    At the end of the video, I share 3 tips that I would suggest keeping in mind if you're looking to get your Private Pilot License Training. These tips are my opinion and I only share to try and help you in your journey. If you're looking to become an Ag Pilot, this is the first step you would want to complete.

    I just discovered your channel and have really enjoyed it. I grew up watching Stearmans spraying our fields and B52’s and KC135’s from GFAFB. It inspired me to pursue my dreams of being a pilot. I was lucky to fly a lot of cool airplanes in the Air Force and NDANG. I recently retired from Delta after a 31 year career. I thought you gave some great career advice to any aspiring pilots. Keep up the great videos. “Fly low, fly fast”, we used to say that in the A10.

    I did my ppl training in the evenings and weekends. During the day I held down a job so I never ran out of money. Doing my commercials right now the same way, works out pretty good since up here in Manitoba the sun goes down at 9,30 so there's still plenty of daylight after work for flying

    For a private pilot certificate there is perhaps not much difference between an individual CFI/FBO and a Flight school (not a college) but when you get to the commercial/instrument a Part 141 Flight School can get you a commercial certificate with an instrument rating in 200 hours. In addition to a Commercial/instrument you should get a CFI, the most common way to build time. Working for an air taxi part 135 or airline part 121 will eventually require an ATP certificate. That will require 1500!hours with 500 of those being cross country. Hint: to build time buy a cheap slow airplane. Time counts, distance doesn’t. To build cross country time always land at another airport. After the qualifications for a private pilot, cross country is any flight where you land at another airport. Disclaimer: verify all of this with the current regulations. My memory of this is 30 years old.

    East coast CFI here. Good tips! Over here I tell people to plan between 8 and 12k. Currently instructing in a 172 so probably more the 8 to 10k range. Before I was in a Diamond DA40 and that was more 10 to 12k range. All depends on how prepared my student is for the lesson on how much ground time they get billed.

    Got my private in 97. Took me 58 hours in a C152 U. I got lucky and found a CFI with their own plane and my cost was $45/hr for the plane and $25/hr for the CFI. Now 23 years later the last I flew was in a C172 R @$125/hr and the ownerCFI was $50/hr which was fairly cheap. That was rural Tennessee. I checked prices un Colorado Springs a few year ago and both plane and instructor was over $200/hr for a 172! I had to quit flying after I got hit with divorce and child support in 2005. At that time I was in a flying club in Denver at Centennial Airport and paying $150/hr for a C 182 TR. I might get back into it soon. Last plane I was renting got totaled a year ago.

    Love your channel! Curious question, is there a danger of breathing the chemicals you spray while in the cockpit?

    • @AgAviationAdventures
      @AgAviationAdventures  3 роки тому +3

      I think that is a concern. I’m in an enclosed cockpit and most of the time I am able to avoid that. However if I run a cleanup pass right after my last pass I can sometimes smell it. Every now and then I think it’s okay but I wouldn’t want to be inhaling it all day. Kind of like vehicle exhaust, I wouldn’t want to breath that in all day but smelling it once in awhile is not going to make you sick.

    This is how I "got in." After the Air Force for 4 years, I used my GI bill (1980) to go through flight school and earned all my ratings. After a year and a half full time I was hired by a small FBO as a CFI and part time 135 single engine charter pilot which soon grew to multi engine. 12 years later the owners wanted to move on to bigger and better things which they did. I bought the FBO from them and expanded it into an air ambulance operation. Did that very well for another 12 years until a divorce ended my successful operation. And after 20k hours TT, that's pretty hard to take. So my friends, take note, KEEP your eyes in the sky, and keep them there.

    I'm just about to get my PPL. I'm a few flights away. Then I will get my tail wheel endorsement and then buy something like a Cessna 140 or 170. Can I simply get the rest of my 250 hours without an instructor? That would be my 100 hours of PIC, 50 hours of cross country, etc. And then wouldn't I only need to fly like 10 hours-ish with an instructor to get a commercial license? Of course I'll have another check ride and exam. It's just that sometimes people make it out to be that I have to be working with an instructor the whole time? Thanks!

    • @AgAviationAdventures

      Thanks for watching Jeff. I believe part 61.129 covers this but my understanding is you need 20 hours of training and the rest can be on your own. I would double check with a CFI or someone who is more in the “know” then me but it sounds like a great plan.

      I'd also suggest identifying your:
      1) highest priorities
      2) available funding options (work, grants and scholarships [e.g. EAA], living at home or with other family)
      3) plan to get there
      Then work the plan!

    I'm currently a CFI in Georgia and I'm looking to transition into ag aviation. I only have an hour of tail wheel time. Can you still get hired with a company and have them train you and endorse you, or should you come in with a certain amount of tail wheel hours and endorsement? Also, I have heard that you will need to do some schooling for agriculture to be allowed to drop pesticides and herbicides, is it better to come in with that or get it once you get a job with a company?

    • @AgAviationAdventures
      @AgAviationAdventures  3 роки тому +2

      You should go into it with some TW time. I think I had around 200 hours maybe. I didn’t have any knowledge of agriculture when I was given my first opportunity to spray. Take a look at the video “do you want to be an Ag pilot” where I mention some pointers.

      From a Georgia Ag pilot, get some tail wheel time. Insurance companies are going to have some requirements for hours in a tailwheel aircraft. Find a J 3 cub or super cub if you can. Also, you need a pesticide applicators license from the Georgia Dept of Agriculture. There are three tests you’ll have to pass. Textbooks are available through the University of Georgia. Good luck.
