Honour to have you visit. Watched all your Yukon Video's. Those solo trips you do are epic! I know how much anxiety multiplies when by yourself... impressive!
Nice to see the freighter canoe in use. I lived in Whitehorse in the 70's, used to see a lot of Teslin freighter's around. Keep the videos coming, no better place than the Yukon!
As I re-watched this video I realized that the boat you are using in all the rest of these boating videos must be the Scott Hudson Bay as well. How does this boat hull material do on gravel bars? Have you noticed any damage to the hull material from gravel bars? I have noticed that several folks in the Fairbanks area are using the copperhead 23 horse surface drive on the Scott Hudson Bay. How do you think that combo would work compared to your smaller motor? Pros / cons? Thanks again. Lonnie
***** , Lonnie. The boat holds up very well. The gell coat on the keels takes some damage and I need to do some repair every year but fiberglass is easy to work with. Thinking of adding some Kevlar felt on the highest wear areas but haven't done so yet. The 23 would be the way to go for this boat but I saved a bit of weight and some money. I also hedged my bets as one of these days I'll build a lighter 18 footer that could use the 14. Once the kids are in University I'll need less room and 140 pounds would beat 250! My Old Man strength is decreasing every year!
Looks great. Good to see that you are keeping it's condition up. Looking forward to see the surface drive. Once again, love seeing where you live, thanks for the vids. G'day from down under and safe travels.
People still talk about the Teslin freighters. A local dealer sells quite a few Scott Freighters here and the Albany and HB seem to have quite a market. When I first bought mine few had seen one. Got a lot of great conversations with old timers who liked the design.
Thanks for getting back with me. Great feedback. FYI. When I was in my later 20's I spent three summers up in the Yukon in my 18' double ended lake canoe. I did some rivers and allot of lakes. Now that I'm nearing retirement I'm planning to get back up to the Yukon / NWT and boat all that I can. I looked all over for the HB and about the only one I could find was from "Kanoe People" (Scott) in Whitehorse. He had it shipped down to Edmonton and I picked it up last week. I've bought a 5HP Mercury for lakes and trolling but will need the Copperhead for rivers and hard weather on lakes. (I just got back from my maiden voyage with the HB. 5 days on Yellowstone Lake with my boy and four friends. Six people and all of our gear in the HB. I was very impressed.) I'm sure there are many river trips that are possible and that I am not even aware of, but ... What rivers have you driven up ?? The Big Salmon, Pelly, Stewart, Athabasca, The Peace ??? My whole life I've always paddled down the rivers and then hitchhiked back to the put-in to get my vehicle (sometimes hundreds of miles and days). With the Copperhead it would seem like the easier way to do most rivers would be to motor up the river and then turn around and return downriver to the put-in/vehicle. What's been your experience ??
I have done big rivers like the Teslin, and Liard and little skinny rivers like the Morely. Have also done lots of lake systems connected by little streams and one nice thing about the HB is that it doesn't draft much even with a moose in it. Lots of trips planned but I will need to retire to find the time. 2 years or so. How about you?
I did the Teslin to Yukon to Dawson, and then Frenchman Lake, Aishihik Lake to Sekulmun Lake, and Teslin Lake back in 1982. I just turned 65 but still have two kids in college so I won't fully retire for three or four years, but .... I'm self employed (EE) and I very often have long periods when I don't have an active project. So once I get the HB set up I'll be able to run up to the Yukon when I have these slack periods.

Pretty awesome man. Sounds like a great trip.

Hi North61. I just bought a HB and was looking at the 23HP Copperhead. How was your experiance with the Copperhead ???
I love the copperhead and the 23 is the right one to get. I got a 14 and it isn't quite enough motor.
I love the Copperhead. very good motor. The 23HP is the correct one to get. I got a 14HP and need more power sometimes going up chutes.
Thanks for getting back with me. Great feedback.

you will like the HB or Albany. Good boats!
Very nice. I sold my grumman freighter this year. May move up to an HB or something like it in a year or so.
