  • Highlights of a Barnet Sunday League John Motson Junior Challenge Cup First Round match between AC Finchley from Division Three and Edmonton Rovers from Division Five.
Played at the Old Cholmeleians Sports Ground in Mill Hill on Sunday 26th November 2023.
Rovers came into this fixture without Player-Manager Josh Wakeford and Assistant Manager Stuart Dorward, both of whom were away for the weekend, and the last time that happened they lost 4-3 to a team reduced to nine men, while the frantic behaviour of their many 'Wannabee Manager' supporters on the touchline put the players off their game.
With goalkeeper Ritchie Redgrave and several defenders also unavailable, it meant Captain Charlie Savage had to take over as Caretaker Player-Manager for the day, while Kai McAuley (in goal) and 28-year-old attacking midfielder Joe Attipa (as a substitute) were included in a squad of 14 for only the second time so far this season.
AC Finchley had a terrible start to the season in Division Three with one draw, seven defeats and a failure to fulfil a fixture from their first nine matches, but they won their first game of the season last week in beating last season's Division 5 Runners-Up NLR 4-1 and they appear to have had a sort-out with seven of their starting line-up for this match being regulars from when they were in the Premier Division four seasons ago, which is something that hasn't happened at all so far this season. They also have a good new signing on the bench in midfielder Adam Gwynnette and with an average age of 30 for their 14-man squad today, they could prove to be far too experienced for Rovers young side, even though Rovers have won their last four matches and are still fielding a strong attacking line-up for this match.

I think Rovers should take heart from that performance. Kai in goal was excellent (just works on those kicks). However, Fergus was lucky to stay on the pitch after his petulant swipe and he seemed to lose focus after that (he's usually very good). Joe did well, add some strength and guile.

Well played Rovers, really decent performance on a tough surface with both keepers outstanding. Thought Joe was excellent when he came on too.
Also thought the ref was very good, although surprised he didn’t see the Fergus shove as a penalty in the second half!
And yes Rick, you looked old. Looked like you wanted them to bring a rocking chair on at one stage you were sitting down so much 😂

Lolz re: Rick. Poor lad got a kicking though. To be fair, he kept his head where it mattered.

Yes, we had five players unavailable for this match who play in those positions.

Not yet (from the advert on the highlights). Scanning the QR code with a phone to get to the GoFundMe page does work, but I don't think it's up on screen long enough for people to react or read the message.
I might have to put it up at the end of the match instead.
