God bless Paul Simon. April14 2024.
The man is a human treasure. Thank you, Stephen Colbert, for giving him all this time and space and respect here.
@@MarkRosasco-fi9tj We all need courtesy and respect.
Calm down snowflake.@@MarkRosasco-fi9tj
@@MarkRosasco-fi9tj You do realise that Mr Simon was availing himself of Colbert's mainstream television audience to promote his new album, don't you?
@@MarkRosasco-fi9tj Colbert was hosting Paul Simon on Colbert’s show and Colbert was graciously and generously hosting Paul Simon in a special format that honored and respected Paul Simon as the supreme artist that he is. The choice to have Paul Simon as a guest on Colbert’s show and to honor him in this way was Colbert’s choice and it was not a right to which Paul Simon’s artistry or legend entitles him.
As for who needs who, we all need each other. In this case, we need to hear the wisdom and artistry of Paul Simon; Paul Simon needs us, his audience, to hear and appreciate the beauty of his talent; and both Paul Simon and we, the audience, need Colbert to make this platform available for such sublime artistry to be expressed and appreciated. There is no “need” among these three aspects that is superior to the other, as the beautiful experience that was witnessed in this video would not have existed without any one of the three aspects missing. Like three legs on a stool, we all need each other for the stool to be strong and provide support.
Don’t mind Mark. He has a disorder
No special effects, no auto tune, no backing vocals, no click track to keep time…. A guy in his 80’s who can mesmerize a crowd with his voice and a guitar.
Exactly that!
Nearly 83 years old.... What a legend...
Wish you great health and longevity. Thank you for your music.
Wow I didn’t realize Paul Simon was so deep. I have new respect for him. And I appreciate him sharing his experience about his hearing loss which is a journey I’m on as well.
He has always been.
(where have you been the last 60 years¡?)
WOW that was so profound it brought tears to my eyes. Paul Simon is a master in our times
Genius. The Rembrandt of music. The Picasso of poetry.
He presents us with nectar of the fruit of our life... in a drop of water.
I feel so lucky to have had his songs to listen to in the many stages of my life.
Man, Paul Simon created a mood there. That was true intimacy. No backing tracks, band, pitch correction. Not every musical guest on Colbert could do that. You are alone, voice, guitar and your words.. That's why it's so powerful. it's real. More couch performances please!
And kudos to Stephen's crew for just focusing on Paul. There were no annoying cutaways, or pans to the audience. It was simply a joy to sit and listen. Stephen is a class act at just letting the music work the room.
took me to a sacred place... the solemnity, the lost memory of his pop history, the earnest performance. Shivering, as if I just heard a large choir...
Yes
Literally shivering indeed...love him ❤️
Paul is love.
I love it when somebody can play instrument, sing , and tell a story that make you listen.
Paul is one of the greatest guitar storyteller. ✌🏽👍🏽
Top 3 lyricist ever 🥰
With one instrument, one voice, he owned all the feeling in the room
Check out Ren.
Don’t forget troubadour Gordon Lightfoot!
I am simply blown away with how humble, creative, and insightful Paul Simon is, and it all seems to come together in this one song.
I am without words. He is a gift. Thank you for this segment on Colbert. How deep, it touched my soul.
There’s nothing like a masterful artistic musician in their later years. All of that life experience shapes the music and the performance. It’s something so raw and wise and beautiful.
The oldest singers have the most honest voices
Comparable to Leonard Cohen in his progression from "Suzanne" and "So Long, Marianne" to "Hallelujah" and "Dance Me to the End of Love".
Not only one of the best songwriters, but one of the best guitarists.
The dude hasn't slowed a bit. Just him and his guitar.
This is incredible musicianship...look at him go. That was fantastic. None better...
A beautiful sense & humor & calming all at once!
Paul you are the greatest songwriter to ever grace the planet. Thank you for being a part of my life with your talent. God bless
Thank you, Paul Simon and Stephen Colbert. Listening was joy.
Much Joy & soul - I’m tearing 😢up damn it!❤❤❤ now I just want to hear ALL my Paul S songs music 🎵 Have. Peacefully lovely 💗
I have been a fan of Paul Simon for many years. I really appreciated this opportunity to see him on your show.
“All of life’s abundance in a drop of condensation.” indeed. This conversation must be archived, available to future generations. Priceless. 🌞🤸🏾♂️🫶🏻
"All of life's abundance in a drop of condensation." That makes me cry in awe and joy. It reminds me of Gerard Manley Hopkins, "There lives the dearest freshness deep down things." The whole world, ever fresh and ever new, deep down in a drop of condensation. I have no words.
One of my favorite poets and one of my favorite musicians. ❤
Fascinating that you mention Gerard Manley Hopkins, because I was just thinking, when Colbert mentioned the "59th Street Bridge Song," that the line "dappled & drowsy & ready to sleep" sounds like Hopkins.
Ironic that in invoking the lyricism of Hopkins and Simon, you’d end with “I have no words.”
It's startling but amazing to find others here.
I am reminded of Blake's "To see the world in a grain of sand", an idea (the universal in the particular) that seems to recur in many spiritual/ transcendental settings.
Paul Simon's voice has been a part of the sound track on my life - S&G had a place in the record rack in my dad's stereo; some of the first music I ever heard. I have continued to listen. 50 years later and I am still listening and am struck by his ability to distill music and words to the point of poetry and magic...to the essence of something ineffable....but so necessary: water, friendship, home
Spellbinding. A beautiful song. Or Psalm. Bravo Mr Simon. 👏
Paul Simon is a legend one of my musical heroes
Thanks Stephen Colbert
Gawd. I didn't breathe for five minutes and 25 seconds. Breathtaking.
Just sublime and beautiful guitar work Paul.
Stunning, everything, lyrics, strumming, picking, flamenco, just astounding.
Have loved him for decades!
Love, love, love Paul Simon!! Thks so much for giving him the spotlight. The guitar was fabulous, heartfelt lyrics😊.

So much respect for Paul Simon. I had been wondering lately why there weren't enough songs about being much older. I feel better now.
That was a beautiful and brilliant song.
Love, love, love, thank you, tears of times, love, love, love
Hauntingly beautiful stillness in a drop of infinite weight. Didn't know TV still did things like this. Thank you .
A magnificent comment this is!
I just thought I'm young sitting here watching these old guys play this legendary music, just like they watched the old blues artists when they were around
"Can you imagine us, years from today: sharing a park bench, quietly? How terribly strange to be seventeen ..."
Yes wonderful 😊
"Two billion heartbeats and out, or does it all begin again..." Sublime lyrics from one of the greatest poets of our time
Music is forever; music should grow and mature with you, following you right on up until you die... Great number Al! 👑🙏
A timeless songwriter, a wonderful soul.
Thank you again, Paul, for resounding our spirit. You arose, merry, parsing as a sage of thyme.
This song made me stop what I was doing and listened. Thanks, Paul.
Pual takes my soul for a ride every time I hear him. Thanks Stephen!
What a beautiful gift
Thank you Paul Simon, for this and all the years of your talent. Grateful forever fan.👏💌
Consistently brilliant for 60 years.
His music is a gift to the world more precious than gold.
Paul Simon elevated the art form with each and every album he produced. I am so amazed at the sharpness of his mind at this age. What a treasure! Brilliant song!
Heavenly.
"Dip your hand in heaven's waters God's imagination All of life's abundance In a drop of condensation" 1:32

Paul Simon is, IMO, America’s _GREATEST_ songwriter ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Sound of Silence, Bridge Over Troubled Water, The Boxer, An American Tune, Still Crazy, Me and Julio, Graceland, Diamonds on the Sole of Her Shoes, Slip Sliding Away, Mrs Robinson, So Long Frank Lloyd Wright . . . => add your favorite below =>
You named many, but I remember "flying my bike passed the gates of the factory" in My Little Town.
Kodachrome, Duncan, The Boxer… his voice has a resonance that is truly special. Paul’s music was an important part of my teenage years. Thanks…
I Am a Rock
Loves Me Like a Rock.
Allergies, Rene and Georgette Magritte with their dog after the war, Think too much (b), The late great Johnny Ace. All from Hearts and Bones. 🤗
"All of life's abundance in a drop of condensation." Profound and beautiful, not just the song itself but Simon's singing and guitar playing.
I hear you. Someone here called the lyrics a sham. Hopefully they'll reach the point where the line you quoted and "God's imagination" make sense.
Total legend and a great interview! That’s how you talk to a national treasure. Total respect!
Yes - nailed it!
Paul Simon has enriched my life for 60 years.🙏 Thank you, Paul.🙏
Wow. What a mesmerizing performance. 👏👏👏
Really?
I play trombone & recorder in a folk ensemble that includes three guitar players. It's not that easy to play guitar masterfully like Paul does & sing eloquently at the same time. George, Canada...
Omg 😢 😱 I died!❤
Paul’s artistry, his calm nature and this performance made me cry, thank you Paul. I listen to your music whenever I need to feel at peace with the world, I love it, thank you! ✨✨✨
Thank you for your beautiful music ❤!
❤profound in its purview - the echoing heartbeat of the song resounds long after the string stops vibrating. Thank you Paul Simon
Yes, yes they do! Enjoy life every day bc it’s fleeting & goes by so much faster when you’re older!
Oh it’s morning here so go outside & enjoy i! What an amazing 🤩 & talented man❤
Deeply heartfelt.
Greatest American songwriter, ever... thank you for so much.....
Better tan Huey Lewis?
Pure talent, this is as good as anything Paul Simon has done, just heavenly.
Not even close to his best work. Come on, own up.
Yes! Paul Simon, still got that superb talent! Pay attention people, not everyone with some age loses it, most just keep getting better, like Paul!
Him singing it on the couch feels like something from the 70s.
It really does lol! I loved all the 70s talk shows and game shows. Beautiful song and such an intimate performance. Really enjoyed this!
It sounds like a parody, rather.
He’s one of the reasons why the 1970’s were great.
Yeah it's a direct reference to what youre referring to, but you already know that don't you?
i felt the same, the only thing missing was the fire we're all sitting around at the end of the day ~ "dip your hand in Heavens Water" 🎶🎸💜💧🌎
He is simply the best!
Exquisite ❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤
My dad introduced me to album Bridge over trobbled water he said listen 🎶 its poetry in song 🎵 i shall always love ❤ and tressure those memories ... my dad was a great man. i miss him so many thanks, Paul Simon
Mesmerizing and incredible. Thank you Paul Simon and Stephen for sharing.
Totally amazing. I have his "7 Psalms" album, but this brings the song to a whole new level. Thanks, Stephen Colbert, for showcasing Paul!!!
Wow, what a sublime performance.
Paul Simon is a master finger style guitarist, and a genius of composition.
Thanks to Martin Guitars for a wonderful instrument. I have two of them myself, and they are exceptional instruments.
Paul Simon is an oracle.
82, God bless him.
Thanks Stephen.
He has been with us for so long we may take him for granted, which would be a shame. He was so good as a young man, yet through the decades he has continued to produce wonderful music, to continue to grow, to move and delight listeners the world over. "All of life's abundance in a drop of condensation..."--what a line!
Thank you!!!!
To me, this music comes from someplace transformed, otherworldly... a gift. Thanks abound.
I love you, Paul....
Incredible. Paul still has it!!
Still to this day I find and watch the live Central Park concert with Simon and Garfunkel … because … this ( gestures broadly at the man with the beautiful guitar 🎸)💙💜💚
That concert never gets old. I still listen to it to when I get the chance. One of the best things about UA-cam, all the music, interviews and great stuff from the 60-70s when I grew up at our fingertips!
@@cherylalt101Those were cool times!
@@ShiraLaya0312 They sure were Barbara! Simply the best lol! Have a great evening!
And a #RealBeautifulMind ❤❤❤❤
Nominate him for Nobel peace prize already!!!!!!
I'm thinking the Literature Prize would be more fitting.
Well certainly. Like Dylan. But his work in South Africa and bringing the music and collaboration with musicians and bringing it through his Western Pop lens I think is an amazing example of peace. @@PogueMahone1
Medal of Freedom
@@honeycombsound2470 That award has been cheapened into meaninglessness by 45, of course.
@@bobbrush1709 Yep, there is a a strong case there that many of the musicians who played on that album would agree with. They saw night after night on their tour as the world beginning to see their struggle for the first time. The wheels had been turning for many years on the struggle against apartheid, but Graceland shifted it from 2nd gear into 5th in a matter of months.
Brought tears to my eyes bravo
Paul shows that he is still as creative or more than when he was young. Genius is ageless. Thanks Paul and Stephen from Spain.
This is a great album about the great Being
Unlike many of Paul's contemporaries who elicit cringes when performing he is still a delight to listen to. Great guitar playing, voice in pitch with a seasoned vibrato, slight falter at the end, he is still as viable an artist now as he was 50+ years ago. Love Paul Simon. Thank you SC from SC for letting the appearance be about him and not you until he asked you a question. This had better be on your highlight reel when its all over.
Now that’s musicianship !
Hauntingly sublime! Bravo 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
This man has never gotten the credit for his guitar playing skills that he deserves. Whenever you see a list of the top guitar players, it always, always ‘electric’ guitar players. Ask any guitar player and they will tell you that ‘finger picking’ is the hardest type of guitar playing to do. He does it flawlessly.
Gosh that was absolutely beautiful
Deep and oh so sweet…magical, spiritual, eternal. Very grateful. Thank you….✨
I will be signing up for MGM+ solely to watch Paul Simon.
Such a special moment with so much emotion shared and felt. Thanks, Stephen and co.
Even in youth, Simon possessed insights beyond expectation and continues to mature.
Awesome!!👏I could hear Sting in a collaboration w/Paul Simon. That’s so mellow & awe inspiring 👏❤️
I LOVE that idea, this is reminiscent of Sting's style....😊❤.
They had a live tour together some years ago. It was amazing.
i waited all night to see this it always amazes me how many people love him as much as me he is my one and only
He is a master musician and storyteller
A model of Elder strength in art creation…and the opposite too-timeless genius. Essential Simon.
What a lovely asside from this cursed, new fangled era.
Paul presenting us with a moment of living truth.
Rock on, Legend!
I want to write something profound and all I can say is, Wow! Genius. Mr Simon, you have opened my mind as well as my ears- Bless you.
He can still sing, @ 82. :)
Meu ídolo ❤❤❤, assisti seu show em São Paulo, Brasil, em 1991!
Oh how I long for more! Music !!!
Awesome
There are echoes of early S&G lyrically and tone. Love this.
Magical. I feel such reverence listening to this! ❤
I don't know what to say... The song is so good, the mood, his singing, his knowledge of the guitar... He's my favorite artist by far!
Wow! The way he performed that song...the thoughtful repetition of phrases, the hand gestures! He has become a rabbi, and he's giving us a teaching.
I grew up listening to music that taught us lifes lessons in poetry. Love it want more of it
