Excerpt from Pique magazine: Much of the film is carried by 15-year-old Jett Klyne, of Penticton, B.C. He says Smart’s story resonated with him because his great-grandmother is a Holocaust survivor. “It was really important to me because it's been a part of my family and I know that even a lot of kids today have no idea what the Holocaust is," says Klyne, who appeared in Disney Plus’ Marvel series “WandaVision.” Smart recalls a moment on set when Klyne ran into his arms in tears after filming an especially sorrowful scene with Toronto's David Kohlsmith, who plays Yanek. “He cried and I cried with him,” Smart says. “This little young boy did not act as Max, he lived and became Max himself. I could not stop him from crying for half an hour. All the performers and all the crew cried together.” Klyne says he cried so much while filming the scene that it no longer felt like he was acting, and that he gained a deeper emotional understanding of the horrors of the Holocaust.
If you think of all those who have suffered and died, cruelly, violently, regardless of faith, ethnicity, country of origin... over the centuries. One thing is common - men, the cruelest of men are the perpetrators. It must change or humankind will not see the next century.
The BBC released a 2 part interview with Maxwell Smart, the boy in the woods, who is 93 years old (in 2024). Check the podcast "Lives less Ordinary" under the name "The boy who hid in the woods from the Nazis". It is truly remarkable to hear him speak and tell the story himself.

The Canadian actor, Saul Rubinek’s parents also had a very heart wrenching and harrowing story of survival during the war. If they had died, Saul would never have existed. His parents gave a first hand account of their ordeal and of the Polish family that saved them in 1995 at the 50th anniversary of the end of the war.

For accuracy: "Smart knew he would be shot if he ran, so he removed his Star of David armband and walked away until he reached a bridge, where he saw a German officer walking towards him." (Guardian 0f 28/05/2024) Also: Totally cliche dramaturgy not realising how much stronger it would turn out to only film it as if it were the arrest a bureaucratic act.
I find very interesting that the synopsis only says «Nazi persecution in Eastern Europe». Let's be clear and honest. That story takes place in Buczacz, Ukraine. Is the Canadian production team too shy to tell things like it is : Ukrainians helped Nazis exterminate Jews. They even had the very infamous Galicia Brigade - 14th division of the Waffen SS that was extremely effective at that, to the point the high ranking SS were very impressed... Canadian senators and prime minister Justin Trudeau even applauded such Ukrainian Nazi last year in the Canadian parliament...

“some tragic event”? The Holocaust was a systematic eradication of 6 million Jews; another 6 million souls were also murdered by Nazis for political beliefs; sexual orientation; physical impairment; Gypsies. The largest number of those gassed and cremated were Jews, though. The factory precision of the death camps is still shocking. The Holocaust is vastly different from this unending war being waged by Benjamin Netanyahu. The war in Gaza is pure chaos, unacceptable, fueled by both the Hamas leaders and Netanyahu. The people of Gaza are the victims of their own leadership and Israeli government. Netanyahu is bordering on insanity in his refusal of a ceasefire. Hamas wants to drive Israel into the sea and kill all Jews. Between them, a humanitarian disaster exists in Gaza, and it must stop. Speaking as a Jew now, Netanyahu is destroying Israel by himself, he is a criminal, and needs to be tried before the World Court. He does not represent anything Israel stands for and he breaks my heart. To dismiss the Holocaust as something no longer relevant is the kind of arrogance that comes from not studying history. The tragedy in Gaza is real, but cannot be compared to the Holocaust neither in scale, nor intent. What is happening in Gaza is a humanitarian catastrophe but it isn’t genocide. An attempt to dismiss “some tragic event” that happened 80 years ago serves to discredit and diminish the current war. And where is your outrage over other, similar, tragedies throughout the globe? What about Manipur, India? What about Armenia’s plans to invade Azerbaijan? Ongoing issues in the Democratic Republic of Congo? What about Darfur in Sudan? Boko Haram is still active in Nigeria. What about China’s suppression of the Uyghurs? Or are you only concerned about Gaza because it’s a Jewish state waging war?
