Shakespeare in Love is a 1998 period romantic comedy film directed by John Madden, written by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard, and produced by Harvey Weinstein. It stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Joseph Fiennes, Geoffrey Rush, Colin Firth, Ben Affleck and Judi Dench.
The film depicts a fictional love affair involving playwright William Shakespeare (Fiennes) and Viola de Lesseps (Paltrow) while Shakespeare was writing Romeo and Juliet. Several characters are based on historical figures, and many of the characters, lines, and plot devices allude to Shakespeare's plays.
Shakespeare in Love received acclaim from critics and was a box office success, grossing $289 million worldwide and becoming the ninth highest-grossing film of 1998. The film was noted for its highly skilled plotting and balancing of comedy and drama and for the high quality of its dialogue, performances, and production design. It received numerous accolades; it won three Golden Globe Awards (including Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy and Best Actress - Motion Picture Comedy or Musical for Paltrow), two Screen Actors Guild Awards (Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture and Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for Paltrow), and four British Academy Film Awards (including Best Film).[5][6][7] The film ultimately won a leading seven Oscars out of thirteen nominations at the 71st Academy Awards: Best Picture (Parfitt, Gigliotti, Weinstein, Zwick, & Norman), Best Actress (Paltrow), Best Supporting Actress (Dench), Best Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen (Norman & Stoppard), Best Original Musical or Comedy Score (Warbeck), Best Art Direction (Childs & Quertier), and Best Costume Design (Powell).[8]

Imelda Staunton, who plays Viola's nurse, is married to Jim Carter, who plays Juliet's nurse in the play (in this movie). (Also Carson on _Downton Abbey_ and Staunton was in the second movie.)

I always loved that part. That is since I found out about them from Downton Abby. He is awesome as Juliet’s mom.

I once had the very great pleasure of watching this film with an audience full of Hollywood writers who immediately recognized the name “John Webster” as a punchline.

Right? I know 95% of people get their panties bunched over Saving Private Ryan, but this was a well-deserved award for incredibly clever writing. One of the best written movies I've ever seen.

Loved this watchalong with you two! It's always a joy seeing people start to get into this movie as it goes along and it just gets better and is so not what they thought it was going to be about. And without hyperbole, it really is a phenomenal movie, to juggle so much pomp and excess, yet flows so naturally and feels grounded.
And speaking of Downton Abbey, you might want to try out its predecessor by the same writer, 2001's Gosford Park.

I LOVE this charming Academy Award winning movie! So beautiful, romantic, comedic, historical period drama with every clever script and great cast. Definitely in my top films of all time! Described the true nature of love and segued into Shakespeare's 12th Night perfectly where Viola must disguise herself from the King as a boy. John Webster grew up to write and create an early form of a Horror-like genre in theater. Most of the main characters are based on real people! BTW your Scottish accent is almost harder than understanding Shakespearean! LOL!

We missed you too. Sadly Lorna has a very close family member who has suddenly become ill and will pass soon. She has not been able to face the camera often and has been spending her free time caring for them. BUT, we will be getting some more thing out over the coming weeks and hopefully back to full steam ahead as soon as possible

Shakespeare in a Divided America is an excellent history of Shakespeare's plays in America. There's a good chapter on the writing of this movie. The writers really agonized over how to end it and this was the best they came up with

The kid with the mice is John Webster, who grew up to write _The Duchess of Malfi,_ among other works. "Cover her face . . . mine eyes dazzled . . . She died young."

A movie from the 1980s is an old movie in the 2020s; that is objectively the case. I tend to mean movies from the 1930s or 1940s or earlier when I talk about "old movies," but they are all old, really.

Dialogue in this play brilliantly functions as foreshadowing in Greta Gerwig's LITTLE WOMEN.
