people calling him shallow. Paul McCartney? The composer of Eleanor Rigby? The composer of Hey Jude, and Let It Be? Were they crazy? Anyway, this is a great documentary. Thanks.
It was Paul's drive, enthusiasm and diplomatic skills that kept The Beatles together for longer than could have been expected. He was the one that was most concerned about leaving a memorable legacy behind after the eventual breakup. He was the glue that kept them together long enough for them to record "Let It Be" and "Abbey Road". We owe him a great debt of gratitude.
It's really hard to describe what's wrong with Paul's music. He's clearly a musical savant, a genius who has created some undeniably beautiful music. But much of his work is somehow "off", just missing the target by a few degrees. Many adjectives capture part of what's out of place, words like florid, ornate, fruity. Listen to "The Long and Winding Road." It's like it was written by committee, periodically dipping into the "wistful yearning" bag of hooks, trying to sound symphonic and profound. But in trying to make another "Hearts and Flowers" via a shotgun wedding between Stravinsky and Ravel, it ends up a meandering patchwork of gimmicks with no cohesive theme. Does that clarify things? Of course not. It's a description of Paul's music - nonsense. His music always improved after passing through the filter of John Lennon. Like Paul, John was a genius, but of a different sort. His music was just the sort of misanthropic sucker punch that Paul's writing needed. John's solo compositions like "Imagine" or "Dream" would have benefitted from Paul's sweetening influence. They worked it to perfection in The Beatles, but I suspect that egos were a bit too influential in the latter years. Oh well, let's be thankful for what we DID get - A Day in the Life, for example.
I think it just boils down to personal taste. Some people relate more to John as the "tortured artist" and thus "get" John's music because it might seem more deep and personal. He does seem to be more of a poet lyrically, I love the imagery in "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" so much. It's obvious that John's very complicated love, jealousy, and resentment of his brother/friend Paul made some fans take his feelings upon themselves and be anti-Paul for decades. Paul didn't deserve that. As a musician myself I actually find Paul's songs generally more profound and interesting in a musical sense. His lyrics might have had less of himself personally BUT his music also has extremely brilliant technique, quality, beauty, positivity, likability, etc. I mean "Eleanor Rigby" and "Helter Skelter" and "Lady Madonna" and "Let It Be" are all written by the same man. Like, how can anyone say this man is shallow???? Paul's talents cannot be understated--the man is a genius in every sense of the word.
@@thesilvershining I actually find more of Paul’s lyrics truly poetic and thought-provoking. I’ve had the lyrics to “Let Me Roll It” stuck in my head for a while because the image of one’s heart being a wheel-something in you that you can’t really read, spinning-and the feeling of being incapable of giving voice to it but wanting to just roll it over to the other person? So they’ll finally understand? I love it. (And then the possible double meanings of rolling a joint to share, or rolling one’s hips toward a sexual partner, and “loving in the palm of my hand” suggesting both the vulnerability of someone placing power over their heart in someone else’s hands and also just suggesting a physical act-I just think it’s got this really intriguing mixed vibe of intimate, playful, and plaintive.) I guess I like that a lot of Paul’s lyrics invite “close readings.” But I think I relate to a lot of his themes: nostalgia, regret, emotional disconnect from reality or difficulty communicating feeling, wanting things to be made whole, loneliness, empathy for others. John’s music doesn’t feel “deeper”, just more direct and focused on sharper, angrier emotions: pain, disillusionment, paranoia, and criticism of the world, criticism of the self, obsessive love (but also, making peace with that love, making peace with the self and with expectations). And musically, it’s more consistent in sound. Rocky in a way that’s clearly nostalgic for the 50s, but still very 70s rock with a lot of either piano or saxophone and reverb. Compositionally I think his songs are more easily digestible, verse chorus verse chorus. Hit material. Paul musically is just all over the place (even within one song) and in general he’s more hit or miss. Maybe sometimes he gets a little too cute or overwrought or sentimental, but when it works it works, and his body of work taken as a whole is great. He almost reminds me of The Arcade Fire, which is an indie band that started in the 2000s; they change a lot from album to album, but they tend to have a lot of instrumentation, a quirky and sometimes bittersweet sound. Absolutely love them. They do pack a harder punch though at their best, I think, even while hitting on similar themes as Paul. But idk, I do find Paul really moving and I remember as an angsty teen like weeping to “Golden Slumbers” lol. (The line, “Once there was a way to get back home” is just so simple but so devastating and poignant in a way that feels non-specific but personal.) I’m tempted to go through and find and list my favorite/most moving Paul songs now.
Where are all those critics today. Paul's still going and nobody in history has done what Paul McCartney has done with his amazing drive within him for experimental music and His adaption to the changes of music over the decades. History shines well on paul.
Guess you’ve never heard of Brian Wilson. But to each his own. I enjoy both as composers and writers, though Wilson touches deeper in my spirit and soul
Darien E I hear ya I enjoy McCartney.. but for me McCartney hasn’t done anything as deeply beautiful as Smile or Pet sounds. For me Brian Wilson belongs in the same conversation as Mozart, Tschosivsky, Baudelaire, Beethoven, Gershwin and all the great innovative composers.. Wilson is the Mozart of Pop music. But again to each his own and whatever makes you happy my friend, no reason why we can’t enjoy both right?
I first heard "Ram" with headphones, and i had a religious moment. The harmonies and vocal arrangements completely blew me away. Paul was ahead of time when he made "Ram" For me "Ram" is Paul`s absolute masterpiece. The whole album is beautiful, and so varied. It`s also ends with one of the most underrrated Paul McCartney songs ever. "The back seat of my car" is a gem. It`s too bad it wasn`t a single in the U.S. because it would have got to no.1.
His first two solo albums were savaged by the critics. Years later critics hailed them as "low-fi" and "indie" classics. This is what I already knew as a 14 year old when they came out. Music critics are the most useless form of life. Rolling Stone has been a joke for decades.
Just take a look at Rolling Stone's top 100s - songwriters, guitarists etc. - risible. Music critics and journalists parade their likes and dislikes as objective critique.
Funny, maybe the critics hated it, but I vehemently remember that everyone I knew played Ram on their Magnovox record player a million times that summer. I adore this record!!
Not everyone I knew had a Magnavox...but we had one of their big console stereos with 12 inch woofers and horn tweeters. You'd better believe it played RAM. Loudly! RAM might be lyrically goofy, but musically it's among Paul's best albums. You can hear a guy who's feeling pretty good about his life setup on this record. If he got a little carried away, good for him.
I was lucky to have never read any reviews at that time because I decided on my own that his first 2 albums were imperfect masterworks. I had friends that hated Paul’s music because he supposedly broke up The Beatles. Their loss.
My Mom bought Ram along with a few others when she got us are first record player, i played Ram the most out of the stuff she bought and it's still my fave album of Paul's , so underappreciated!
Just finished watching Ep 1. This is a masterpiece the best documentary on a beatle since the 1995 TV Anthology. Well done you should feel extremely proud.
Isn't this so great...? I can't thank Breatless345 enough for how all these were put together and posted for our upmost enjoyment. I just love all of it especially the pacing and flow of the stories and many snippets of information running so smoothly. I can come back to these over and over and enjoy at anytime. Thank - U so much..:) You should win an award really.
just finished his understanding lennon mccartney documentary series - magnificent work. good companion piece to get back where you can see how Jackson has edited a lot of the sniping out of get back sessions for his documentary though obviously closer to reality than let it be , get back is designed to remove a lot of tensions, which is fair enough. Maybe one day we will see and hear all. doubt it though.
Who is the guy behind these films because he needs an award for the time it must of taken him. The Beatles stuff was the best thing I've seen since 'The Compleat Beatles'. WHO ARE YOU?????
You know, it's really great that these are clearly made for FANS, not for the general public. It's so tiring to hear the same basic stuff one knows by heart re-told in Beatles documentaries lol.
Just watched the first episode, fantastic! Love the quote about RAM "We don't wanna make music for the times, We wanna make music for the future!" Prophetic, as RAM is now regarded among many critics as his best work. Of course RAM sold well back then too, so the fans had already caught on. Just took the critics a few decades to figure it out, lol.
Everyone loved the Beatles for pushing boundaries and making people change how they think. Most people didn't understand Paul's most radical concept: Love and Family.
@Sofa King this take is genuinely insane given that the only reason he isn't married to Linda after decades of a happy marriage and four children is because she passed away
It is incredible and almost unimaginable how much work you put into these documentaries... You are FANTASTIC for putting this out there. I think this video (from what I have watched so far) really shows how misunderstood Paul is. He has went through so much, and many don't know it. He lost a mother, has lost countless friends, had his albums mocked and rejected, and struggled through depression as all of the other Beatles turned against him. He was made to look like the bad guy when he was the one putting in the effort and just doing the best that he could. He is a genius and such a strong soul for going through what he has been through. This is god's work you're doing, thank you for sharing this knowledge to the world and showing people the TRUE McCartney.
He’s gritty and determined and is having a hell of a life. ❤ He didn’t punch a reporter he threw a pail at him because the guy came onto his property out in the sticks.
4:44 I love how Lennon states he's learned a lot of work ethic, determination, and perseverance from McCartney, and how this brilliantly segues into the episode's title by essentially presenting its thesis: to carry on through hardship so you might break free and rise out of the ashes on the other side.
If it wasn’t for Paul the Beatles would have lost a big part of their fortune, because he was smart enough to see that Allen Klein was a crook. Paul fought In court to keep the Beatles fortune and won. Lennon even admitted years later that Paul was right about Klein.
This man is just... he's a beautiful person inside and out, he's a total inspiration, I can't even begin to express how much I admire and respect this person. His positive energy, his passion, his speech, his love, his creativity, his voice, his beliefs. He's a person filled with good feelings and good vibes, positivity, joy... and all that while being a musical genius and while having to get a lot of shit he didn't deserve. He's a legend but he is a good person above all, the biggest and rarest quality someone can have.
Isn't it astonishing....the idea that you just wake up, get out of bed and do something as brilliantly as that. Time after time after time. Defying the odds, defying the situation, producing not only the goods but the good that remain remembered forever. You've really captured that already after one episode.
This documentary is of such stunning high quality in every aspect it will become the benchmark, gold standard, whatever the expression is on Macca. As I was watching it I was thinking where the hell has this been all my Beatle loving life! Happy birthday Paul and shame on you Rolling Stone.
@UCO8Pc1YcbQpcCw6iMo0wSEQ You wouldn't know Muzak from your left foot. Are you a musicologist? Do you write and perform music? ROLLING STONE was almost always clueless or misguided. Wenner was a jealous turd, and you sound a lot like that yourself.
9:09 Having "Maybe I'm Amazed", often regarded as one of Paul's finest songs, as a backdrop to the critics' opinions. The contrast just accentuates how out of touch and ridiculous it all seems! Vultures circling indeed.
@@Mrpaulaustin08 The early 1970s were a time when "serious music fans," rock music critics, and many hippies believed all musicians should use their bully pulpits for affecting social and political change. Or at least posturing about it, like Lennon's Imagine. The critics of the time also favored louder, more aggressive rock over pop. Those distinctions, which never meant anything to Paul, started calcifying in the music press at that time, leading to our current tribal splits between rock, punk, metal, pop, hiphop, jazz, and so on. Of course Paul did do political songs, and again was ridiculed for it. McCartney could never win, back then. This documentary does a good job of indicating this process.
My favourite Beatle. Also, I blame Ram-era McCartney for me growing a beard. Pathetic high point of my life was when a kid said I looked like Paul McCartney. Totally worth it. Much love to Paul.
I'd like to begin by saying this is a most outstanding doco, probably the best I have seen on McCartney done with flair, care, expertise and with such a touch of magic that by making it so very special it easily transcends the usual formulaic durge we've been given over the years about The Beatles and their solo careers. I sincerely hope that MPL gets wind of this and realises what a genius they could add to their stable or at least get involved with future McCartney projects. This also will mean such a great deal to the true fans who transcended from The Beatles to the Solo Beatles including myself. Ironic that as Paul was slipping into depression in the autumn of 69 while we were all bathing in the wonderment of Abbey Road.... Without question though imo 70/71 was Pauls finest, the quartet of McCartney/Ram/ Wild Life still retain such a magical aura all of their own. I loved BOTR & Venus & Mars, they and the first 3 albums Mc, Ram & Wildlife I return to again and again. For anyone's interest Little Lamb Dragonfly on the Red Rose Speedway album was actually recorded in the Ram sessions, and when you learn that fact you realise that it really does belong on Ram. The essential inclusion (and often overlooked) thoughts, feelings and observations of DennyS, Denny L & Henry are so vital to the first Wings lineup and very moving too. Their own words reflect how much respect they had for Paul, and really it shows how sadly too they were let down financially leaving Denny S and Henry no alternative but to leave. Had Paul perhaps paid the same attention to their payments of salaries that he did to his music they would have never walked out. Linda sadly got a lot of stick at the time but her blended vocal harmonies with Denny were pure magic and a musical legacy to be rightly proud of. Look forward to the rest of the series, I'm pretty sure I won't be disappointed 😎👍
The finest Paul McCartney documentary ever made. I kid you not. A staggeringly good piece of work. Jaw dropping. Thanks a million times for posting it!
I have just watched this part. God, I'm so in love with his mind. His mind is an 8th miracle of the world. I wish that man who spoke about Paul's songs being outrageous in terms of structure would elaborate on that!.. I'm no musicians so I can't know this, but I hear it a lot that the structure of Paul's songs are complex and revolutionary. But no one explains in what way Thank you SO MUCH for doing this. I never will be able to thank you enough for taking your time to do this
One of my favorite elements about this series is how much input there is from people who actually got the chance to work and collaborate with McCartney. Having that kind of "outside" perspective is especially useful when one's main subject is not very much given to self-examination. And it's amazing to see how much love and respect Paul creates around him, more clearly observed in the people whose feelings didn't get distorted by hurt, envy, and bitterness. I hadn't heard Denny Seiwell's accounts before, but I'm glad this series brought them to my attention! His mature attitude and emotional intelligence are noteworthy. 11:40 I liked to hear his take on "Rode All Night"; I came to similar interpretations when I first heard the song.
This is incredible, Imagine what you could make if you had the same budget and access as a big time Hollywood production company, this is hands down the best and most thorough and most in context document of McCartneys post beatles life Appreciate all the hard work you put in buddy!
RAM is a MASTERPIECE ...and John Lennon was a sulky little boy who didn't even realise he was being manipulated by Ono. Great work, I will be binge watching all of these.
I’m so glad I stumbled across this... my favorite band is the Beatles, but my favorite musician/singer/songwriter/artist is absolutely Paul McCartney. And really, no one else (except maybe Lennon and Harrison) really even come close. He IS a genius, absolutely... the greatest artist of the 20th century, hands down. His musical catalogue, both with the Beatles and Wings and as a solo artist, is nothing short of epic. I have no doubt that he will go down in history as one of the greatest songwriters and musicians to ever live. Thank you for the music, Paul. And what a great blessing that he is still with us and still making music! I saw him live in concert in June 2019, and it was the best show I’ve ever seen. Just a brilliant artist and an amazing man.
We’ve needed a good quality Paul McCartney doc for ages, this is amazing quality and I can’t wait to finish these. I hope your work on these leads to great things as it’s deserved
mad respect for the creator of this! Mccartney is the best and about time there's a doc on him. This is also fantastic given that the other Beatles movie is getting pushed back a year.
The Hendrix/Miles/Williams/McCartney album would have been utterly insane, beyond comprehensible..... Imagine Jimi (entering Band of Gypsys), Miles (about to make Bitches Brew), Tony Williams (doing his Lifetime) and McCartney (about to make his solo album) in the same studio.... man, man, oh man!
Amen. Without doubt the greatest 'what-could've-beens' in musical history. I wonder who was responsible for that 'Paul's out of office at the moment' message? Morons!
@@breathless345 Interesting. What was his relationship with McCartney at the time? Or was he a member of the Lennon faction? I know he was name-checked in The Ballad of John and Yoko...
@@I_Am_The_Paulrus He was (and is) a John guy. He wrote a trashy book in 1983 that all 3 Beatles despised. I could go on but I'll just say: He is quite a piece of work. See comments by viewer Yazid Manou on this page! He tells his story of interacting with Brown (regarding the Hendrix Telegram story).
@@breathless345 Thanks for that breathless. I knew of him obviously but not much about his role in the Beatles. It's still fascinating to me how the legacy of the band is still being fought over. Growing up I was always a Lennon guy, mostly because I was your stereotypical anti-establishment teen who bought into the received narrative. However, as I got older and read more about them, I've completely gone over to Paul's team. I still love John, flaws and all, but it really angers me how's there's been a conscious campaign to belittle Paul's character, achievements and talent - something I'm convinced if John were alive today, older and wiser, he'd disapprove of himself. That's why I appreciate your docs so much, something has to be done to redress the balance!
"I love Linda, Henry. She was in the band before you! And she's staying." Wow. Paul isn't only one of the greatest musicians ever to be alive, but a beautiful and real being. Just love how great they were together!
This struck a nerve on me. Whenever it was George Martin talking about Yesterday coming into a dream, the resonating confirmation of Ringo Starr calling Paul McCartney a genius. But I know where the tears starts rolling down. Mull of Kintyre is a beautiful song which structure has been of nothing I've seen equalized. This is the loveliest much beautiful letter to Paul's career as I've ever seen. Nothing gets me more emotional than your videos giving context to all of McCartney's songs, absolute masterpiece!
The first 18 minutes and I'm already BLOWN AWAY!! This is unravelling key points of Paul McCartney HISTORY ... why things happened, the context, with unearthed interviews, and connecting events. BREATHLESS YOU ARE BRILLIANT, AS USUAL!!!!!!!!!!!
It's hard to believe that people didn't like Ram. I wasn't alive at the time of release but hearing it for the first time several years ago, it's one of Paul's best albums imo.
i think it was more like a friend than a mother, she was a solid team mate , they could do everything together cuz they were friends with a lot in common so they did
@@bubbleheart500 you’re absolutely right my dear! The basis of any successful marriage is friendship, support, and understanding and they had that in spades.
These videos are just fantastic. Having watched all the Understanding John and Paul ones, I’m now onto the Macca docs. There can’t be much I haven’t seen or read on the Beatles, yet these spring up surprises all the time. Massive kudos to the creator. Expertly and lovingly done, an absolute joy to watch and something to look forward to each evening. Thank you
The simplicity of the ukulele at the beginning of Ram On and then the vocals always brings a tear or two. And then there are all the other great Mac tunes.
Watching Get Back has me on a deep dive into all things Paul. This doc is a work of art, its probably the best ive seen about him ever and this is only ep 1. Thanks for this and look forward to watching the rest
Henry has been in the audience of a McCartney show a few years ago. Paul made a short "speech" and gave him credits for the wonderful guitar solo in "My Love" and then played that song.A very grateful and warm gesture I think Rusty plays this solo when they play it live.
Sir/Madam, from one Macca diehard to another, you've made my day, week, month with this documentary--thank you! Even though I've only finished this first part and am about to start the next, I would gladly recommend it to not only Beatles fans, but anyone who is interested in getting a fair and accurate portrayal of the history of Sir Paul McCartney. I just can't say enough good things about it--it is, as another commenter wrote below, ludicrously high quality content.
Well, what an unexpected treat: another major docu-series from breathless345. I’d very much enjoyed ‘Understanding Lennon and McCartney’, so I was delighted to find this one too. And I wasn’t disappointed. I binged my way through all five episodes in one sitting, and thought it time well spent. It’s clear that these programmes are a labour of real love. Very well put together and edited, no intrusive commentary or biased agenda. For the most part the artists and the music are allowed to do the talking. And there’s so much music! I’m amazed that the rights people aren’t jumping all over it. It would be nice to think that ‘someone’ recognises the genuine intent behind this effort and has decided to let it pass. We can but hope. So once again a big hurrah for breathless345. I look forward to whatever comes next.
‘Ram’ was a sheer, unadulterated act of musical genius and my favorite McCartney offering ever and, yes, that includes the Beatles. So incredibly innovative and mind-meltingly unconventional and outside the box. Genius.
I have watched many documentaries about Paul and the Beatles. It's hard to get new tidbits of information from most of them but this series is so different. So many new things, perspectives and so many deep cuts I'm just blown away. Thank you.
To find all of these clips from McCartney's personal and professional history, the commentary and overdubs, the enitre presentation...is truly amazing. The Beatles and McCartney have been a part of my life since "I Wanna Hold Your Hand." My first grade "sweetie" walked with me to her house to hear that song for the first time on her mother's portable record player. I was 5, and I've been listening ever since. Thank you for such a, really, magnificent piece(s) of work.
Just realized this was posted the day before Paul's birthday... That TIMING... Your work is a Beatle maniac's dream, it is giving us something to soak up! THANK YOU!
Bravo, stunning. Another amazing Documentary, thanks. I have been a Beatles and Lennon nut for 36 yrs, but recently i have come to really appreciate Paul and how we should cherish him and remember we lived in the same times as McCartney.
"McCartney" is one of the greatest albums of all time. I wish he'd do more that way. The clarity and intimacy of the sound is incredible....Half the tracks would have appeared on whatever Beatles album followed Abbey Road.
I know Linda gets a lot of heat for her vocals, but man, she and Denny doing backup vocals is such a sweet sound. Even non/post-Wings, hearing her voice in the background gives me joy (Great Day, anyone?)
I could never understand how John Lennon could be lauded as this man of Peace and Love yet on his most admired album was an example of John at his most hateful and nastiest. It has always seemed hypocritical of him but i now understand that the music press at the time were playing favourites with ex Beatles and Paul copped a huge backlash for being the one seen to break up the Beatles. I can see now that a lot of people were upset about that and blamed Paul directly for it
John said that both “imagine” and “how do you sleep” were both just music. He didn’t want Imagine to be more than that. It’s the people that thinks the way you said. He was no hypocrite.
Did.el diablo no John was on the way to a breakdown? Me uncle and John hung out me Aunty's. Was born. In London he knew. I was singing Beatles song s. At ten my Jonny gave me a Dan electro it frekin fell facedown off stand broke at neck a u Sha Pe
I never gave any thought that Linda had a new born baby, Heather was still a young child and Paul was going through his feelings about the Beatles breaking up. She definitely had her hands full. And stuck in that farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. I had forgotten about the kids. Not enough has been said giving her credit for handling it like a champ.
AH!!! To wake up -- to THIS!!! What a gift!!! On Paul's birthday no less!! I watched all the parts of your Understanding John & Paul series, and thought, well, this was phenomenal! The Beatles music, particularly Paul's, has always been my soul's antidepressant throughout life. It calms me, makes me smile, and reminds me there is always hope and happiness - no matter what.
Don't usually leave comments on things, but the fact you did this out of your own time just to document the career of one of the greatest musicians in the history of the world is really beautiful and impressive stuff. Cheers to you lad.
What gets me about Paul McCartney is that he can pick a style of music and make something good out of it, like "Martha My Dear," or "Yellow Submarine," or "Eleanor Rigby," and contrasting these to "Helter Skelter," "Paperback Writer," and "Get Back." I just hope that he later acquired an appreciation for Classical Music.
I'm in tears... Sad day.. Devastated made Paul more strong.. Stronger and firm.. Losing love person in his life but at last he is what he is today... ❤✊ I had no idea Paul was so mistreated by the industry. Makes his sucess even sweeter! RAM has ALWAYS been amongst my favorite albums of all time.
It was John getting even with him, Jann Wenner/Rolling Stone REALLY leading the way on attack, and Paul's "family man" direction at the time.
Well done, Brian. So glad you met and spoke with him. I know how that feels and it does last a lifetime.
This whole series should be officially endorsed by McCartney himself and promoted on his own channel.
I love it. (And then the possible double meanings of rolling a joint to share, or rolling one’s hips toward a sexual partner, and “loving in the palm of my hand” suggesting both the vulnerability of someone placing power over their heart in someone else’s hands and also just suggesting a physical act-I just think it’s got this really intriguing mixed vibe of intimate, playful, and plaintive.) I guess I like that a lot of Paul’s lyrics invite “close readings.”
But I think I relate to a lot of his themes: nostalgia, regret, emotional disconnect from reality or difficulty communicating feeling, wanting things to be made whole, loneliness, empathy for others.
@@stephantom8237 Brilliant comment!!

But again to each his own and whatever makes you happy my friend, no reason why we can’t enjoy both right?
This is phenomenal. This is my Paul - not the one that the general public think they know.

I feel the same way. Great comment indeed.
I totally agree with you. Spot on!
And in 2022 stadiums were and are packed to hear Paul. I was there and will never ever ever forget it as long as I live.
Saw/heard him at Fenway in Bahstin in June, 022. GREAT show.

His first two solo albums were savaged by the critics. Years later critics hailed them as "low-fi" and "indie" classics. This is what I already knew as a 14 year old when they came out. Music critics are the most useless form of life. Rolling Stone has been a joke for decades.
I Don’t like the first McCartney album, but Ram is a masterpiece!
Just take a look at Rolling Stone's top 100s - songwriters, guitarists etc. - risible. Music critics and journalists parade their likes and dislikes as objective critique.
Ram is so good!
Paul's first two solo LP's remain my favourites of his post-Beatles work. He is such a music man. It just pours out of him.
Ray Stroud if you haven’t seen their newest top 100 list, I envy you
Funny, maybe the critics hated it, but I vehemently remember that everyone I knew played Ram on their Magnovox record player a million times that summer.
Their loss.
Love McCartney and RAM❤️
Michael MacD.....forget Macca.....we love your 'What a fool believes' ' Minute by Minute' 'I keep Forgettin'. 🤣😂

Wow! What a journey. What a life. What a gift. This is a phenomenal document. Thank you.
Everyone loved the Beatles for pushing boundaries and making people change how they think. Most people didn't understand Paul's most radical concept: Love and Family.

Wasn't that John's concept with Yoko?

Revisiting your documentary now that I'm reading the Kozinn/Sinclair 'McCartney Legacy '..Thankyou...they fit together perfectly.
4:44 I love how Lennon states he's learned a lot of work ethic, determination, and perseverance from McCartney, and how this brilliantly segues into the episode's title by essentially presenting its thesis: to carry on through hardship so you might break free and rise out of the ashes on the other side.
1985 is such a good song.

If it wasn’t for Paul the Beatles would have lost a big part of their fortune, because he was smart enough to see that Allen Klein was a crook. Paul fought In court to keep the Beatles fortune and won.

He's a person filled with good feelings and good vibes, positivity, joy... and all that while being a musical genius and while having to get a lot of shit he didn't deserve. He's a legend but he is a good person above all, the biggest and rarest quality someone can have.

Many jealous GUYZZZ are out there, SPEECHLESS .
those reviews were criminally savage. jesus wtf?
Without question though imo 70/71 was Pauls finest, the quartet of McCartney/Ram/ Wild Life
still retain such a magical aura all of their own.
Linda sadly got a lot of stick at the time but her blended vocal harmonies with Denny
were pure magic and a musical legacy to be rightly proud of.
Look forward to the rest of the series, I'm pretty sure I won't be disappointed 😎👍
Paul still can write a ditty! He is a musical genius!

Especially to counteract the widespread acceptance of the narrative that he is controlling and difficult to work with!

Lovely described, yabba. It’s really professionally composed! Congratulations to the talented guy.
This documentary series is incredible. I don't even know what else to say. What a great, great series.
Amazing work. I admire and respect your passion and dedication. Thank you very much. Greetings from Chile.
"McCartney" is one of the greatest albums of all time. I wish he'd do more that way. The clarity and intimacy of the sound is incredible....Half the tracks would have appeared on whatever Beatles album followed Abbey Road.
Maybe not the greatest there are a few "great" tracks, some decent and some album filers. It was a solid debue leading to RAM
I know Linda gets a lot of heat for her vocals, but man, she and Denny doing backup vocals is such a sweet sound. Even non/post-Wings, hearing her voice in the background gives me joy (Great Day, anyone?)
Eff Jan Wenner! Paul gets the last, best laugh. Rolling Stone magazine: "Sheer banality!"
Mark Ukeley
What a sweet revenge ☺️
Putting Paul down BUT he remain STANDING UP TO NOW @ 78. Ha Ha !
Sheer banality? That's a solid description of Rolling Stone itself.
I can see now that a lot of people were upset about that and blamed Paul directly for it
Paul carried the Beatles for two years after John faded into drugs and Ono
@Wes 76 he never abused julian you fucking bullshitter, fuck off with you bullshit
seth hamby don’t make me laugh. “CARRY”? John made some of his best music in the last two years of the Beatles.
At ten my Jonny gave me a Dan electro it frekin fell facedown off stand broke at neck a u Sha

This is incredible. Thank you .made me cry with sadness joy and pride in my Beatle.
AH!!! To wake up -- to THIS!!! What a gift!!! On Paul's birthday no less!! I watched all the parts of your Understanding John & Paul series, and thought, well, this was phenomenal! But, I guess that's it! ... And then THIS!!! :D Thank you so much!! Something good to get lost in!! You're the greatest! You've reimagined the documentary!!! I adore these!
Fascinating detail about Jimi Hendrix wanting Paul to be in a band with him and Miles Davis
Can’t imagine what that combination would sound like. Too bad it didn’t happen
I feel like it is Christmas morning. Your gift is exactly what the world needs right now. Thank you so much for your work on these films. The Beatles music, particularly Paul's, has always been my soul's antidepressant throughout life. It calms me, makes me smile, and reminds me there is always hope and happiness - no matter what.
You are INCREDIBLE. Your beautiful documentaries are BLESSINGS to us all. Blessed be and PEACE AND LOVE to you, beautiful soul!!!
Thanks for doing this. I've read books on Paul McCartney, but this is much more satisfying.
Don't usually leave comments on things, but the fact you did this out of your own time just to document the career of one of the greatest musicians in the history of the world is really beautiful and impressive stuff. Cheers to you lad.
One of the greatest man alive! Very touching documentary...
Great, great job!!! 🙏❤️
Paul McCartney wrote a symphony so it's safe to say he did.
Sir Paul McCartney's music is the Classical Music of our age. Time is showing this ....
@@egverlander I'd add Jeff Lynne and Freddy Mercury (and others) too.
Paul's vocals in 1969, '70 and '71 were the best I've ever heard. He deservedly won a Grammy for the "Let It Be" single.
I just want to say every thing you post is impressive. These are incredible. Going to be watching these as I find time.
I'm in tears... Sad day.. Devastated made Paul more strong.. Stronger and firm.. Losing love person in his life but at last he is what he is today... Lord has there with him while struggle for better air.. Bless Paul.. You are survivor and still on your own track.. People still adore The Beatles because you are still here... and a help from Ringo too😍😍🙏
Critics are parasites. Also, amused by the, 'there are boys who'd cut their fingers off to play with Paul McCartney', line.
